Background / History

Golden Lion was a pirate of the previous era, renowned alongside Gol D. Roger and Edward Newgate. Unlike Roger and Whitebeard, he sought to rule the world, believing that this was the proper ambition of the strong. 20 70

Twenty years before his death, Shiki attacked Marine Headquarters alone after Roger's capture. Sengoku and Garp defeated and imprisoned him in Impel Down's Level Six, Infinite Hell. He escaped by cutting off the legs restrained by Seastone shackles and replacing them with his swords, Sakura Ten and Kogarashi—the first known prisoner to escape Impel Down. 67 73

While in hiding, Shiki controlled several unsupported floating islands through the Float-Float Fruit. The rudder embedded in his head severely weakened his Haki, while the loss of his legs undermined his former two-sword fighting style. Despite this decline, he remained convinced he could still rule the world. 67

Rody discovered Shiki's sky islands while traveling from Sky Island toward Alabasta and attacked his palace. Shiki attempted to recruit Rody into the Flying Pirates; Rody refused, declaring that he wanted Shiki's head as a trophy. 67 68
