Background / History
Earlier Conflict with Uchiha Mirai
Three years before Mirai’s return, Danzo advocated assassinating him before his power fully matured. Sarutobi Hiruzen rejected the proposal because killing Mirai would enrage the Uchiha Clan. Instead, Konoha’s leadership used Root and ANBU to pressure Mirai into seclusion 11 13 26.
When Mirai returned, Danzo opposed concessions to the Uchiha and repeatedly urged their elimination. He invoked the Second Hokage’s teachings to portray the clan as inherently evil, while Hiruzen initially insisted on investigating their intentions before taking action 8 11.
The Cloud Ninja Incident
After Mirai killed Cloud ninja, Danzo proposed exploiting the threat to Konoha’s peace agreement: demand that the Uchiha surrender Mirai, then use any refusal as grounds to suppress the entire clan 19.
This effort lost support when Hiashi Hyuga revealed that Mirai had saved his daughter from Cloud ninja seeking the Byakugan. Danzo tried to redirect the meeting toward avoiding war, but Choza Akimichi challenged the attempt to dismiss the circumstances behind the killings 22.
Root Infiltration and Failed Assassination
Mirai distracted Danzo through his contact with Naruto while sending a nuclear clone into Root’s base. The clone stole Hashirama Cells and impersonated a masked man claiming to be Uchiha Madara. Danzo rushed back with the Body Flicker Technique, but his Wind Release attack failed to stop the intruder’s escape 32 33.
Danzo subsequently deployed elite Root operatives against Mirai, including Aburame Shikuro, whose nano poison insects he regarded as an ideal counter to Mirai’s poisonous abilities. The assassination failed, leaving the attackers dead and Mirai unharmed 39 42.
At the resulting confrontation, Danzo could not persuade the assembled Konoha shinobi to attack Mirai. His attempt to pressure Fugaku also backfired when Fugaku disclosed that Mirai was already the Uchiha clan head. The Uchiha then demanded accountability for the assassination attempt 42 43 44.
Attempted Extermination of the Uchiha
As Konoha’s leadership moved toward exterminating the clan, Danzo ordered Shisui to assassinate Mirai. Unknown to him, Shisui was following Mirai’s plans; Mirai selected Danzo as the target of Kotoamatsukami and intended to turn him against the masked “Madara” 47 48 51.
Danzo gathered hundreds of shinobi from Root, ANBU, and several ninja clans for a nighttime assault on the Uchiha compound. He expected Fugaku to avoid direct resistance and believed Shisui’s assassination mission would reduce Mirai’s threat 52 53 59.
The compound was a prepared trap. After learning that his forces were suffering heavy casualties, Danzo entered the battle personally. He killed a fleeing Root subordinate and confronted Fugaku before Mirai trapped him inside his Domain Expansion 56 57.
Defeat and Execution
Inside Mirai’s independent world, Danzo was tortured with spikes and could not use summoning techniques. He escaped one fatal outcome through Izanagi and counterattacked with wind blades, but Mirai’s control over the world’s rules dispersed them. A subsequent Godzilla-claw strike destroyed another of Danzo’s lives 58 59 60.
Danzo returned to the compound bloodied, missing his right arm and right eye, and begged Hiruzen to save him. Mirai displayed the severed arm as evidence that Danzo had combined Hashirama Cells with stolen Uchiha Sharingan 61.
Hiruzen initially sought to place Danzo in ANBU custody. Faced with Mirai, Fugaku, and Shisui’s Mangekyo Sharingan and Susanoo, he ultimately allowed Danzo’s death sentence. Mirai executed Danzo with a colossal blade, leaving a ravine at Konoha’s edge 61 62 84.
Appearance
- Elderly: Described as an elderly man when he approaches Shisui 51.
- Bandages: Wears bandages around his right arm and part of his face; his left eye is the single exposed eye 36 56.
- Cane: Regularly leans on a cane and pounds it against the ground during angry confrontations 32 42 43.
- Augmented right arm: White, with a human face at the shoulder and multiple implanted Sharingan 61.
- Final injuries: Returns from Mirai’s world with split skin, extensive bleeding, and the loss of his right arm and right eye 61.
Personality
Danzo presents extreme measures as necessary sacrifices for Konoha. He repeatedly labels the Uchiha inherently evil and uses accusations of “endangering the village” to justify assassination and extermination. His plans also serve personal interests: during the compound assault, he anticipates collecting the victims’ Sharingan to strengthen his transplanted arm 19 43 52 56.
His ambition to become Hokage is a deep source of resentment. Hiruzen’s authority forces him to remain behind the scenes, and Mirai’s mockery of that unfulfilled ambition nearly makes him lose control in public 43.
Although meticulous about protecting Root’s secrets, Danzo repeatedly underestimates his opponents. He assumes Fugaku will remain passive and initially mistakes the compound’s fierce fighting for a successful extermination. His intolerance of failure extends to killing his own fleeing subordinate 32 52 56 57.

- Further crimes exposed: Records reveal that Danzo abducted at least a dozen Konoha villagers for human experimentation 67.
- Clan resentment: The deaths of elite clan shinobi mobilized for his assault contribute to opposition against Hiruzen during the later Hokage succession struggle 105 108.
