Background / History

Mahoraga is described as the absolute core of the Ten Shadows Technique. Xuan tamed the shikigami during the Muromachi period, becoming the only sorcerer Tengen recognized as having accomplished the feat. Knowledge of its adaptation was essential to surviving that first confrontation 34 48.

Unlike ordinary innate-technique shikigami, Xuan’s Mahoraga received a separated portion of his soul. Xuan intended both to strengthen Mahoraga and to let the shikigami experience the world independently. This distinction later allowed Mahoraga to act beyond the normal dependence on a summoner’s soul 148.

After Xuan’s incarnation in 2018, his connections to Mahoraga and the other previously tamed shikigami were severed. He had to restore his command of the Ten Shadows through new taming rituals 1 48.

Different Manifestations

Each user’s Ten Shadows shikigami is unique within that person’s soul, regardless of repeated summons or taming status. Consequently, the Mahoragas associated with different users do not share a single continuous identity 69.

Appearance

• Unadapted form: An enormous white humanoid with facial wings, a Dharma Wheel above the head, and an extending Sword of Extermination. The mouth initially lacks a tongue 48 70 82.
• Variable size: Grows to nearly fifty meters tall during Xuan’s taming ritual, becomes still larger, and eventually contracts to a human-sized form 48.
• Xuan’s adapted form: A slender, jade-white, feminine humanoid without conventional eyes. The form is maintained for soul protection, not as an expression of gender 74 83 95.
• Megumi’s human-identity form: Resembles an extremely pale Megumi Fushiguro beneath a receding white shell and wears a Jujutsu High uniform 80.
• Additional limbs: Xuan’s Mahoraga grows two extra arms to restrain Sukuna and later manifests eight arms during the resurrection ritual 83 124.

Personality

Xuan’s Mahoraga combines formal loyalty with a sharp sense of humor. Nue describes Mahoraga as devious, cunning, fond of jokes, and inclined to play with people’s hearts; Xuan agrees. Mahoraga later threatens to turn Nue into spicy roast chicken for speaking badly about her 10 74.

That loyalty is intensely personal. Mahoraga worries that insufficient strength caused Xuan’s defeat, promises to dance with him after battle, and insists that only Mahoraga may judge him. Nevertheless, devotion does not mean unconditional obedience: after discovering the curse consuming his soul, Mahoraga chooses to kill him, accepting that doing so will also require dying 114 120 129 142.

Megumi’s manifestation is theatrical and argumentative, repeatedly revising courtroom testimony to defend him. It also expresses a genuine wish to become human and looks forward to being summoned by Megumi again, despite believing that a future summon will no longer be the same self 67 68 80 82.

Abilities & Skills

Adaptation and Learning

Mahoraga’s wheel develops resistance to attacks and situations, then progresses from enduring an ability to learning a usable response 87 119.

• Adaptation applies to more than direct damage: demonstrated subjects include Domains, time distortion, soul manipulation, combat rhythm, and thinking itself 48 74 83 132.
• Learned responses need not exactly reproduce the original attack. Learning Divine Dog’s slashes produces both “Stitching” and a designated slash 119.
• The wheel continues learning after resistance is complete 119.
• Adaptation speed varies. Boogie Woogie’s “incomprehensibility” requires substantial time, allowing Yuta to repeatedly interrupt Mahoraga’s approach 120.
• Shadow-constructed duplicates are weaker than the original and may be destroyed before they can adapt 45.

Regeneration and Physical Combat

Mahoraga reconstructs damaged flesh while continuing to attack, including after dismemberment or the destruction of most of the body 48 70.

• Regenerates most of a shattered chest in less than 0.1 seconds during the taming battle 48.
• Yuta’s manifestation repeatedly returns from a state reduced to the wheel alone 70.
• Can tear up mountains, wield immense masses of earth, and exchange Black Flashes with Xuan 48 120.
• Megumi’s manifestation strengthens regeneration by adopting a human body and placing its cursed-energy core in the abdomen 83.
• Regeneration is not absolute: sufficiently overwhelming destruction can end a manifestation before it survives or completes adaptation 70 83.

Learned and Recreated Techniques

Mahoraga develops offensive abilities through learning, while Megumi’s manifestation acquires an additional recreation method through Comedian 81 87.

• Target-designated slash: Produces an undetectable slash directly on its target; during Xuan’s ritual, this attack severs his left hand 48.
• Space-cutting slash: A Mahoraga comprehends the principle during special training with Gojo, helping Sukuna understand it as well 114.
• Cursed Speech-like command: Forces Yuta to his knees while simultaneously affecting Rika 120.
• Mental-image recreation: Megumi’s Mahoraga recreates Gojo from Yuta’s memories and uses Blue, Red, and eventually Hollow Purple. The resulting damage is influenced by Yuta’s understanding 81.
• Technique library: Mahoraga’s support gives Gojo access to hundreds upon thousands of adapted techniques, including Blood Manipulation and Projection Sorcery 136.

Shared Adaptation and Possession

Mahoraga’s power can be applied through a summoner or another shikigami rather than requiring Mahoraga to fight separately 34 116.

• A contract leaves a Dharma Wheel mark on the user, granting acquired resistances and further adaptation 34.
• Xuan’s protective mark prevents ordinary damage and decay to his original corpse 34.
• Mahoraga and the user’s wheel adapt independently; resistance belonging to one should not automatically be assumed for the other 114.
• Xuan’s Mahoraga can possess him and other shikigami. Divine Dog Totality receives both adapted attacks and Mahoraga’s characteristic equipment through this method 116.
• At the documented threefold cursed-energy cost for partial manifestation, Xuan can obtain 90% damage immunity and use previously learned techniques 116.

Soul Manipulation and Innate Domains

Learning Idle Transfiguration gives Xuan’s Mahoraga direct access to the relationship between body and soul 84 134.

• Alters flesh to match the soul, including reshaping Sukuna’s body into a triangle 84.
• Can adapt thinking and enter another person’s Innate Domain 132.
• Identifies that the curses sustaining Xuan’s vengeful-spirit condition must be addressed within the spirit itself 132.

Resurrection Ritual

Mahoraga performs the Ten Sacred Treasures ritual within Little Demon’s Domain, gathering the treasures and the other shikigami through a dance and the Buru Mantra 124.

• Revives Xuan and restores him to peak condition 124.
• Depends on gathering all ten treasures 124.
• Xuan prepares for the ritual by arranging for his shikigami to escape his body and sever their connections when he dies 124.

Limitations

• Adaptation does not erase an opponent’s self-enhancement. Resistance to Blue and Red does not remove Gojo’s movement benefits; similarly, it cannot negate the advantages Comedian grants Takaba himself 124.
• Linked powers can be exploited. Kenjaku’s Mahoraga adapts to Mahoraga’s Mark and consumes its protection 86.
• Independent existence has a vulnerable foundation. Xuan can reclaim the soul fragment inside his Mahoraga, progressively stripping away the ability to resist him 148.
• Adaptation can be diverted. Yuji later floods Xuan’s body with an invading technique that the inherited adaptive power prioritizes, preventing adaptation to Yuji himself 149.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

• Sword of Extermination — Extends from Mahoraga’s arm. It can be filled with positive energy to improve durability, sharpness, and attack power; Mahoraga also uses positive-energy-coated debris to burn and batter Rika 48 110 120.
• Dharma Wheel — The rotating mechanism associated with adaptation and learning. It can appear above a user or possessed shikigami, rather than only above Mahoraga 51 87 116.
• Ten Sacred Treasures — Ritual implements manifested during Xuan’s resurrection, including jewels, sacred mirrors, fur paintings, and the Eight-Grasp Longsword bound by the wheel 124.

Relationships

• Zenin Xuan / Gen — Master and source of Mahoraga’s independent soul fragment. Their bond ultimately places Mahoraga between protecting him and ending his cursed existence 114 142 148.
• Megumi Fushiguro — His manifestation serves as his lawyer despite remaining untamed. Xuan notes that it will not harm Megumi, although Megumi cannot borrow its abilities normally 67 80.
• Satoru Gojo — Initially an opponent in Xuan’s sparring match; later trusts Mahoraga’s plan and uses adapted techniques against the immortal Xuan 95 132 136.
• Ryomen Sukuna — Repeated opponent of several manifestations and eventual participant in the plan against Xuan. Mahoraga cuts their connection when Xuan’s curse threatens to spread 70 81 132 142.

Xuan’s Modern Taming Ritual

• Xuan summons Mahoraga inside Undercurrent: Eight Fixed Waters, exposing the shikigami to slashes, Chaos, and close-range attacks while Piercing Ox accelerates elsewhere 48.
• Mahoraga’s escalating adaptations force Xuan into a brutal exchange of regeneration and Black Flashes 48.
• Xuan completes the ritual with Max Elephant’s compressed water jet and Piercing Ox accelerated to approximately Mach 3,000 48.

The Migrators and Megumi’s Trial

• Photographs of Mahoraga fighting Sukuna become evidence in Higuruma’s prosecution of Megumi over the Shibuya deaths 65.
• Megumi’s Mahoraga attempts to shift responsibility to Haruta Shigemo, presenting distorted footage and repeatedly revising the account when challenged 68.
• In Sendai, Yuta summons a separate Mahoraga by permanently relinquishing Ten Shadows. Sukuna destroys it despite its rapid adaptation and regeneration 70.

Comedian and the Battle with Sukuna

Defense of Xuan and Resurrection

• During Deadly Sentencing, Mahoraga blocks Yuta’s execution attempt and fights Yuta and Rika while Xuan engages Kenjaku 120.
• After Xuan is killed, Mahoraga carries out the prepared Ten Sacred Treasures ritual and brings him back 124.

The Vengeful Cursed Spirit

• After Xuan becomes an effectively immortal vengeful cursed spirit, Mahoraga works with Gojo and Sukuna to find a way to remove his curses 129 132 134.
• Contact with Xuan’s soul reveals a curse capable of spreading through Mahoraga. To protect the others, Mahoraga severs their connections and allows Xuan’s cursed energy to swallow her 142.
• Xuan progressively consumes the soul fragment sustaining Mahoraga’s independence. By the time Yuji enters the battle, Xuan has devoured the remainder, ending Mahoraga’s ability to weaken him from within 148.
