Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan as Yu Yuanzhen's younger son. Unlike his elder brother Yu Xiaogan, who possesses the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul and high innate soul power, Yu Xiaogang awakened with only innate half-rank soul power and the mutated Piglet Martial Soul Luo Sanpao. The contrast left him deeply resentful of his own circumstances and envious of more gifted relatives. 38

He and Yu Changge share the same innate soul power and a similar mutated martial soul, but are distant relatives beyond five generations. Yu Xiaogang initially treats Yu Changge as an imaginary rival whose lower standing he can use to reassure himself. 2 38

After Yu Changge begins studying martial soul theory, Yu Xiaogang dismisses theory as unnecessary and urges him to focus solely on cultivation. His objections persist even after Yu Changge explains that knowledge is necessary to identify and select suitable soul beasts. 10 24

Yu Xiaogang's jealousy turns openly hostile as Yu Changge's progress becomes apparent. He invokes his status as the “young clan leader,” despite this title being self-proclaimed, and repeatedly attempts to diminish Yu Changge to restore his own confidence. 15 26

Yu Yuanzhen eventually forces Yu Xiaogang to apologize to Yu Xiaogan and Yu Changge's parents, slaps him for his conduct, and orders him to attend the clan school. At rank 12, Yu Xiaogang obtains his first soul ring from a Void Thunder Gas-Swelling Dragon. Though the absorption succeeds, Luo Sanpao manifests a flammable fart-based soul skill rather than the breath attack he expected, subjecting him to further ridicule. 43 44

When Yu Changge is revealed as a renowned theoretical master, Spirit Hall Honorary Elder, Soul King, and victor over Tang Hao, Yu Xiaogang suffers repeated public breakdowns. After Yu Changge returns to the clan, Yu Xiaogang confronts him in a frenzied state, accuses him of withholding the martial-soul cultivation method, and attempts to seize his collar. During this period, Yu Xiaogang also becomes jealous after learning that Bibi Dong is Yu Changge's girlfriend and a potentially valuable marriage alliance for the clan. His remarks provoke Yu Xiaogan, who warns that he may be expelled from the family if he continues to covet her. 198

Following several months of confinement, Yu Xiaogang is released with a gloomier outlook. Acknowledging that resources alone will not carry him through his bottleneck toward rank 30, he requests real-combat sparring from Yu Yuanzhen and specifically asks to train against Yu Xiaogan or Yu Luomian. Yu Xiaogang is proud, insecure, and intensely preoccupied with talent, status, and comparison. His low innate soul power and Luo Sanpao's appearance cause him lasting shame, which he channels into arrogance toward those he considers beneath him and resentment toward those who outperform him. 26 38

He rejects advice when it threatens his self-image, particularly regarding theoretical study and the limitations of his martial soul. He later studies theory and boasts about it, but his showboating alienates both stronger and weaker students within the clan. 29 125

Despite his volatility, Yu Xiaogang can show restraint when faced with immediate danger. He ultimately accepts Yu Yuanzhen's warning not to force a thousand-year second soul ring beyond his physical limits. 149

Yu Xiaogang refuses to accept that Yu Changge escaped the fate he believes they shared.
