Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Active incarnation in Yuji Itadori 50 Takes control of Yuji, overwhelms Hakari with slashes, and deploys Malevolent Shrine against Xuan.
Four-armed combat form and mobile shrine 71 Fights with four arms and multiple chanting mouths; adopts Xuan’s tactic of making his own body the shrine of his Domain.
Restoration of his original body 75 76 Uraume preserves his body through the Flame of Ten Thousand Deaths, allowing him to restart in his original form. Uraume also leaves behind their cursed technique.
Chaos-induced reduction 83 84 Xuan’s Chaos leaves him mouse-sized and triangular, with almost no cursed energy. His consciousness remains in the portion of his soul housed in one finger.
Transfer into Megumi Fushiguro 100 Uses Enchain to possess Yuji, then forces Megumi to swallow ten fingers and his captive body, transferring himself into Megumi.
Suppression of Megumi’s resistance 104 Initially able to use less than one-twentieth of his strength against Megumi’s resistance; exploits Megumi’s guilt over striking Tsumiki to suppress his consciousness.
Ten Shadows access in another timeline 113 116 Arrives in the world of a centuries-old Zenin Xuan with Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique and knowledge of shikigami technique installation; subsequently summons Mahoraga.
500%-output Dismantle 114 Combines Utahime’s amplification, the complete technique sequence, and a binding vow. Permanently relinquishes future boosts from performing that full sequence.
Partial fusion with Satoru Gojo 124 125 Moves from Megumi into Gojo as part of a last-resort plan. The resulting body has four azure eyes, four arms, additional mouths, and four times Gojo’s previous cursed energy.
Dual Domain and shared adaptation 126 Combines Infinite Void’s sure-hit effect with Malevolent Shrine’s slashes. A vow redirects his Mahoraga’s adaptation to Gojo’s Mahoraga rather than to himself.
Access to Xuan’s collected techniques 134 Mahoraga grants Gojo and Sukuna access to Xuan’s techniques, enabling their plan to drain Xuan with Eight Fixed Waters.
Post-battle body transfer 151 Shoko Ieiri and Kenjaku transfer him into another body after Zenin Xuan’s defeat.

Appearance

  • Original form: Four eyes, four arms, and a large abdominal mouth. His restored original body differs noticeably in physique from the four-armed form he used earlier in Sendai 75 76.
  • Yuji incarnation: Pushes Yuji’s hair back into a slicked-back style; can manifest an additional mouth on Yuji’s cheek 50 51.
  • Megumi incarnation: Sukuna’s black markings appear on Megumi’s face after the transfer 100.
  • Gojo fusion: Retains Gojo’s azure eyes while possessing four eyes, four arms, an abdominal mouth, and a small cheek mouth 125.
  • Captive form: A mouse-sized triangular body small enough to be kept in a hamster cage 84.

Personality

Sukuna is arrogant, cruel, and deliberately humiliating toward opponents he considers inferior. He severs Hakari’s hand while demanding that he hurry through his Domain’s gambling sequence, then threatens to cut his neck next. His cruelty also extends to psychological manipulation: he engineers Megumi’s attack on Tsumiki and mocks him afterward to break his resistance 50 104.

He is nevertheless an observant and adaptable fighter. He identifies the offensive limitation of Xuan’s shadow intangibility, adopts the mobile-shrine tactic, and develops combinations of slashes and ice during combat. When direct confrontation becomes untenable, he retreats rather than insisting on a losing fight 51 71 73 76.

Sukuna can acknowledge superior strength without denying his own defeat. Believing he has died in Sendai, he admits that Xuan defeated him without showing his full strength and reflects that being killed by someone stronger is an acceptable end. His composure breaks when Uraume leaves him: he reaches for them repeatedly and orders them not to depart alone 75.

His alliance with Gojo exposes an unfamiliar attachment to companions. He initially claims not to expect encouragement, but smiles when Jujutsu High’s sorcerers pat his back before battle. Later, he remembers Yuji’s encouragement and recognizes that shared goals and trusted companions could lead him down a path resembling Xuan’s 113 121.

Abilities & Skills

Dismantle and Cleave

Sukuna’s principal offensive techniques produce devastating slashes 50 114.

  • Dismantle: Launches slashes at range; incantations and binding vows can greatly increase its output 71 114.
  • Cleave: Used through close-range contact to cut Hakari’s torso and sever Mahoraga’s waist 50 114.
  • Defensive slashes: Covers his body with slashes to intercept weapons and simulate Limitless-like protection 76 83.
  • Technique combinations: Coats Dismantle in ice and combines slashes with shikigami techniques 73 83 116.
  • Technique engraving: Inscribes techniques into a severed arm, then uses it as an explosive delivery medium against Divine Dog 116.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

Malevolent Shrine overlays Sukuna’s innate domain onto real space and attacks with widespread slashes. Its open-barrier configuration trades the ability to seal opponents inside for increased range 5 52.

  • Dismantle and Cleave can dismantle opposing closed Domains; an open Domain is not automatically stronger simply because it lacks a closed barrier 5.
  • Comparable opponents can escape its effective area because it does not imprison them 52.
  • Overlap with Xuan’s open Domain initially disrupts both sure-hit effects; their eventual simultaneous collapse causes technique burnout 50 52.
  • Sukuna later makes his body the shrine and also deploys a closed version when circumstances prevent an open Domain 71 117.
  • In Sendai, he enlarges its range and strengthens its slashes by sacrificing that body’s future ability to expand a Domain 74.

Furnace: Open

Furnace unleashes the Flame of Ten Thousand Deaths, using accumulated dust for an enormous explosion 75 81 83.

  • A colony-wide Malevolent Shrine followed by Furnace incinerates Sendai Colony, including its ground and barrier 75.
  • Without an open-barrier Domain, gathering sufficient dust takes longer 81.
  • Sukuna raises one blast to 200% power by sacrificing the ability of his four hands to use Furnace independently thereafter 83.
  • While fused with Gojo, he combines Furnace with Purple, relinquishing the ability to repeat that fusion 127.

Ice Formation

Sukuna uses ice techniques alongside Uraume and retains access after Uraume leaves their technique behind 70 73 75 83.

  • Creates footholds in midair to redirect his movement 70.
  • Combines freezing effects with slashes, encasing Xuan’s wounds in ice 73.
  • Uses Eight Cold Crystal Prison with a reinforced barrier to trap Xuan long enough to escape 76.

Reverse Cursed Technique

Sukuna regenerates severe injuries rapidly, including lost limbs and half of his destroyed body 51 52 114.

  • Heals Gojo by outputting Reverse Cursed Technique 123.
  • Destroys and reconstructs his own brain to restore a burnt-out technique 74.
  • Recovers his technique after a Domain clash and summons Mahoraga despite taking 0.03 seconds of Infinite Void 116.

Binding Vows and Incarnation

Sukuna uses binding vows to alter control of vessels, technique output, adaptation, and cursed-energy recovery 100 114 126 129.

  • Enchain: A prior agreement requires Yuji to surrender control for one minute when Sukuna speaks the trigger word and to forget making the agreement 100.
  • Soul persistence: His captive triangular body remains conscious because Mahoraga forces one finger back into it before Chaos lands 83 84.
  • Cursed-energy restoration: Restores his and Gojo’s reserves by sacrificing half of his future recovery rate 129.
  • Further sacrifices: Borrows against his technique, Reverse Cursed Technique, and other capabilities to keep supporting Gojo, leaving his body badly compromised 141.

Ten Shadows Technique

Through Megumi’s body, Sukuna gains the Ten Shadows Technique and applies knowledge acquired from earlier battles 113.

  • Summons Mahoraga and uses its Dharma Wheel 116.
  • Incorporates Tiger Funeral, Nue, and Divine Dog into composite attacks 116.
  • Coordinates two Mahoragas during his fusion with Gojo and redirects adaptation between them through a vow 126.
  • Supplies Gojo with Sword of Extermination forms for use as a sword and scabbard 126.

Other Combat Techniques

  • Black Flash: Matches Xuan’s Black Flash in a collision that destroys half of both fighters’ bodies 52.
  • Cursed Technique Reversal: Light: Transforms into light during the Shinjuku Domain clash; later uses Kenjaku-Xuan’s copied Light technique to free Gojo from eye-based control 114 129.
  • Hollow Wicker Basket: Deploys it alongside Gojo’s Simple Domain when Mahoraga opens her Domain 124.
  • Coordinated casting: Uses additional mouths to chant while Gojo fights, supporting Red, Purple, and other combined attacks 126 129 134.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kamutoke — Cursed tool that releases lightning; Sukuna uses it against Mahoraga and carries it into the later fused battle with Gojo 81 125.
  • Hiten — Long-shafted weapon wielded alongside Kamutoke; its shaft carves a trail through the ground as Sukuna stops himself after being knocked back 81 83.
  • Cursed fingers — Objects containing portions of his soul. Kenjaku retains fingers during Sukuna’s imprisonment, and Yorozu supplies ten during the transfer into Megumi 84 98 100.

History

Reputation and the Shibuya Massacre

Sukuna’s reputation as history’s strongest King of Curses makes him the benchmark against which later sorcerers are judged. Xuan, the strongest sorcerer of the Muromachi period, accepts modern incarnation in part to settle persistent comparisons between them 2 29.

Yuji recounts that being force-fed ten fingers while unconscious allowed Sukuna to seize his body during Shibuya, resulting in several thousand deaths. Fearing another takeover, Yuji asks Xuan to kill him if Sukuna possesses him again 30.

First Battle with Xuan

After taking control of Yuji, Sukuna fights Hakari until Xuan intervenes with an open Domain. Their overlapping Domains collapse simultaneously, forcing a close-range battle during technique burnout 50 51 52.

Both recover their techniques, exchange near-fatal slashes, and survive a Black Flash collision. Before their strongest attacks can be released, Yuji regains control. Sukuna insists that the fight is unfinished 52.

Sendai Defeat and Imprisonment

Sukuna later approaches Yuta in Sendai and destroys the Mahoraga Yuta summons against him. Yuta and Ito Mamoru bring Xuan back to the battlefield, beginning a prolonged rematch 64 70.

Despite new Domain tactics, ice combinations, and the destruction of Sendai through Furnace, Sukuna cannot overcome Xuan’s adaptation. Uraume’s sacrifice allows his original body to revive, but Xuan again overwhelms him and forces him to flee 71 73 74 75 76.

His escape brings him into Takaba’s reality-altering comedy technique, followed by battles with Mahoraga and Megumi. Xuan ultimately strikes his brain with Chaos. Sukuna experiences a subjective hundred years of chaos before awakening in a tiny triangular body inside a cage 77 78 80 83 84.

Escape into Megumi

Yorozu takes possession of Sukuna’s cage and offers him unconditional assistance. During her battle with Yuji and Megumi, Sukuna invokes Enchain and uses Yuji’s body to force his fingers and captive body into Megumi 99 100.

Megumi’s resistance initially restricts Sukuna to less than one-twentieth of his strength. Sukuna tricks him into striking Tsumiki, then uses the resulting guilt to suppress him. Xuan intervenes before Sukuna can attack Yuji, and Sukuna subsequently escapes with Kenjaku after a binding vow postpones their confrontation until December 24 104 106.

Alliance Against the Alternate Zenin Xuan

Kenjaku sends Sukuna into another timeline, where Zenin Xuan has survived for nearly six hundred years and defeated Jujutsu High. Sukuna joins Gojo against this Xuan, hoping to discover a means of defeating his original-world opponent 113 123.

Their opening ambush and repeated Domain battles fail to secure victory. Facing defeat, Sukuna arranges to leave Megumi and enter Gojo, creating a partial fusion capable of combining their Domains and techniques 114 124 125 126.

When Xuan returns as an effectively immortal vengeful cursed spirit, Sukuna spends his future recovery and other capabilities to sustain Gojo. He helps devise a cursed-energy depletion plan and later supplies energy for Gojo’s attempt to apply Blue and Red directly to space 129 134 141 144.

After Xuan’s death, Shoko and Kenjaku transfer Sukuna into another body. Sukuna states that he has found Xuan’s weakness; afterward, he decides to visit a beef shop while privately denying that the people there are his reason for going 151 152.

Relationships

  • Zenin Xuan / Gen — Principal rival. Xuan seeks to surpass Sukuna’s historical reputation, repeatedly defeats him, and imprisons him. Sukuna later studies an alternate Xuan to find a weakness he can exploit 2 29 75 84 113 151.
  • Uraume — Longstanding attendant, cook, and combat partner. Their final sacrifice preserves his body and leaves him their technique; Sukuna desperately tries to prevent their departure 73 75.
  • Yuji Itadori — Former vessel and enemy. Sukuna exploits their forgotten Enchain agreement, but later remembers Yuji’s encouragement before the alternate-timeline battle 100 113 121.
  • Megumi Fushiguro — Vessel whose resistance Sukuna breaks through psychological manipulation. In the alternate timeline, they cooperate against Xuan, and Megumi asks Sukuna not to die 104 113 124.
  • Satoru Gojo — Rival turned indispensable ally and temporary vessel. Their partial fusion enables shared Domains, coordinated casting, and combined attacks 113 125 126 144.
  • Kenjaku — Ancient associate and modern ally. Arranges Sukuna’s escape, sends him across timelines, and helps transfer him into a new body after the final battle 75 106 113 151.
  • Yorozu — Devoted admirer who retrieves his cage, supplies his fingers, and helps him possess Megumi 99 100.
  • Fumihiko Takaba — Opponent whose comedy technique temporarily strips Sukuna of his powers and subjects him to bewildering scenarios 77 78.
  • Mahoraga / Little Demon — Repeated adversary whose adaptation counters his attacks. Xuan’s Mahoraga later helps Sukuna and Gojo develop a way to defeat her master 74 83 131 134.
