History

Saiyan Invasion

Vegeta arrived on Earth with Nappa to locate Son Goku and the Dragon Balls. He immediately treated the Earthlings as inferior opponents, ordered Nappa to kill the other fighters, and intended to personally deal with Li Wei. 3

His confidence collapsed when Cultivator No. 2's red form overpowered his attacks, including Prince Warfare and the Galick Gun. Vegeta transformed into a Great Ape to continue the battle, but Nexus defeated him and cut off his tail. 5

After being humiliated again by Cultivator No. 2, Vegeta abandoned Nappa and fled Earth, swearing revenge. 6

Namek and Recruitment

Vegeta recovered on Frieza Planet 79 and deliberately injured himself again before receiving treatment, sensing a substantial increase in strength afterward. He then departed for Namek to pursue the Dragon Balls before Frieza could claim them. 8

On Namek, he discovered that Nappa had surpassed him after the Grand Elder unlocked Nappa's potential. Nappa defeated and humiliated him, while Li Wei stopped Vegeta's subsequent sneak attack. 16 17

Li Wei offered Vegeta employment as the head bodyguard of his company, but Vegeta initially refused. After witnessing Goku's greatly increased strength against Frieza, he yielded to Li Wei and agreed to work for him in exchange for training. 17 18 19

Pursuit of Super Saiyan Power

Vegeta trained relentlessly in Bulma's gravity chamber, driven by envy of Goku's Super Saiyan form and determination to surpass him. Despite reaching a battle power beyond three million, he initially failed to transform because his anger and state of mind were insufficient. 24 28

Cumber defeated him despite his Super Saiyan transformation, forcing Vegeta to confront the gap between his pride and his actual strength. He subsequently asked Li Wei for stricter training and received Nexus's light in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. 32

Following this training, Vegeta fought Goku for an entire day in their Super Saiyan God: Blue Youth Forms. Goku narrowly won, with Li Wei judging their odds at roughly six-to-four in Goku's favor. 33

Later Battles

Vegeta challenged Broly to settle the resentment connected to King Vegeta's treatment of Broly. He entered the fight arrogantly, was brutally beaten nearly to death, and had to be saved by Goku and restored with a Senzu Bean. 23 24

After Cell arrived from another timeline, Vegeta repeatedly used him as a punching bag for seven years. Li Wei's Time Corridor prevented Cell from dying permanently, allowing Vegeta and Trunks to continue reviving and beating him. 43

Vegeta later fought Cell as a Super Saiyan God: Blue within the Meta Field. 48

When Black Frieza defeated Trunks, Vegeta intervened in Super Saiyan 4 Deep Blue form. Frieza quickly defeated him as well. 70

Personality

Vegeta is intensely proud of his royal status and repeatedly identifies himself as the Saiyan prince. He initially dismisses opponents such as Li Wei, Broly, Cumber, and even Nappa, only to react with fury when they prove stronger than him. 3 16 23 32

His central motivation is rivalry, particularly with Goku. Vegeta continually seeks stronger opponents and harsher training, refusing to accept Goku's lead even after repeated defeats. 18 32 33

Though he can be cruel—most notably during his years of tormenting Cell—his outlook gradually improves under Li Wei's guidance. Li Wei eventually judges that most of Vegeta's heart has become clear enough for him to be considered a good person. 43 32

Abilities & Skills

Saiyan Transformations

Vegeta possesses several Saiyan transformations acquired through combat, training, and Nexus's light.

  • Great Ape — Used during the Earth invasion after Cultivator No. 2 defeated him; he lost access to the form when Nexus severed his tail. 5
  • Super Saiyan — Achieved before his battle with Cumber, though it was insufficient to defeat him. 32
  • Super Saiyan God: Blue Youth Form — Matched Goku's corresponding form closely enough to fight for an entire day. 33
  • Super Saiyan God: Blue — Used in his fight against Cell. 48
  • Super Saiyan 4 Deep Blue — Used against Black Frieza after Trunks was knocked unconscious. 70

Ki Combat

Vegeta is a highly aggressive ki-based fighter whose attacks favor sustained pressure and decisive finishing beams.

  • Prince Warfare — Fires a barrage of rapid ki blasts; he used it against Cultivator No. 2 and Nappa. 5 17
  • Galick Gun — His signature concentrated energy beam, used against Cultivator No. 2 and prepared against Nappa. 5 17
  • Ki Blasts — Uses projectile attacks to open battles and pressure opponents, including Broly and Cumber. 23 32

Spatial Techniques

  • Instant Transmission — Learned alongside Goku, Trunks, and others during the years before Majin Buu's return. 46
  • Meta Field — Demonstrated the ability to deploy the Meta Field during his fight with Cell. 48

Relationships

  • Li Wei — Employer, mentor, and the person who forced Vegeta to acknowledge his weakness. Li Wei recruited him, instructed him in gravity-chamber training, and later bestowed Nexus's light on him. 19 32
  • Son Goku — Primary rival. Vegeta is driven to surpass Goku, while Goku welcomes their increasingly even battles. 24 32 33
  • Nappa — Former subordinate. Nappa's growth reversed their old power dynamic, allowing him to defeat and humiliate Vegeta on Namek. 16 17
  • Bulma — His partner and later wife; Vegeta resumed a relationship with her after settling on Earth. 27 65
  • Trunks — His son. Vegeta recognizes the familiar Saiyan aura of the time-traveling Trunks and later fights beside him against Frieza. 34 65 70
  • Broly — Fellow Saiyan and opponent whose power exposed Vegeta's limits. Broly nearly killed Vegeta during their Meta Field match. 23
  • Cumber — Rival Saiyan who defeated Vegeta and became a major incentive for his subsequent training. 31 32
  • Cell — A time-traveling enemy whom Vegeta repeatedly tortured for seven years before later accepting a formal fight against him. 43 48
  • Frieza — Former superior and recurring adversary. Vegeta is angered by Frieza's continued growth and is defeated by Black Frieza. 17 67 70
