Background and History

Origins and the Zenin Clan

Xuan retains memories of a life before becoming a Muromachi-period sorcerer, including reading Jujutsu Kaisen. His remembered knowledge extends through Yuta Okkotsu’s Sendai battles, but not beyond them 1.

His mother was expelled from the Zenin Clan and died because of the clan when he was approximately three. Although he inherited Ten Shadows, he grew up outside the recognized household. By the time he possessed enough strength to claim authority, he no longer wanted the clan-head position 9 31.

During the Muromachi period, approximately three hundred sorcerers hunted him after he was accused of killing the Star Plasma Vessel. The attackers included members of all Three Great Clans. Cornered by the Gojo and Kamo clan heads, Xuan revealed Mahoraga’s wheel and deployed six powerful shikigami; the final thirty opponents of at least Grade 1 strength died within roughly three minutes 11.

The accusation was false: Dhruv later told him that the Zenin clan head had killed the vessel out of hostility toward the Gojo clan head. After defeating his remaining challengers, Xuan withdrew into the mountains and accepted Kenjaku’s offer of incarnation so that he could eventually fight Sukuna. Kenjaku subsequently announced that the strongest sorcerer had taken his own life 2 11.

Incarnation and the Culling Game

Xuan awakened in a Sendai morgue at noon on November 1, 2018. His vessel had already died before incarnation; Angel later confirmed that he had not displaced its original soul 1 85.

He challenged Sendai’s powerful players while rebuilding his shikigami roster. Rather than kill every defeated opponent, he spared Ryu Ishigori and Uro Takako, sought information about Sukuna, and negotiated with Dhruv to stop his indiscriminate domain attacks until civilians could be removed from the colony 5 10 11 12.

After fighting Kashimo, Takaba, and Higuruma, he approached Itadori’s group to request a battle with Sukuna. When Itadori refused to surrender his body, Xuan accepted the decision and made a Binding Vow separating his cooperation with the group from his agreement with Kenjaku 15 21 28 29 30.

He subsequently trained the younger sorcerers, helped coordinate their Culling Game response, and supported changes to the game’s rules. His plans included civilian evacuation, shadow-based communications, and rescuing Masamichi Yaga 31 41 64.

Return to the Zenin Clan

Xuan accompanied Maki to the clan estate and lent her Caduceus. He distinguished the present clan from the people who had harmed him centuries earlier, supported Maki becoming clan head, and healed Naobito’s burns and missing hand 35 37 40.

His attempt to overturn the clan’s inherited privileges met violent resistance. He defeated the attackers in less than ten seconds, removed Jinichi’s arm, and used a 0.2-second Domain Expansion against those who continued moving after his warning 40.

Kenjaku and the Stolen Body

Kenjaku recovered Xuan’s intact original corpse from the Kamo Clan’s Cursed Storage. Even after death, the body retained Mahoraga’s adaptive restoration and resisted Idle Transfiguration before Kenjaku completed his takeover 41.

When they confronted each other, Xuan was unsurprised to see Kenjaku wearing his former body. He exploited Kenjaku’s difficulty handling its heightened senses and unfamiliar fighting rhythm, pursuing him back to the Tombs of the Star Corridor. Their battle culminated in both expanding the same domain 86 87.

Later Battle Depictions

The later battle sequence explicitly identifies its Zenin Xuan and Satoru Gojo as products of Kenjaku’s technique. These scenes should not be read as an uncomplicated account of the modern incarnated Xuan’s fate 123.

Within that sequence, Xuan’s altered shadow technique develops into Mimic Shadow, and he is depicted as a Special Grade Vengeful Cursed Spirit whose soul remains buried beneath a curse. The curse is tied to the Zenin Clan’s rejection, historical erasure, and accusations that he was an impostor and tyrant 130 134 138 142.

Mahoraga discovers that the corruption can spread through soul connections. She severs her links to Gojo and Sukuna, then allows Xuan’s cursed energy to consume her so that she can adapt to him and kill him, accepting that she would have to die as well. Xuan later faces Itadori, whose domain prevents him from forming his own domain or drawing on cursed energy 142 149.

Appearance

• Build: Lean and muscular; his incarnated body changes from its original condition as he awakens 1 2.

• Clothing: Initially takes clothing belonging to his vessel from the morgue; later wears a beret 1 109.
• Technique manifestations: Nue’s wings can emerge from his back, hardened shadows can cover his body, and Mahoraga’s golden dharma wheel can appear above his head 3 10 87.

Personality

Xuan is driven by the desire to encounter worthy opponents. He regards an undefeated life without meaningful victories as a failure and accepts incarnation specifically to challenge Sukuna. His earlier wish to live forever is likewise connected to witnessing and fighting powerful people 2 10 142.

His confidence often takes the form of teasing, provocation, and elaborate jokes. He mocks opponents’ appearances, exchanges comedy routines with Takaba, and deliberately irritates Gojo by repeating his students’ criticisms of his teaching 1 13 78 90.

His concern for civilians coexists with considerable ruthlessness. He spares opponents he finds worthwhile, warns Uro against attacking ordinary people, and persuades Dhruv to suspend dangerous techniques. He also kills hostile players and violently suppresses the Zenin elders who resist him 10 11 20 40.

Sukuna identifies arrogance as his central weakness: Xuan commits to crushing an opponent rather than retreating or accounting for lethal combinations. Xuan does prepare safeguards, particularly against Kenjaku, but generally trusts his strength to overcome ominous premonitions 87 110 152.

Food is one of his strongest everyday interests. Although he can live without eating, he enjoys meals enough to accept a year’s worth as payment and judges potential places to live by the food nearby 10 41 109.

Abilities and Skills

Ten Shadows Technique

Xuan treats shadows—not merely the ten summoned creatures—as the foundation of Ten Shadows. His distinctive fighting style incorporates shikigami abilities directly into his body and weapons 3 5 16.

• Partial manifestation: Projects shikigami parts or covers himself with their forms to use their techniques without a full summon 3 5.
• Shadow manipulation: Creates armor, curtains, weapons, bindings, and solid footholds in midair 3 16.
• Storage and travel: Stores objects in shadows and moves between shadowed locations 1 85.
• Repeated attacks: Maintaining a hand sign while repeating an incantation allows consecutive manifestations, demonstrated with ten Divine Dog slashes 45.
• External reserves: Uses shikigami as additional cursed-energy vessels; an early explanation places this increase at nearly twice his own reserves, not an infinite supply 15.

Mahoraga’s Adaptation and Learning

Xuan borrows Mahoraga’s wheel to resist techniques and develop counters 71 87.

Domain Expansion: Undercurrent—Eight Fixed Waters

Also rendered as Dark Surge Eight Settled Waters, Xuan’s domain uses his body as its shrine and releases a mobile sea of shadows 5 52.

Xuan applies lapse and reversal to the shadow foundation of Ten Shadows 16.

• Light: Literally transforms him into light, enabling rapid movement and preventing physical objects from affecting him 4.
• While transformed into light, Xuan cannot directly damage a target, though his Divine Dogs can still attack 4.

Mythical Beast Chimera and Cursed-Spirit Regeneration
