Background / History

Gohan is Goku and Chi-Chi's son. As a child, he is timid and sheltered; Chi-Chi initially wants him to focus solely on becoming a scholar. Ye Bai argues that Gohan needs enough strength to protect himself and eventually gains permission to train him. Ye Bai first attempts wilderness survival training, but relents when Gohan cries and instead teaches him basic stances in a Gravity Chamber set to twice Earth’s gravity. After a month, Gohan’s potential begins to awaken. 21 23 24

Goku and Piccolo later train him together. While training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Gohan struggles to access the anger needed for Super Saiyan, eventually transforming by imagining Piccolo’s death. Goku continues pushing him through dangerous training until he can transform successfully and work toward controlling the form. 33 47 50 52

During the Cell Games, Goku entrusts Cell’s defeat to Gohan because of his hidden power. Gohan initially refuses to fight aggressively and is badly beaten, explaining that he dislikes meaningless battles and does not want to kill even villains. Ye Bai finally draws out his rage by making him imagine Cell murdering his family and friends, leading to Gohan’s Super Saiyan 2 awakening. He overwhelms Cell but delays the finishing blow, allowing Cell to attempt self-destruction; Ye Bai ultimately saves Earth and destroys Cell. 56 60

Gohan remains committed to both study and training. He becomes the costumed Great Saiyaman, trains Goten in martial arts and Flight, and teaches Videl ki control and Flight after she discovers his identity. 62 76

When Majin Buu awakens, Gohan works with Supreme Kai Shin and Kibito, defeats Dabura, and battles Buu. He reaches Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan 4, defeats Fat Buu and Evil Buu, then chooses to spare Fat Buu after learning of the Grand Supreme Kai’s residual divine soul and aura within him. 78 80
