Background

Tang San was a prodigious hidden-weapon user in the Peerless Tang Sect’s menial compound and had already become an outer sect disciple while Ao Yin remained a menial. Seeking the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, Tang San used his self-made Flying God Claw to restrain Ao Yin, killed him with a sleeve arrow, recovered the book, and destroyed the body to erase evidence. 1

In Holy Soul Village, Tang San was rebuked by Village Chief Jack after using a concealed stone strike against Ao Yin during a dispute over a bamboo dragonfly. Ao Yin’s inherited memories identify the strike as fatal. 1 Tang San later faced Ao Yin again at the martial soul awakening ceremony, where he concealed his second martial soul and revealed only Blue Silver Grass. 2 3

His innate Rank Nine Soul Power made him a top-tier prodigy despite Blue Silver Grass being dismissed as a useless martial soul. 3 Ao Yin defeated him in a fight for Holy Soul Village’s work-study student position, leaving Tang San injured and humiliated. 5 6 Tang Hao subsequently supported Tang San’s goal of becoming a Soul Master and taught him the Disorderly Wind Hammer Technique over the following three months. 12

After repeatedly suffering setbacks at Notting Academy, Tang San accepted Yu Xiaogang’s instruction more completely and committed himself to increasingly harsh training. Following his loss to Xiao Chenyu, he requested a transfer out of Dorm Seven in order to distance himself from Ao Yin. 18 31 33

Appearance

Tang San is introduced as a short-haired child dressed in blue in Holy Soul Village. 1

  • Short hair. 1
  • Blue clothing. 1
  • His hands become covered in a frost-like layer when using Mysterious Jade Hand. 5

Personality

Tang San is secretive and calculating about his strength. During his awakening, he followed the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record’s rule not to reveal his full power to anyone untrusted, hiding the Clear Sky Hammer while presenting Blue Silver Grass to Su Yuntao. 3 He also relies on concealed weapons and feigned surrender when facing opponents. 1 17

He is intensely proud, competitive, and unwilling to accept humiliation. After Ao Yin took the work-study student position, Tang San regarded him as a future target to surpass; after losing to Xiao Wu and Ao Yin, he repeatedly sought ways to reclaim his standing. 6 12 15 17 His defeats nevertheless strengthen his determination to cultivate, obtain a suitable soul ring, and become stronger. 18 25

Tang San’s pride can make him impulsive and overconfident. He believed his Ten-Year Lone Bamboo soul ring would let him demonstrate his superiority over Xiao Chenyu, only to be decisively defeated by the older student’s hundred-year ring. 30 31 Even after his setbacks, he remains resilient, asking Yu Xiaogang for devilish training and striving to enter an Intermediate Soul Master Academy. 33

During the Shrek assessment, Tang San showed greater tactical awareness and concern for his teammates. He opened the battle with Blue Silver Grass restraint, attempted to protect the group’s formation, and used his Tang Sect techniques to challenge the vastly stronger Zhao Wuji. 42 43 44

Story Role / Major Arcs

Notting Academy Enrollment

After Ao Yin claimed Holy Soul Village’s work-study student place, Tang Hao provided Tang San with a letter of recommendation to Notting Academy. There, Tang San formally became Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and learned that his second martial soul was the Clear Sky Hammer. 12 13

Dorm Seven Conflicts

Tang San entered Dorm Seven intending to challenge Ao Yin, but Xiao Wu fought him first and defeated him despite Tang San’s Level Ten soul power and Tang Sect arts. 15 16 He later challenged Ao Yin directly, had his finger broken, was defeated by Ao Yin’s martial skills, and was sent to the infirmary after being pinned to a wall by a thrown fruit knife. 17 18

After acquiring his first soul ring, Tang San challenged Xiao Chenyu in defense of Xiao Wu and Dorm Seven. His Pole Vault skill failed to overcome the sixth-grader’s Gale Demon Wolf martial soul and hundred-year ring, leaving Tang San knocked unconscious. 30 31 Upon waking, he asked Yu Xiaogang to transfer him to Dorm Eight to avoid Ao Yin and committed himself to six years of intensive training. 33

Hunting Soul Forest

Motivated by his defeats, Tang San asked Yu Xiaogang to help him acquire his first soul ring. 18 Yu Xiaogang sought a soul beast that could grant Blue Silver Grass greater toughness and paralysis effects. 22 When an injured Datura Snake appeared alongside a Six-Winged Frost Centipede, Tang San insisted on pursuing the snake rather than retreating. 25

Tang San personally killed the Datura Snake, but Ao Yin’s system caused its soul ring to drift away and Ao Yin crushed it before Tang San could absorb it. The loss left Tang San mentally devastated. 27 28 Yu Xiaogang then led him back to the Ten-Year Lone Bamboo, which Tang San killed and successfully absorbed as his first soul ring. 29

Shrek Academy Entrance Assessment

Tang San joined Xiao Wu, Ao Yin, Dai Mubai, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing in the assessment against Zhao Wuji, a Level 76 Soul Sage. He began the battle with Blue Silver Grass restraint and later used Parasitism in an effort to bind their examiner. 42 43

Tang San employed Pole Vault, Purple Demon Eye, Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, Mysterious Jade Hand, and Dragon Beard Needles against Zhao Wuji. Although his hidden weapons briefly inflicted pain and hindered Zhao Wuji, the Soul Sage expelled the needles with Gravity Squeeze and later struck Tang San down with Mighty Vajra Palm. 44 45 Tang San subsequently broke through to Soul Power Level 40. 48
