Background / History

Before formally meeting Qin Yao, Mao Yuchong and his seven sworn brothers covertly cleared dangers along the road toward Nine Suns Commandery. Seeing Qin Yao as a stubborn young man resembling Mao's deceased younger brother, Mao intended to protect him from harm despite initially demanding “road-protection silver” 179 183.

Mao Yuchong first encounters Qin Yao at Double Hump Ridge while leading eight martial artists who seek “road-protection silver.” After recognizing Qin Yao’s strength, he accepts Qin Yao’s conciliatory gift of seized bandit weapons rather than escalating the confrontation 180.

He subsequently guides Qin Yao, Qin Dashan, and Qin Lan to the military dependents camp, where he supports Qin Yao’s plan to protect his family from local bullies. Mao and his squad also help clean and organize the family’s new residence before departing with an offer of future assistance 183 185.

At the Foreign Repelling Camp, Mao is assigned to the Sharp Blade Squad as its centurion while concurrently serving as deputy commander under Yu Xiaoqian. His original group is assigned alongside him, creating a notably strong squad composition that draws resentment from other recruits 189 193.

Following Yu Xiaoqian’s retaliatory assault on his household, Mao’s mother dies after the destruction of his home and the shock of the attack. His wife and five-year-old daughter survive only because Qin Yao intervenes against Yu Xiaoqian and her guards 248 250 251.

Mao later joins the Sharp Blade Squad’s final confrontation with Yu Yanghai and Yu Danhe. He charges Yu Danhe alongside Niu Qingren and the other loyal squad members, but suffers a fatal chest wound. Personality

Mao Yuchong is experienced, practical, and protective. He gives Qin Yao battlefield guidance before their first major engagement and leads from the front when the Sharp Blade Squad charges the Golden Frost Barbarians 188 195.

He is deeply loyal to Qin Yao, whom he increasingly treats as the effective leader of the Sharp Blade Squad. Yet his loyalty is tempered by caution: when Qin Yao seeks to execute Yu Xiaoqian, Mao urges restraint because of the Yu Family’s political power and the danger of retaliation 241 245 254.

His devotion to his own family is equally uncompromising. When masked attackers assault his home, he fights by trading wounds and defeats all four; when Yu Xiaoqian’s men later threaten his wife and daughter, he resists despite being outmatched 249 250.

Mao is also courageous to the point of self-sacrifice. Although aware that Yu Danhe is a Mystic Gathering Realm expert beyond his ability to defeat, he joins the other loyal Sharp Blade members in charging the Yu patriarch rather than abandoning Qin Yao 303 304.
