Overview

Impel Down is an eight-century-old deep-sea prison in the Calm Belt. Countless inmates have been tortured and died within it, leaving the structure saturated with resentment, rage, hatred, and other negative emotions. Prolonged exposure is said to drive weak-willed people insane or otherwise mentally impaired. 115

Before Godslayer Rody's assault, Golden Lion Shiki was regarded as the only prisoner ever to escape the prison. He escaped by severing his legs, which were restrained by Seastone shackles, and replacing them with his swords. 67 73

Structure

Level Designation Known conditions and inmates
1 Crimson Lotus Hell Guarded by Blue Gorillas; holds comparatively weak prisoners. 115
2 Beast Hell Filled with monstrous jailer creatures, including human-faced lions and other hybrid beasts. 116
3 Hunger Hell / Starvation Hell Prisoners are severely weakened by hunger; Sadie and Domino investigate the intrusion here. 117 118
4 Blazing Hell / Burning Hell A fire-filled level above a pool of blood; guarded by Warden Magellan. 119 121
5 Freezing Hell Extremely cold; contains pirates with bounties over 100 million, many of whom are frozen or near death. 123
6 Infinite Hell / Eternal Hell Houses the prison's most dangerous inmates, including Douglas Bullet, Fire Kirin Aka, Thunder God Ames, and formerly Shiryu. 67 119 123 124

Security

Personnel

  • Magellan — Warden and Impel Down's strongest defender, known as the “King of Hell.” He wielded the Venom-Venom Fruit and was responsible for defending the fourth level. 118 119 121
  • Hannyabal — Vice Warden; ordered to release Shiryu and confront the Blackbeard Pirates during the simultaneous breach. 119
  • Saldeath — Chief Jailer who reported Rody's invasion to Magellan and was tasked with contacting the World Government and Marines. 119
  • Sadie — Chief Jailer and commander of the four Jailer Beasts. 117 118
  • Domino — Deputy Warden who investigated the communications failure with Sadie. 117 118
  • Shiryu — A former prison officer imprisoned for extreme bloodlust; released to counter the Blackbeard Pirates. 119

Jailer Beasts

Sadie commands four failed Zoan awakenings whose animal consciousnesses have overtaken their bodies. Their physical recovery is notable, but Rody judged their fighting ability and technique as inferior to genuine Zoan awakenings. 118

  • Minotaurus
  • Mino Tailless Beast
  • Minorhinoceros
  • Minozebra 118

Communications

Impel Down relies on Transponder Snails for contact between levels and with outside forces. Rody disrupted these communications with a Vibranium-based signal-jamming device, preventing guards from reporting the breach normally and allowing other intruders to reach Level Six. 115 116 119 123

History

Impel Down stood for approximately eight hundred years as a prison feared for its harsh conditions, layered defenses, and seemingly inescapable design. Its reputation was reinforced by Golden Lion Shiki's status as its sole known escapee prior to Rody's assault. 73 115

During the events surrounding Portgas D. Ace's execution, Godslayer Rody infiltrated Impel Down from above after teleporting to the rebuilt Sabaody Archipelago and flying to the Calm Belt. He entered the first level while using a signal jammer to isolate the prison from outside communication. 115

Godslayer's Invasion

Initial breach

Rody killed the first-level guards and Blue Gorillas, then massacred the prisoners of Crimson Lotus Hell after dismissing them as too weak and noisy. He proceeded into Beast Hell, where he swiftly killed the Human-Faced Feathered Lion and the other monsters. 115 116

At the second level, he forced prisoners to kill their cellmates within five minutes. Only survivors who killed everyone else in their cells were freed; Rody then led them toward the lower levels. 117

Collapse of the prison defense

Sadie and Domino confronted Rody alongside the four Jailer Beasts. The Jailer Beasts were restrained with Seastone chains, while Sadie and Domino were captured. 118

Magellan confronted Rody in Burning Hell with the Venom Demon, a colossal corrosive poison construct. Rody answered with the larger Shadow Demon God, then killed Magellan after cutting through his Venom Dragon. 121 122

After Magellan's death, Rody's shadows consumed the fourth-level prisoners, yielding twenty-three Devil Fruits. He then killed every prisoner on Freezing Hell before descending to Infinite Hell. 123

Infinite Hell and God's Knights

On Level Six, Rody encountered the Blackbeard Pirates, who had taken advantage of the disrupted surveillance to recruit prisoners. Rody allowed Blackbeard to leave, but killed weaker inmates and recruited Douglas Bullet, Fire Kirin Aka, and Thunder God Ames. 123 124

The World Government deployed God's Knights, led by Saint Figarland Garling, to stop the invasion. Rody used Domain Expansion: Chimera Shadow Garden and summoned Mahoraga and other creatures to confront them. 126 128

Mahoraga killed Garling during the battle. Rody's forces seized Sally and escaped Impel Down through the Dimensional Matrix as Navy and World Government reinforcements arrived. 130

Notable Inmates

  • Golden Lion Shiki — Former Level Six prisoner and the only known escapee before Rody's invasion; escaped by amputating his own Seastone-shackled legs. 67 73
  • Douglas Bullet — “Devil's Heir,” imprisoned for twenty years before Rody recruited him from Infinite Hell. 124 133
  • Fire Kirin Aka — Level Six prisoner recruited by Rody. 124
  • Thunder God Ames — White tiger mink imprisoned on Level Six; joined Rody after learning that he had defeated Kizaru. 124
  • Shiryu — Imprisoned former officer released by Hannyabal on Magellan's orders to deal with Blackbeard's group. 119
  • Vasco Shot — Level Six prisoner killed immediately after provoking Rody. 123

Trivia

  • Impel Down's accumulated negative emotions are intense enough that Rody senses them immediately upon entering the prison. 115
  • The prison's simultaneous breaches by Rody and the Blackbeard Pirates occurred shortly before Ace's execution. 119 123
  • The Five Elders ordered Marine forces to redeploy to Impel Down after the Summit War ceasefire, due to the threat posed by Rody and God's Knights' ongoing battle there. 128
