Background / History
The Uchiha are a prominent Konoha shinobi clan descended from the Sage of Six Paths’ lineage. Their inherited “Sage Eyes” place them in the same distant ancestral line as the Senju and Uzumaki clans, whose bloodlines are associated with the Sage Body. 38
After Madara Uchiha left the village, the clan no longer had a formal clan-head position. In practice, the captain of the Konoha Police Force served as the clan’s leader, while the Elder Council held much of the clan’s authority. 7
The clan’s relationship with Konoha deteriorated after Uchiha Setsuna’s rebellion and the Second Hokage’s death. Village policy increasingly isolated the Uchiha, while the clan’s own aloof and hostile conduct deepened its political exclusion. 7 11
At the time of Qiao Luo/Indra’s early career, the clan has a little over one thousand members, slightly more than two hundred of whom are shinobi. Sharingan users are comparatively rare. 6
Fifteen years after the Police Force captaincy was abolished, the Third Hokage authorizes its restoration in recognition of Uchiha wartime service. Indra defeats Fugaku’s challenge through Sharingan genjutsu and is elected captain, reorganizing the force into four squads of one captain, one vice-captain, and ten members each. 90
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Uchiha’s signature dōjutsu is closely connected to extreme emotional fluctuation. Trauma, grief, and emotional instability can trigger its awakening and evolution, contributing to the clan’s reputation for intense or unstable behavior. 5 40
- A one-tomoe Sharingan is considered sufficient to practically guarantee elite genin-level potential. 6
- A two-tomoe Sharingan can contend with a special jōnin. 6
- Three-tomoe users are considered elites even among jōnin. 6
- The Sharingan grants exceptional dynamic vision, supporting both swordsmanship and ocular genjutsu. 6
- Only Uchiha who have awakened the Sharingan may enter the Uchiha Shrine’s inner meeting area and participate in major clan decisions. 90
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced Sharingan evolution capable of overwhelming conventional opponents, but it can impose severe physical and psychological strain on its user. 83 84
- Uchiha Mikoto’s Heavenly Concealment — Her left eye foresees possible death scenarios within the next three days, allowing her to avoid them; repeated use rapidly drains her life force. 85
- Uchiha Mikoto’s Tsukuyomi — Her right eye traps a target’s consciousness in an illusionary space where pain is experienced as real. 85
- Heavenly Concealment: Tsukuyomi — Combining both eyes manifests a scarlet illusionary space in reality and can permanently erase death-causing attacks or limbs within the illusion until the technique ends. 83 85
- Excess spiritual energy from Mangekyō use can overwhelm the body, causing frailty, illness, and potentially death without a means of restoring physical–spiritual balance. 84
Uchiha-style Swordsmanship
Awakened Uchiha are generally capable swordsmen, and the clan maintains a refined swordsmanship tradition that exploits Sharingan perception. 6
- The style is designed to complement the Sharingan’s ability to read movement and timing. 6
- It forms the foundation for the Phantom Body Flicker Technique. 7
- Uchiha Ryoshi teaches the style personally to Qiao Luo, who masters it in three days. 7
Genjutsu
The clan maintains several Sharingan-based illusion techniques for deception, psychological pressure, and battlefield control. 6
- Phantom Body Flicker Technique — Creates multiple phantoms through ocular power; at a high level, the phantoms can remain after being struck and attack alongside the user. 6
- Hell Viewing Technique — Forces a target to see what they fear most, attacking their mind directly. 6
- Indra later uses a powerful Sharingan genjutsu to make Fugaku experience being cut apart across his body, incapacitating him without physically attacking him. 90
Clan Resources
- Ninja Cat Clan contract — The Uchiha maintain a generations-long summoning contract with the Ninja Cat Clan. The cats are valued for stealth and perception rather than direct combat power. 7
- Cat Granny’s weapon shop — The clan has a dedicated weapon supplier linked to the Ninja Cat Clan, including access to chakra-metal weapons. 6 7
- Clan ninjutsu exchange system — Most clan techniques require contributions before a member may exchange for them, unless they receive direct instruction from an elder. 6
- Uchiha Shrine — Serves as the site of high-level clan meetings involving awakened Sharingan users, jōnin, and the Elder Council. 90
Relationships
- Konohagakure — The Uchiha are a founding-era Konoha clan but remain politically isolated after the Second Hokage’s era; the Third Hokage seeks to cultivate cooperative members such as Indra and Mikoto. 7 11 49
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Supports Indra and Mikoto as Uchiha who have inherited the Will of Fire, later backing Indra’s appointment as Police Force captain. 7 75 89
- Konoha Police Force — The clan’s principal institutional authority within Konoha; its captaincy is restored after fifteen years and becomes Indra’s position. 90
- Ninja Cat Clan — Longstanding contracted allies who provide reconnaissance and sensory support to Uchiha summoners. 7 8
- Senju and Uzumaki clans — Distantly related through the Sage of Six Paths’ lineage; the Uchiha inherit Sage Eyes, while the Senju and Uzumaki are associated with the Sage Body. 38
- Madara Uchiha — Watches the clan from concealment and initially selects Indra as a potential successor for his plans before shifting his attention to Mikoto after her Mangekyō awakening. 72 85
- Uchiha Ryoshi — Elder Council member and a comparatively conciliatory “dove” within the clan; he supports Qiao Luo/Indra and trains him in clan techniques. 6 7
- Uchiha Fugaku — Indra’s principal rival for the restored Police Force captaincy; his political and personal resentment ends when Indra overwhelms him with genjutsu. 89 90
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early War Period
Uchiha Ryoshi trains Qiao Luo/Indra in clan swordsmanship and genjutsu after his one-tomoe Sharingan awakens. Ryoshi’s support allows him to bypass the clan’s usual contribution-based process for learning techniques. 6 7
Indra and Mikoto form contracts with ninja cats and begin frontline missions under Tsunade. Their effectiveness in battle helps establish them as unusually dependable Uchiha in the eyes of Konoha’s leadership. 7 8 49
Konoha’s Political Cultivation
Hiruzen identifies Indra and Mikoto as rare Uchiha who appear mild-tempered and aligned with the Will of Fire. He opposes Danzō’s proposal to recruit them into Root, instead bringing them into ANBU and granting them resources and forbidden techniques. 49
After the Land of Whirlpools mission, Indra and Mikoto are promoted to special jōnin and permitted to observe jōnin councils, giving them greater access to Konoha’s political sphere. 72
Mangekyō Awakening and Madara’s Interest
Mikoto awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan after believing Indra has been killed by the Third Kazekage. Her power devastates the surrounding Hidden Sand forces, but its imbalance between spiritual and physical energy threatens her health. 83 84
Mikoto’s awakening draws Madara’s attention. He judges her to be a more useful successor than Indra, whom he considers diminished after the use of Izanagi. 85
Restoration of the Police Force
Following Hatake Sakumo’s death and Indra’s growing reputation as a medical reformer and Academy teacher, Hiruzen renews plans to use him as a bridge between Konoha and the Uchiha Clan. 89
At the Uchiha Shrine, Indra wins the restored Police Force captaincy over Fugaku. His victory returns an official avenue of political influence to the clan and formally restores the Police Force’s active role in Konoha’s internal security. 90
Trivia
- The clan’s members are extensively interrelated through internal marriage, so Indra and Mikoto address older Uchiha jōnin as relatives. 11
- Most Uchiha elders initially prefer Fugaku for Police Force captain because they believe he would be easier to influence than Indra. 90
- The clan has twenty-three jōnin present at the Police Force captaincy meeting. 90
