Background / History

Er Ming lived in the Star Dou Great Forest alongside Xiao Wu and Da Ming. After sensing Xiao Wu's aura, he seized her from the human party and brought her to a safe location. Xiao Wu scolded him for acting without warning, but he revealed that he had missed her; his stubborn, childlike response quickly softened her anger. 77

His intervention gave Xiao Wu an opportunity to condense her third soul ring without exposing her soul-beast identity. However, her sudden disappearance distracted Tang San during his soul-ring absorption, contributing to the meridian injuries for which Xiao Wu later blamed herself. 77 83 105

Xiao Wu told Er Ming that she had encountered a human with the Titan Giant Ape martial soul. Shocked that a human could bear such a martial soul, Er Ming set out to find this person despite Xiao Wu's warning not to cause trouble. Before leaving, he also agreed to “teach a lesson” to the golden-haired girl Xiao Wu disliked. 77

Er Ming located Yuanen Yehui, whose Titan Giant Ape martial soul gave him an inexplicable sense of bloodline connection. He demanded that Yuanen accompany him, then identified Ye Xinglan as the blond human Xiao Wu had mentioned and attempted to punish her. Ye Xinglan, Yuanen, Meng Yiran, and Chao Tianxiang could not harm him; Er Ming's aura alone overwhelmed the group. 77 78

Chen Xinjie intervened when Er Ming tried to swat Ye Xinglan away. Chen defeated him overwhelmingly, stopped his attempt to flee, prevented him from self-destructing, and transported him back to Shrek Academy for confinement in the Confinement Room. 78 79 80 Lin Feng decided to retain him as a future training target rather than kill him. 80

Er Ming's disappearance deeply distressed Da Ming and Xiao Wu, who initially believed that humans had killed or captured him. Da Ming blamed himself for ignoring the distant aura of Er Ming's battle, while Xiao Wu felt responsible for having sent Er Ming toward Ye Xinglan. 104 105 During his time locked in Shrek Academy's Confinement Room, Er Ming was occasionally beaten up by students, suffering considerable humiliation before eventually returning. The room initially suppressed all his strength, and the beatings continued even after his power was released. He also recalled occasionally being beaten alongside three human prisoners. 243 He later complained internally that the food provided during his imprisonment was unsuitable for a soul beast and had left him hungry enough to lose weight. 289

In the virtual Douluo II world, the later-era Er Ming and Da Ming appeared at the Clear Sky Sect after Tang San's future god-self had contacted them. Er Ming was astonished to meet the young Tang San from ten thousand years earlier. Although uncomfortable with Tang San's imperious attitude, the two complied because they feared displeasing his god-self. 181 182 They escorted Tang San through the poisonous outskirts of the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, assisted in his body-refinement expedition, and accompanied him when he sought soul beasts for a Clear Sky Hammer soul ring. 182 183 Er Ming subsequently stood behind Tang San during Tang San's challenge to Tang Wulin. Upon seeing Tang Wulin's Golden Dragon Claw, he recognized the Golden Dragon King's aura and expressed shock at its presence in a human. 184

While Er Ming remained missing in the Star Dou Great Forest storyline, Da Ming eventually entered the Core Area to seek the ferocious beasts' help. Scarlet King refused to summon the Beast God, and Da Ming fought him in an attempt to draw Di Tian's attention, suffering serious injuries. 239 240

Er Ming later returned to the Star Dou Great Forest, where he reunited with Xiao Wu and Da Ming after being brought there by the Dragon King version of Di Tian. He recounted his defeat by Chen Xinjie, imprisonment in Shrek Academy's Confinement Room, and repeated beatings by human students; the experience left him deeply aggrieved and humiliated. 240 243 At first, he believed the Beast God had rescued him. After discovering that his escort was a different Di Tian who worked for Shrek Academy, he instead wondered whether the academy had released him after he had served his sentence. When Xiao Wu asked about Tang San, Er Ming said that he did not know the person she called Third Brother and could not provide news of him. 240 242 243

Under the Dragon King version of Di Tian's authority, Er Ming helped Da Ming and Xiao Wu construct a crude Shrek Academy branch in the Star Dou Great Forest. The work took a month; Er Ming and Xiao Wu handled most of the sawing and house construction because Da Ming's beast form lacked hands. 287 Di Tian gave him a Transforming Pill that allowed him to take human form without undertaking human re-cultivation, then assigned him the new name Tai Tan. Despite resenting his compulsory odd jobs and studies, Tai Tan joined the branch with the other soul beasts and began learning the Clear Origin Spirit-Opening Canon. 287 289 290

Di Tian made clear that Er Ming would continue doing odd jobs whether or not he enrolled, treating the labor as an obligation arising from his earlier offense against Shrek Academy. The branch's offered benefits included demon meat as food and access to bloodline-purifying Son of Heaven Fruit through Contribution Points; Er Ming showed particular eagerness to taste the demon meat. 289

Personality

Er Ming is intensely attached to Xiao Wu. He missed her enough to disregard the danger of exposing their connection, and he readily obeyed her request to confront Ye Xinglan. His affection is paired with a childlike stubbornness: he insists he is strong enough to investigate danger, promising to run if he cannot win. 77

He is curious about beings connected to his own bloodline, particularly Yuanen Yehui's Titan Giant Ape martial soul. However, his curiosity quickly becomes forceful; rather than asking her to explain further, he orders her to accompany him. 77 78

Despite his confidence as the King of the Forest, Er Ming recognizes hopeless odds. When Chen Xinjie overwhelms him, he attempts to flee, then makes a final desperate attack and considers self-destruction rather than allowing humans to take his soul ring and soul bone. 79 After experiencing defeat, capture, and getting beaten up by human students in Shrek Academy's confinement room, he displays a sense of grievance regarding his mistreatment. 243

The sight of Chen Xinjie's nine red soul rings provokes anger toward humans who hunt his kind, reminding him of Xiao Wu's mother and other soul beasts killed by Spirit Hall. Facing possible death, he also bitterly assumes that the powerful beasts in the forest's depths would not intervene on his behalf. 79

Tai Tan is reluctant toward academic study and complicated human-style work, finding construction alone burdensome and rejecting Di Tian's suggestion that he learn advanced technologies. Nevertheless, Di Tian's overwhelming authority forces him to accept his role as a branch laborer and student. 287 289 He privately considers the claim that he offended Shrek Academy unfair, since he remembers the encounter chiefly as one in which he was beaten. By this point, however, Di Tian has already beaten him into submission, leaving him unwilling to voice his complaints. 289
