Background / History

Gou Kong is an Earthling soul inhabiting a pure-blooded Saiyan body on Planet Vegeta. After recognizing the danger posed by Frieza and the eventual destruction of the planet, he accepts the name left by the body's original owner and resolves to become strong enough to survive rather than die as insignificant cannon fodder. He adapts to Saiyan customs, Planet Vegeta's harsh conditions, and its food while using his language talent to learn quickly. 4

He becomes a Royal Guard through a personal promotion from King Vegeta. The position grants him palace privileges, but its lifetime-service rule prevents him from freely leaving for Earth, which he regards as a potential refuge from Frieza. 6

Gou Kong befriends Bardock and becomes familiar with Gine and Raditz. He later trains both Raditz and Prince Vegeta extensively, initially as a sparring partner and eventually as their full-time instructor under King Vegeta's orders. His training drastically improves both children, though he worries that changing Raditz's growth may have unpredictable consequences. 8 17

After saving Vegeta from Beerus's attack, Gou Kong's 19,000 battle power is exposed. King Vegeta subsequently expels him from the palace, and he spends a month unconscious while Gine cares for him at Bardock's home. 23 25 26

As Frieza's assault begins, Gou Kong helps Bardock and Gine prepare an escape route and protects them from Dodoria, allowing them to flee. He fights Dodoria and Zarbon while attempting to survive the destruction of Planet Vegeta. 29 34 38 42

Although caught in Frieza's Planet-Destroying Energy Ball, Gou Kong survives a spacetime disturbance and arrives on Earth in the future. He reunites with an adult Raditz during the latter's confrontation with Piccolo and Gohan. 46 47

After establishing that he and Raditz do not intend to conquer Earth, Gou Kong reaches a tentative understanding with Son Goku and Piccolo. He and Raditz then spend nearly half a year training in the mountains, using ancient trees, meteorite fragments, daily sparring, and hunted beasts to strengthen their bodies and ki control. 50 51 53

When Vegeta, Nappa, and the previously unknown female Saiyan Turles arrive on Earth, Gou Kong confronts them. His fight with Turles leads to the appearance of the Divine Origin Tree and the discovery of God Essence Fruits, which can offer immense power at the cost of brutal physical backlash. 55 60 61 67

Gou Kong endures the effects of two God Essence Fruits to protect Earth from Turles and Great Ape Vegeta. After the fruit effects begin fading, he cooperates with Son Goku to empower and redirect a Spirit Bomb, destroying the Divine Origin Tree and defeating Vegeta and Turles. The effort leaves Gou Kong buried beneath the ruins with shattered bones and catastrophic internal injuries. 68 70 73 74

Following his recovery at Capsule Corporation, Gou Kong decides to travel to Namek with Bulma's group because Frieza's forces have become far stronger than expected. He chooses to prepare aboard the Jundavid rather than accompany Son Goku immediately, training in its Gravity Chamber and carrying preserved God Essence Fruits as emergency resources. 76 79 83

On Namek, Gou Kong forms a temporary alliance with Vegeta and Turles, receives a potential unlock from the Grand Elder, and participates in the conflicts involving the Ginyu Force, Cooler's Armored Squadron, Frieza, and King Cold. He is briefly trapped in Ginyu's body before recovering his own body. 87 93 95 97

After Raditz is killed during the conflict with King Cold, Gou Kong's rage triggers his Super Saiyan awakening. He battles King Cold across Namek and a nearby satellite, eventually forcing King Cold's Supernova back and sending both the tyrant and the attack into the sun. 113 117

Following the Namek conflict, Gou Kong spends a year on Planet Yardrat learning Instant Transmission alongside Son Goku. He later returns to Earth and joins the others in preparing for threats connected to the future timeline and Dr. Gero's Androids. 122 124 125

Appearance

Gou Kong possesses a Saiyan body that he initially struggles to recognize as his own. 4

  • Wild black hair. 4
  • Brutish-looking face. 4
  • Thick Saiyan tail. 4
  • Usually wears a tight battle suit and a scouter while serving as a Royal Guard. 6 14
  • His muscles visibly expand when using the Energy Body-Forging Technique. 36
  • Wears beast-hide clothing during his mountain training with Raditz on Earth. 53
  • God Essence Fruit use can enlarge his musculature and create dark-golden energy patterns across his skin. 108 109
  • His rage-state aura initially manifests as silver-gray before developing into a golden Super Saiyan aura. 113 114
  • As a Super Saiyan, his black hair becomes upright and golden, while his eyes turn jade green. 114

Personality

Gou Kong is pragmatic and survival-driven. His initial priority is avoiding Frieza, escaping Planet Vegeta, and reaching Earth rather than becoming involved in events beyond his ability to control. He is highly aware that low combat power makes one expendable in Saiyan society. 4 6

Despite his self-preserving instincts, he develops genuine concern for Bardock's family. He encourages Raditz, worries about the child's fate, protects Bardock and Gine during Dodoria's attack, and risks himself to save Vegeta from Beerus. 10 23 34

He is sarcastic, easily irritated by restrictions, and fond of teasing younger Saiyans, particularly Vegeta and Raditz. In combat, he is observant and willing to acknowledge his own shortcomings, recognizing that his early victory over Vegeta relies heavily on their enormous power gap rather than superior experience. 6 15 16

Gou Kong becomes increasingly patient and methodical as a teacher after reaching Earth. He believes fear of stronger enemies is normal, but that training is necessary to avoid dying helplessly and to protect others. 52 53

Although reluctant to assume responsibility for events beyond his control, he repeatedly chooses to protect Earth and his allies when retreat would endanger them. His willingness to endure God Essence Fruit backlash, remain behind against Frieza, and contribute his remaining strength to the Spirit Bomb reflects this growth. 68 71 73 104

His Super Saiyan transformation intensifies the ferocity inherent in his Saiyan blood. While transformed, he experiences bloodthirsty impulses, but can maintain enough clarity to fight tactically and direct his rage toward avenging Raditz. 114 115 124

Abilities & Skills

Saiyan Physiology

Gou Kong possesses the strength, appetite, resilience, and combat potential of a pure-blooded Saiyan.

  • Requires enormous quantities of high-calorie food after intense training. 7 9
  • Uses a tail and Saiyan combat instincts as part of his physical makeup. 4
  • Can withstand attacks from much weaker opponents with little injury, though his chin is identified as a vulnerable point. 15
  • Recovers substantial stamina after surviving the destruction of Planet Vegeta and arriving on Earth. 47
  • Receives dramatic increases in strength after surviving life-threatening injuries, including his recovery from the Divine Origin Tree battle. 82
  • Can suppress his battle power and regulate his output during combat after refining his ki control on Earth. 53
  • Endures one hundred times Earth's gravity through physical training. 53

Energy Body-Forging Technique

A ki-enhancement technique that channels energy into his muscles to increase physical power while preserving speed and agility. 18

  • Raises his combat power from 19,000 to 24,000 during battle. 38
  • Allows him to contend with and temporarily overwhelm stronger opponents such as Dodoria. 34 36
  • Does not impose the severe loss of speed associated with the transformation Gou Kong compares it to. 18
  • Consumes stamina at an extreme rate and cannot be maintained for long. 18 36 40
  • Leaves him severely weakened once deactivated. 36
  • Is refined through his Earth training, allowing up to three activations in a single battle without immediate strain. 53
  • Raises his battle power to 72,000 during his battle with Turles. 60
  • Can be used alongside the temporary power gained from God Essence Fruits, though the combined strain severely damages his body. 65 66

God Essence Fruit

God Essence Fruits are dark-golden fruits produced by the Divine Origin Tree that grant Gou Kong immense, but dangerous, enhancements.

  • A single fruit sharply increases his combat power and physical performance. 65
  • The immediate amplification is temporary and causes muscle pain, spasms, exhaustion, and destabilized energy control. 66 67
  • Consuming two fruits simultaneously produces potentially fatal backlash; Gou Kong survives through exceptional endurance and willpower. 68 69
  • The fruits cannot safely be combined with a Great Ape transformation, as the compounded power may cause the user to explode. 67
  • Repeated consumption also contributes to lasting physical growth even after the temporary boost fades. 82 109
  • He keeps recovered fruits in Capsule Corporation capsules for portability and emergency use. 83 84

Super Saiyan Transformation

Gou Kong awakens the legendary Super Saiyan transformation after Raditz's death pushes his rage and grief past their limit. 113 114

  • His initial awakening manifests through a silver-gray aura before stabilizing into the complete golden-haired Super Saiyan form. 113 114
  • Greatly increases his strength, speed, durability, and reaction time, allowing him to overwhelm King Cold in his final form. 114 115
  • Maintains clearer combat judgment than his earlier rage state despite his intense killing intent. 115
  • His Super Saiyan state carries an aggressive, bloodthirsty impulse that he must consciously restrain. 124

Potential Unlock

The Grand Elder of Namek unlocks part of Gou Kong's latent potential by placing a hand on his head. 93

  • Releases potential greater than that displayed by Krillin and Son Gohan during their own unlocks. 93
  • Raises his measured base battle power to 280,000. 95
  • Provides a substantial foundation for his later battles against Frieza's forces and King Cold. 95 109

Ki Manipulation

Gou Kong has developed several practical applications of ki through training and combat.

  • Energy shield — Creates a protective barrier capable of blocking or mitigating enemy bombardment and Dodoria's physical charge. 15 39 41
  • Energy blasts — Fires condensed energy spheres, cannons, and compressed energy waves. 34 37 40
  • Energy redirection — Uses small energy spheres and precise positioning to push an incoming energy cannon off course. 37
  • Ki sensing — Locates Dodoria through his energy even when dust obscures visibility. 34
  • Flight — Can fly, though exhaustion after battle can prevent him from using the technique. 36
  • Ki suppression — Learns to conceal his energy and control his output without relying on a Scouter. 53
  • Solar Flare — Learns the blinding technique from Krillin and uses it to create escape and attack opportunities against superior enemies. 84 104 110
  • Instant Transmission — Learns the Yardratian movement technique, allowing travel across immense distances by locking onto a detectable ki signature. 122

Hand-to-Hand Combat

Gou Kong is a powerful close-range fighter who favors direct, efficient strikes.

  • Uses punches, elbows, knees, headbutts, and kicks with decisive force. 29 34 36 39
  • Kills four Frieza Force soldiers before they can fire or report his escape preparations. 29
  • Defeats Dodoria through a prolonged barrage of over one hundred punches followed by a full-power finishing strike. 36
  • Uses tactical target selection, attempting to remove the weaker Dodoria before focusing on Zarbon. 39
  • Admits that he lacks extensive real-combat experience compared with his raw power. 15
  • Uses grappling and relentless close-quarters pressure to suppress King Cold on a nearby satellite, limiting the tyrant's ability to exploit ranged attacks. 116
  • Combines Solar Flare with coordinated melee assaults when fighting alongside Turles. 110
