Background / History

Xu Jing was originally passed over for the throne in favor of his elder brother, Xu Zhi. Sent back to his fief, he cultivated, gathered supporters among ministers, allied with the then-suppressed Holy Spirit Cult, and ultimately staged a coup. Kong Deming did not intervene, judging the imperial struggle by whether its contenders were capable; Xu Jing successfully overthrew Xu Zhi and became emperor. 111 162

His seizure of the throne severely damaged his Source Power and foundation. The injury shortened his lifespan and could not be cured even with the empire's finest healing pills, leaving him dependent on medicine and increasingly vulnerable to emotional strain. 57 111 189

As emperor, Xu Jing commanded the Five Great Nation Protecting Soul Engineer Corps and the Palace Worship Hall, giving him control over more than half of the empire's strength. 36 He initially worked with the Holy Spirit Cult but never regarded it as a true ally; he intended to use it during a future war of unification, then destroy it once it had served its purpose. 93

Xu Jing first declares Xu Tianran Crown Prince, using his absolute authority to end the immediate dispute among the imperial princes. 35 36 When rumors spread that Xu Tianran is impotent, Xu Jing summons him, orders a full inspection, and resolves to remove him rather than risk the throne passing outside the Xu bloodline. 56 57

With his own health declining, Xu Jing eventually chooses Xu Tianyu as the new Crown Prince and begins preparing the succession. 104 111 116

Recruitment of Wang Chen

After Wang Chen kills a Titled Douluo-level Evil Soul Master, Xu Jing learns of his extraordinary talent and recognizes both his value and danger. 93 94 He chooses to bind Wang Chen to the imperial family by arranging a marriage with Xu Tianzhen, then rewards him with high status, resources, and access to the Palace Worship Hall. 94 100 103

Holy Spirit Cult Maneuvering

Xu Jing regards the Holy Spirit Cult as a useful but dangerous force beyond his full control. 93 104 When Shen Kang defects and reveals the cult's relocation to the Douluo Three Kingdoms, Xu Jing sees an opportunity to weaken the cult and recruit its non-evil offerings into imperial service. 178 179

Fall from Power

Wang Chen's godly-level divine sense and the sun-and-moon phenomenon above Mingdu convince Xu Jing that his son-in-law has become an existential threat to the throne. Xu Jing responds by summoning Ninth Level Soul Engineers and the Five Great Nation Protecting Soul Engineer Corps. 186
