Background

Wen Zhong is Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s personal disciple and a senior Great Shang official entrusted with military command. Tongtian Sage permits him to remain in Great Shang during the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation because of his long service, rank, and authority within the dynasty 8 25.

For nearly ten years, he commanded 100,000 Great Shang troops in the North Sea against Yuan Futong and the Seventy-Two Lords. He recognized that Yuan Futong’s forces were demons and that the protracted rebellion was part of a larger conspiracy 7.

As Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s disciple, Wen Zhong has the standing to directly enter Jade Wanderer Palace on Golden Turtle Island and seek an audience with Tongtian Sage 36 56. His rapid rise after training in the Chaos Pearl astonishes the Interception Sect’s second-generation disciples, including his own master 57.

Personality

Wen Zhong is steadfastly loyal to Great Shang and deeply protective of its troops. During the North Sea ambush, he immediately organized the army’s defense rather than allowing panic to spread 8.

He is direct and warlike, seeking immediate permission to campaign against Western Qi after learning of the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. However, he accepts Di Xin’s order to build Great Shang’s strength before going to war 36.

Learning that Great Shang and the Interception Sect are being targeted by the tribulation leaves him furious, but he ultimately commits himself to Di Xin’s plan for unity and resistance 36 37.

Wen Zhong is fiercely protective of his fellow Interception Sect disciples. He aids Shen Gongbao’s effort to join the Interception Sect, saves Shiji Niangniang from Taiyi True Person’s ambush, and treats attacks on his sect siblings as attacks on himself 58 60.

North Sea Campaign

Wen Zhong leads Great Shang’s North Sea expedition against Yuan Futong and the Seventy-Two Lords. When the rebels and Nine Infants launch a surprise assault, he rallies the encampment and confronts Yuan Futong, only for Nine Infants to personally target him 7 8.

Di Xuan, disguised behind a white mask, intercepts Nine Infants and saves Wen Zhong. After Di Chen and Di Xiao annihilate Nine Infants, Wen Zhong uses the opening to kill Yuan Futong and directs Great Shang’s army to eliminate the remaining rebels 8 10 37.

Return to Chaoge

After the North Sea victory, Wen Zhong returns to Chaoge with his forces and is welcomed by Shang Rong, Bigan, and Di Xin. During a private audience, Di Xin reveals the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation, Western Qi’s founding, and Jiang Shang’s role as Great Zhou’s prime minister 36.

Wen Zhong initially demands permission to attack Western Qi at once, but accepts Di Xin’s strategy of secretly strengthening Great Shang first 36.

Revelation of Di Xin’s Power

Wen Zhong seeks the identity of the white-masked cultivator who saved him. Di Xin introduces Di Xuan and reveals that Di Xuan is his Evil Corpse, while the two cultivators who killed Nine Infants were Di Xin’s Good Corpse and Self Corpse 37.

After learning that Di Xin has Great Perfection Quasi-Saint cultivation but still requires Great Shang’s unity to face the Heavenly Dao Saints, Wen Zhong swears to support him fully 37.

Chaos Pearl Training

Wen Zhong gathers his six disciples, the Mo Family Four Generals, the Heng and Ha Generals, Deng Jiugong, Deng Chanyu, and other officers before entering the Chaos Pearl’s spatial world under Di Xuan’s guidance 38 39.

Unlike the other trainees, Wen Zhong receives the complete Nine Revolutions Origin Art and Nine Revolutions Mystic Art, as well as a Nine Revolutions Violet-Gold Pill intended to elevate his cultivation further 39 40.

The results of this training elevate Wen Zhong into the Quasi-Sage Realm. Upon returning to Jade Wanderer Palace, Tongtian Sage publicly reveals that he has reached the great perfection of that realm, stunning Golden Spirit Holy Mother, Daoist Duobao, and the other Interception Sect disciples 57.

Jade Wanderer Palace Visit

After Di Xin appoints him Grand Marshal, Wen Zhong agrees to escort Shen Gongbao to Jade Wanderer Palace on Golden Turtle Island. Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal blocks them from entering and insults Wen Zhong, leading Wen Zhong to severely wound him 56 57.

Golden Spirit Holy Mother defends Wen Zhong after learning the truth, while Tongtian Sage commends Wen Zhong’s progress. At Wen Zhong’s request, Golden Spirit Holy Mother accepts Shen Gongbao as a disciple and orders him to assist Wen Zhong in Great Shang 57 58.

Rescue of Shiji Niangniang

Wen Zhong arrives as Taiyi True Person attempts to kill Shiji Niangniang and her disciples for the Investiture of the Gods Tribulation. He challenges Taiyi in the void, counters Taiyi’s magical treasures with his twin whips and Purple-Gold Divine Hammer, and gravely wounds him 59 60.

Taiyi escapes with the Earth-Traveling Golden Light Art. Wen Zhong refrains from pursuing him after Shiji advises caution, and Shiji reports the attempted killing to Tongtian Sage 60.

Sishui Pass Defense

Di Xin dispatches Wen Zhong and his six disciples to Sishui Pass after learning that Jiang Shang’s Great Zhou army is supported by several Quasi-Sage experts. Wen Zhong assumes command of the pass, recalls Huang Feihu to protect Chaoge, and receives an emergency jade talisman from Di Xin 68 70.

When Great Zhou destroys Sishui Pass’s ancient formation with the Formation-Breaking Pearl and eight powerful treasures, Wen Zhong organizes the defense and confronts the enemy army. He refuses to let his disciples face Guangchengzi and only permits Yang Jian to take the challenge after learning of Yang Jian’s extraordinary strength 71 72.

Zhao Gongming and Shen Gongbao arrive to support him during the ensuing battle. Following the clash, Zhao Gongming and Wen Zhong agree to disregard their technical difference in sect seniority and associate as peers 73 75.

Continued War at Sishui Pass

After the first battle, Wen Zhong orders a strategic retreat to preserve Great Shang’s forces, leaves a garrison at Sishui Pass, and has Shen Gongbao seek aid to restore its defenses 76. The Four Sages of Nine Dragons Island, the Ten Heavenly Lords, Yin Jiao, and Yin Hong later arrive to reinforce him, with the Ten Heavenly Lords proposing the Ten Ultimate Formation as a replacement defense 87.

Wen Zhong remains one of the principal Great Shang commanders at Sishui Pass as the conflict escalates and the Interception Sect commits itself fully to supporting Great Shang 101 179. When Jiameng Pass suffers a surprise assault, he sends Yang Jian and the other young powerhouses to aid its defenders while staying behind to confront the Thunder Clan’s experts himself 116.

During the later Sage-level conflict at Sishui Pass, Nuwa Sage attacks Wen Zhong and his allies at Yuanshi Tianzun’s request. They combine their treasures to defend themselves before Di Xiao intervenes from the Chaos Pearl 184.
