Background / History

Tsunade spent years traveling outside Konoha, avoiding the village while gambling heavily. She and Shizune routinely fled casinos after her losses; on one occasion, Tsunade incurred a debt of ten million ryo while disguised as a little girl. Her reputation as the “Great Sucker” had become widespread enough that major casinos displayed wanted posters of her. 79

Her prolonged departure was tied to painful losses, disappointment in Konoha, and her inability to remain detached from its fate. During the Third Shinobi World War, she developed hemophobia and worked from the rear directing medical shinobi rather than fighting at the front. There, she witnessed the horrific effects of Uchiha Mirai’s toxin on shinobi caught in its range. 83

Sarutobi Hiruzen recalled Tsunade to Konoha by offering to settle her accumulated gambling debts. On her return, she learned that Danzo had used Hashirama Senju’s cells and stolen Sharingan in human experiments. She condemned the experiments and considered Danzo’s execution deserved. 80
