Background / History
Whis was present on the Supreme Kai World when Broly's rampage on Vampa produced an energy disturbance detectable across the universe. Using the crystal orb on his staff, he identified the source as an exceptionally pure Saiyan energy signature and determined that its owner surpassed Goku and Vegeta in base-form energy. He described the power as mastered “origin power,” rather than strength forced out through rage or external stimulation. 12 14
He accompanied Beerus to Vampa, using divine power to travel through hyperspace and protect their spacecraft during the journey. Before landing, Whis scanned the planet and recovered information from Paragus's crashed personal recorder, including Broly's name and birthday. 16 19
During Beerus's test and ensuing battle with Broly, Whis remained an observer and analyst. He recognized Broly's progression from raw instinct to willful energy control, identified his transformed state as the “Humanoid Great Ape” form, and tracked his growth toward the quasi-God of Destruction threshold. 23 25
When Beerus and Broly's final energy clash threatened to destabilize space around Vampa and spread destruction across several light-years, Whis intervened. With a tap and turn of his staff, he neutralized both forces without an explosion, effectively defining the catastrophic energy as nonexistent. He then ordered the battle to stop. 40 41
Afterward, Whis formally explained the Tournament of Power to Broly, respected his demand to retain control of his own fate after the tournament, and transported Broly and Beerus from Vampa to Earth through a dimensional passage. 42 43 44
Appearance
Whis is a tall, lean, elegant figure with silver-white hair, pale violet or blue eyes, and a composed, otherworldly bearing. He habitually carries an Angel Staff topped by a crystal orb. 12 16 40
- Slender build and graceful movements. 16 40
- Silver-white hair. 40 41
- Pale violet eyes that become notably cold and focused when intervening in the battle. 40 41
- Carries a staff with a crystal orb capable of scanning, projecting information, and channeling divine power. 12 19
- Usually wears a faint, enigmatic smile. 12 19
Personality
Whis is consistently calm, polite, and difficult to read. He lightly teases Beerus, particularly over food and temper, while still offering measured guidance on serious matters such as Goku's overconfidence and Universe 7's prospects in the Tournament of Power. 12 16 47
Though he often observes events with amusement, Whis becomes visibly grave when cosmic balance is endangered. During the destruction of Vampa, he shifts from detached interest to focused authority, stopping Beerus and Broly once their battle threatens the surrounding space. 37 39 40 41
He treats Broly with courtesy and recognizes both his intelligence and his wish for freedom. Rather than dismissing Broly's condition for joining the tournament, Whis assures him that his post-tournament fate remains his own. 42 43
Abilities & Skills
Divine Energy Sensing and Analysis
Whis can perceive and assess energy signatures across immense distances through the crystal orb of his staff.
- Detected Broly's energy fluctuation on Vampa from the Supreme Kai World. 12
- Identified the energy as belonging to a pure-blooded Saiyan. 12 13
- Created an energy chart comparing Broly's base-form energy to Goku and Vegeta's. 14
- Judged Broly's energy to be unusually pure, stable, and rooted in mastered origin power. 14
