Background / History

Yuji’s sorcerous abilities awaken after he swallows one of Sukuna’s fingers. While Sukuna resides in him, the still-unawakened Malevolent Shrine technique becomes engraved into his body. Kenjaku later calls Yuji the child he created and expresses surprise at how quickly that child has disrupted his plans 100 111.

During the Shibuya Incident, Yuji is force-fed ten fingers while unconscious. Sukuna takes control of his body and kills several thousand people. Yuji subsequently treats the massacre as his own responsibility, despite having been unconscious during the possession 30.

Appearance

• Pink hair: Shared with his father and grandfather. Xuan jokingly uses the resemblance to Sukuna to suggest a family connection 85.
• Late-battle appearance: The Yuji who confronts Zenin Xuan wears a white shirt and black pants and has amber eyes. Bloody lines open near his eyes, resembling Sukuna’s former facial markings 148 149.
• Departure clothing: Appears in a white hoodie when he silently bids Gojo farewell after restoring the city 151.

Personality

Yuji strongly rejects treating human lives as expendable. When Kogane explains that ordinary people are worth points in the Culling Game, he angrily challenges the rule rather than accepting its logic. His anger is mixed with self-reproach over his failures during Shibuya 13.

His guilt can become self-sacrificial. After explaining Sukuna’s massacre, he asks Xuan to kill him if Sukuna takes over again. He nevertheless remains protective of others, fighting to recover both Megumi and Tsumiki rather than simply defeating their possessors 30 101 103.

Yuji’s compassion does not mean unconditional mercy. He admits that he has wondered whether even Cursed Spirits suffer when they die, but tells Yorozu that pity will not stop him from killing Cursed Spirits or sparing no evil person. His own fighting spirit can weaken the pacifying effect of Universal Salvation 102.

Outside combat, he is encouraging and playful. He urges Megumi to accept Xuan’s instruction, openly calls Choso his big brother, and breaks the tension before the final battle by asking Gojo to lower his technique so everyone can pat him on the shoulder 31 32 113.

Physical Strength and Close-Quarters Combat

Yuji combines extraordinary physical strength with Cursed Energy reinforcement.

• Overwhelms the Iron Soldier with rapid punches, approaching six strikes per second 44.

Cursed Energy Control

Gojo provides Yuji’s initial control training, while Xuan teaches more precise shaping and combat applications 35 80.

• Retains the energy generated by intense anger without allowing it to leak away during the fight to save Megumi 101.

Yuji combines Reverse Cursed Technique with Blood Manipulation for rapid self-recovery 103.

• Instantly heals the wound left by a javelin through his waist 103.
• Initially struggles to output healing effectively into Tsumiki, requiring Round Deer’s intervention 104 105.

Yuji can perceive the outlines of souls within incarnated sorcerers.

Yuji’s incomplete domain, Universal Salvation, lacks an imbued sure-hit technique. It instead has unusual functionality tied to his kindness and the malleability of his innate domain 100 102.

• Pacification: Greatly weakens an opponent’s will to fight. Yuji’s own aggression can reduce this effect 102.

Sukuna’s Vessel

Yuji’s body can imprison Sukuna, and he can regain control after Sukuna takes over 52 54.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shibuya Aftermath and Execution Order

Yuji and Choso clear Cursed Spirits from Shibuya while learning the Culling Game’s rules. Yuji reacts with outrage to its point system and remains consumed by what he believes he should have prevented during Shibuya 13.

Naoya confronts them over Yuji’s death sentence, while Yuta pursues Yuji as the appointed executioner. Yuta later explains that the execution was an act carried out under a Binding Vow, undertaken after Gojo asked him to look after Yuji 24 28.

When Xuan arrives seeking Sukuna, Yuji accepts his involvement on the condition that Xuan kill him if another possession occurs 29 30.

Training and Hakari’s Tournament

Yuji improves his Cursed Energy shaping under Xuan and enters the underground tournament, defeating the Iron Soldier while testing his new control 35 44.

He and Megumi then fight Hakari. Yuji’s Black Flashes inflict serious injuries, but Hakari’s jackpot reverses the damage and overwhelms him. After Megumi also falls, Sukuna takes over Yuji’s body and fights Hakari before Xuan intervenes; Yuji eventually regains control 47 50 52.

Searching for Higuruma

Separated from Megumi and unable to contact his allies, Yuji follows Cursed Energy residuals to Reggie’s apartment building. Reggie demands a fight before taking him to Higuruma, and Yuji overpowers his recreated weapons, vehicles, and house 56 57.

Yuji later appears as a witness in Higuruma’s trial concerning the Shibuya massacre and Haruta Shigemo’s death 68 69.

Yorozu and the Fushiguro Siblings

Yuji helps evacuate Tsumiki, only for her to reveal herself as Yorozu. When Megumi loses the will to fight, Yuji expands Universal Salvation against her 99 100.

Sukuna invokes Enchain and uses Yuji’s body to transfer himself into Megumi. Yuji continues fighting Yorozu, using Blood Manipulation and repeated soul-shaking Black Flashes until Tsumiki regains control 100 101 103 104.

Tsumiki is then pierced through during Sukuna’s struggle with Megumi. Yuji attempts to save her with Blood Manipulation and inefficient external healing until Round Deer intervenes. He entrusts Megumi’s rescue to Gen 104 105.

December 24 Battle

The later battle takes place in a world accessed through Kenjaku’s technique, where Zenin Xuan has survived for nearly six hundred years. Yuji helps rally both Gojo and Sukuna before they confront him 113.

Initially supporting the rear line, Yuji assists Shoko with Yuta’s injuries. He and the recovered Megumi later prepare to enter when Yuta no longer has enough Cursed Energy to continue 128 137.

Final Intervention and Restoration

A white-clad Yuji intervenes with power far beyond his earlier level, striking Zenin Xuan with Black Flash and Dismantle. He asks Gojo not to investigate his origins, warning that doing so would mean seeing him again in sixty-eight years 148 149.

He overwhelms Xuan with Blood Tide and traps him in Compassionate Ferry for Universal Salvation. After Xuan’s death, Yuji uses Rika and a copied technique to restore the devastated city and lost lives, then silently tells Gojo he is leaving and disappears. Another Yuji remains present afterward 149 151.
