Background
The Uchiha are descendants of the Sage of Six Paths through Indra’s lineage. Their inherited ocular power is rooted in Yin Release, while their descendants retain differing proportions of the Sage’s physical and spiritual power. 1 17
The clan and the Senju of the Forest jointly founded Konohagakure through the alliance of Uchiha Madara and Senju Hashirama. Madara served as clan head during the Warring States era and preserved techniques he analyzed—including Senju Hashirama’s Wood Release—in the Uchiha archives for later generations. 15 351
Following Madara’s departure, the clan’s relationship with the Hokage Building deteriorated. Senju Tobirama placed the Uchiha in control of the Police Force, granting substantial commercial privileges while restricting their political reach. The arrangement supported the clan’s estate and economy but also isolated it from other Konoha clans. 61 179
Under Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Shingen, the clan gradually expands its alliances, opens Police Force authority, develops new economic channels, and participates more directly in village affairs. 100 102 194
Organization and Society
Leadership
The clan is led by a clan head rather than an untouchable elder hierarchy. Ordinary members may attend meetings, and a leader who abuses their position can be openly criticized by the rest of the clan. 19
- Uchiha Madara — Former clan head whose legacy remains central to the clan’s archives, history, and political identity. 15 337
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head during the main storyline; later confirms Shingen as his designated successor. 181
- Uchiha Shingen — Fugaku’s successor and the clan’s leading reformer, responsible for major military, political, and cultivation changes. 181 311
Compound and Training Grounds
The Uchiha Compound occupies Konoha’s southern district and is designed as a fortified “city within a city.” Its walls bear the fan crest, its flags display three tomoe, and its layout openly asserts Uchiha territorial identity. 462
The clan’s training grounds include large multifunctional buildings and a simulated battlefield built to accommodate simultaneous training by the entire Police Force. 179
Archives
The Uchiha maintain one of the ninja world’s most extensive and detailed ninjutsu libraries. Their tradition is to record analyzed techniques in writing because understanding a jutsu through the Sharingan does not guarantee that a user can perform it. 15
- The library has been rebuilt after repeated destruction during the Warring States era. 15
- Its collection includes Fire Release, Water Release, genjutsu, shuriken techniques, and records of Senju Hashirama’s Wood Release. 15
- Madara personally added analysis and possible applications for Hashirama’s techniques for future Uchiha generations. 15
Economy
The Police Force provides the clan with authority, trade access, and stable income. Their business network includes explosive tags, lending, and the sale of ninja tools through Konoha’s allied trade channels. 102 179
Ninja cats manufacture specialized wire, kunai, and shuriken for the clan’s black-market arms trade, supporting the Uchiha combination of Fire Release and Manipulated Shuriken Technique. 208
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan’s hereditary dōjutsu and the foundation of its combat system. Uchiha are born with ocular power, a chakra formed from Yin Release; awakening and evolving the Sharingan increases the amount of power they can employ. 17
- Awakening the Sharingan causes an Uchiha’s chakra reserves to increase; each evolution reportedly at least doubles their chakra. 42
- A three-tomoe Sharingan user can possess chakra reserves comparable to an Uzumaki of similar level, though the Uchiha generally do not cultivate physical energy as actively. 42
- The Sharingan can perceive chakra flow, volume, and nature transformation, enabling the analysis and copying of many techniques. 11 15
- Copying has practical limits: an Uchiha may understand a technique without having the chakra nature, body, or conditions needed to use it. 15 391
- Most clan members never awaken the Sharingan and are otherwise indistinguishable from ordinary shinobi. 35
Genjutsu
The clan specializes in Yin Release-based genjutsu. Once an Uchiha awakens the Sharingan, genjutsu becomes a standard part of their combat repertoire. 397 534
- Sharingan genjutsu can directly overwhelm a target’s will through eye contact. 32
- Powerful Sharingan genjutsu can control Tailed Beasts; this ability is especially associated with Mangekyō users. 32 516
- The clan developed methods for separating and retrieving spiritual power before the invention of the Shadow Clone Technique. 397
- The Senju’s Bringer-of-Darkness Technique is one of the few genjutsu specifically noted as effective against Sharingan perception. 375
Fire Release and Shurikenjutsu
Fire Release, Manipulated Shuriken Technique, and genjutsu are the clan’s best-known disciplines. 311
- Fire Release: Dragon Flame Technique is a signature Uchiha technique capable of melting stone at sufficient strength. 208
- Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Fire is a basic Uchiha Fire Release that launches repeatedly guided fireballs and may incorporate shuriken. 523
- Ninja tools and wire allow the clan to coordinate Fire Release with controlled shuriken trajectories. 208
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō Sharingan manifests when spiritual energy reaches its limit and resonates with physical energy. Its unique ocular techniques reflect the user’s heart and desires. 17 94
- Mangekyō techniques vary between users and can include genjutsu, spatial techniques, and chakra shaping. 80 514
- Repeated use causes blindness; Susanoo consumes ocular power particularly quickly. 149
- The clan understands the principle of the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan as a reaction between the ocular powers of two Mangekyō eyes, commonly involving siblings. 376 435
Three Great Forbidden Techniques
The Uchiha’s three major forbidden ocular techniques are Susanoo, Izanagi, and Izanami. 149 536
- Susanoo — A chakra avatar and ninjutsu amplifier regarded as the symbol of Uchiha power. Complete Body Susanoo can form hand seals and cast the user’s ninjutsu. 21 143
- Izanagi — A genjutsu classified among the clan’s forbidden techniques; its use carries a blinding cost. 536
- Izanami — A second forbidden genjutsu that likewise carries severe ocular consequences. 536
Three Sacred Tools
The Three Sacred Tools are Mangekyō-level techniques developed to maximize Susanoo’s offensive and defensive potential. They are traditionally passed through the clan head. 180 181
- Totsuka Blade — Susanoo’s close-range weapon. 180
- Yata Mirror — A defensive technique modeled after Uchiha Reflection and the Uchiha gunbai. 180 181
- Yasaka Magatama — A mid-to-long-range attack modeled after the Tailed Beast Ball and enhanced through shuriken-based chakra control. 180 181
Relationships
- Konohagakure — Founding village and primary affiliation. The clan’s authority over the Police Force created long-standing political isolation, though relations improve under Fugaku and Shingen. 61 194
- Senju of the Forest — Co-founders of Konoha and historic rivals. The clans’ opposing traditions of Yin Release and Yang Release shaped much of their conflict. 1 351
- Hyuga Clan — Fellow dōjutsu clan and later ally. The Hyuga, Aburame, and Inuzuka are counted among the Uchiha’s closest clan allies. 181 237
- Fire Daimyo’s family — An ancient allied noble house that has assisted Uchiha activity outside Konoha. 479
- Orochimaru — Technological and research partner. He exchanges Cursed Seal technology with the clan for research materials and funding. 238 261
- Uchiha Obito — Former clansman whose attacks and use of the Mangekyō Sharingan create a major political burden for the clan. The clan seeks to reclaim both of his eyes as bloodline assets. 136 361 408
- Hatake Kakashi — Holder of Obito’s transplanted Mangekyō Sharingan. The clan demands its return while offering compensation. 408 424
Story Role / Major Arcs
Political Isolation and the Police Force
The Uchiha are regarded by Danzō as a potential threat to Hokage authority due to their ambition, unity, and history of challenging the Hokage Building. 27 They are excluded from the sensitive arrangements surrounding Kushina Uzumaki’s childbirth, reinforcing their distrust of the village administration. 38
Reform and Succession
After relations with Konoha begin to improve, the clan opens Police Force authority and becomes more involved in village politics. Fugaku reveals his Mangekyō Sharingan and confirms Shingen as successor before other clan heads, while also agreeing to serve as the Hokage’s advisor. 100 181
Rinnegan and Cultivation Debate
Shingen’s Rinnegan forces the clan to reconsider its traditional cultivation path. Fugaku proposes adopting Shingen’s method rather than relying exclusively on the emotion-driven, Yin Release-focused route developed during the Warring States era. 311
Defense of the Clan Compound
During the invasion of Konoha, Fugaku and Shisui use Susanoo to defend against Kirigakure forces. The clan later withstands an assault by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, with Shingen and the reincarnated Madara protecting the compound. 332 337 339
Obito’s Eyes
Fugaku treats Obito’s Sharingan as compensation owed to the clan for his betrayal. The Uchiha formally demand the return of Kakashi’s Mangekyō Sharingan, arguing that it is an irreplaceable clan bloodline asset. 361 406 408
Madara’s Return
Madara’s return causes a major upheaval within the compound. The younger generation largely reveres him, and he eventually recognizes that the clan has changed from the one he abandoned. 337 340 360 Despite this, Madara views the clan primarily as a potential instrument for his Eye of the Moon Plan. 427
Trivia
- The clan’s fan crest is prominently displayed on the compound walls, while its banners carry the three-tomoe Sharingan pattern. 462
- The Uchiha have a matchmaking corner, and the clan strongly prefers Sharingan users to marry within the clan to preserve the bloodline. 18
- Unlike the Hyuga, the Uchiha are relatively casual within their own territory despite outsiders’ assumptions that they are obsessed with formality. 10
- The clan preserves the Sharingan of deceased members in a dedicated storage area. 425
