Background
Before joining Azure Cloud Sect, He Dazhi was a scholar who had passed the imperial examinations and held considerable prestige in his hometown. His status within the main He family branch and his recorded cultivation deeds led the town to build him a shrine while he was still alive upon his return. 88
At Big Bamboo Peak, He Dazhi became the fourth disciple under Tian Buyi. He was recognized as the sharpest-minded among the senior disciples and had already surpassed several older brothers in cultivation early in the story. 3
He was among the first to identify the significance of Luo Yunji's altered Taiji Mystic Purity Dao: rather than merely borrowing elemental effects from magic treasures, it could cultivate attributes of heaven and earth directly within the practitioner. 48
Personality
He Dazhi usually presents himself as a composed, scholarly cultivator. He approaches unfamiliar problems by observing details, testing assumptions, and weighing consequences rather than acting rashly. This makes him Big Bamboo Peak's frequent planner in matters ranging from cultivation theory and formations to political negotiations. 48 170 324
He is patient with Luo Yunji's unconventional behavior and often translates the younger disciple's ideas into practical action. Even when Luo Yunji's formation instructions are vague and repetitive, He Dazhi follows through until the warning formation is established. 106
Beneath his mild manner, He Dazhi can be decisive and severe. He killed multiple Demon Sect disciples in the Liubo arena, then deliberately restrained himself when Tian Buyi ordered him back. 287 288 He similarly used force against agitators threatening Two Mountains, while distinguishing Ghost King Sect disciples from unaffiliated troublemakers and handing the former to their own sect. 435
Abilities & Skills
Wind Arts
He Dazhi specializes in wind-based techniques, chiefly channeled through his brush treasures.
- Generates wind blades capable of pressuring powerful opponents, though an elder such as Old Ancestor Fengyue could disperse them easily. 197
- Creates large wind vortices known as Dragon Hangings to block enemies, disperse swarms, and cover retreats. 215 221
- Manifested a wind wall that stopped multiple sneak attacks aimed at his back. 287
- Combined his tornado with Zheng Dali's flames; the wind intensified the fire enough to leave a scorch mark on Li Jingzhi's robe. 1058
- Protected companions from Strange Souls with wind vortices, but was forced to retreat when corrosive smoke began merging with and overwhelming the technique. 552
Heavenly Heart
He Dazhi awakened a Heavenly Heart upon reaching the sixth level. Its exact attribute and effects have not been specified. 83
Twelve Steps and Physical Cultivation
He Dazhi cultivated the Twelve Steps movement technique and the physical discipline known as Jin during the Imperial City expedition.
- Used the Twelve Steps to escape Old Ancestor Fengyue after Wu Dayi briefly disrupted the elder's senses with Shadow Moon. 197
- Continued improving the group's footwork and physical cultivation while spiritual power was suppressed in the Forbidden Spirit Land. 196
Formations and Strategic Planning
He Dazhi is a capable formation assistant and battlefield planner.
- Worked with Luo Yunji to establish a warning formation outside their camp. 106
- Helped Luo Yunji deploy an improved formation within Flying Peak. 760
- Planned the attempt to lure the Kui Ox into a pit and coordinated the group's capture strategy. 324
- Negotiated with the Ghost King while arranging the righteous faction's withdrawal after the Kui Ox was subdued. 325
- Prepared Luo Yunji as a reserve force during the Liubo conflict, ensuring the group had an answer if the battle plan changed. 330
Scholarship, Medicine, and Investigation
His academic background informs his practical approach to cultivation and crisis management.
- Researched an antidote for the Mayfly Lice infestation. 130
- Diagnosed the Blood Mayfly crisis in the Imperial City through pulse-taking and blood testing. 168
- Investigated Li Manor despite the city's suppression of spiritual power, identified a Blood Refining Hall infiltrator, and exposed her magical treasure. 170
- Selected and personally trained five thousand soldiers to minimize the danger of using their blood-evil energy to restore Lu Daxin. 193
- Set ethical conditions for outsiders seeking Luo Yunji's new cultivation method, refusing instruction to the vicious, malicious, or unrighteous. 456
Diplomacy and Administration
He Dazhi frequently serves as Big Bamboo Peak's negotiator with outsiders.
- Defused Old Ancestor Fengyue's anger over the blood-refined Mountain and River Fan through apology, conversation, and food. 198
- Negotiated with the Ghost King for Heavenly Book Volume Two in exchange for a formation diagram, while advising him on control of Sanfu Town. 433
- Managed Two Mountains and ensured important reports, letters, and gifts reached Tian Buyi. 459
- Explained Luo Yunji's dealings with Longevity Hall to the righteous sects, preventing a dispute over the medicinal-bath formula from escalating. 838
Equipment
- Fresh Breeze and Jade Dew / Clear Breeze Jade Dew — A powerful brush treasure refined from a wind-aspected Zheng horn, Six-Tailed White Fox fur, Cheng Liquid, and other materials. It replaced the weaker Rivers and Mountains Brush and serves as He Dazhi's primary wind conduit. 150 197
- Mountain and River Fan — Old Ancestor Fengyue's former famed treasure, blood-refined by He Dazhi. He later used it to contain and refine half of the Kui Ox's soul. 198 339
- Fengyue Fan — Given to He Dazhi by Old Ancestor Fengyue before the latter returned to Jieshi Mountain for seclusion. 199
- Crystal beads — Numerous beads stored in the shaft of his brush, retained as a reserve against threats in the Forbidden Spirit Land. 180
Relationships
- Tian Buyi — His master. Tian Buyi relies on He Dazhi's intelligence and entrusted him with an oath to protect and return his fellow disciples safely. 403
- Luo Yunji — His Little Junior Brother. He Dazhi recognized the potential of Luo Yunji's improved cultivation method, helps implement his formations and plans, and is determined to protect him from the Great Calamity. 48 760 948
- Zhang Xiaofan — Fellow disciple and trusted partner. He Dazhi often assigns Zhang Xiaofan to urgent fieldwork, while Zhang Xiaofan supports him with food, Buddhist power, and practical assistance. 194 288 339
- Wu Dayi — Second Senior Brother and frequent co-planner. He Dazhi supports Wu Dayi's mental-attribute cultivation and relies on Shadow Moon when strategy requires a brief opening. 179 197
- Old Ancestor Fengyue — Began as an enemy pursuing the Mountain and River Fan; He Dazhi ultimately convinced him to travel with the group and later received the Fengyue Fan from him. 197 199
- Ghost King — A politically useful but carefully managed ally. He Dazhi negotiated several exchanges with him and proposed ways to integrate Ghost King Sect members into the imperial military structure. 325 433
- Daoist Cangsong — He Dazhi invited him to Two Mountains and informed him of the Great Calamity, offering him both protection and a chance to reunite with Wan Jianyi. 914
Story Role / Major Arcs

Imperial City Expedition
In the Forbidden Spirit Land surrounding the Imperial City, He Dazhi became the group's chief investigator and organizer. He uncovered links between the Blood Mayfly crisis and Blood Refining Hall, investigated Li Manor, trained soldiers, and arranged for the group to leave the city in order to draw Demon Sect attention away from civilians. 170 193 195
He faced Old Ancestor Fengyue while buying time for his brothers to escape. Although outmatched, he survived by combining strategy, the Twelve Steps, and Wu Dayi's intervention. 197
Liubo Mountain and the Righteous–Demonic Conflict
At Liubo Mountain, He Dazhi revealed a far harsher side by slaughtering Demon Sect opponents in the arena and effortlessly stopping a coordinated sneak attack. 287
He later planned elements of the Kui Ox operation, negotiated the withdrawal from the battlefield, and arranged Luo Yunji as a contingency for the larger battle. 324 325 330
Two Mountains and Sanfu Town
He Dazhi became a major administrator of Two Mountains, overseeing soldiers, cultivation instruction, formations, spiritual grain, and relations with rogue cultivators and demonic sects. 411 456 598
When sects questioned Big Bamboo Peak's connections with the Ghost King Sect, he answered the provocation with controlled intimidation, using his brush to capture the instigators and establishing that disorder would not be tolerated. 435 436
Great Calamity
As evidence mounted around the Great Calamity, He Dazhi investigated its connection to Luo Yunji, the Five Seas, the Heartless Sea, and the Solar Flame Essence. His inquiries led him to conclude that an ancient, immensely powerful being had arranged events across vast spans of time. 948 949
During Li Jingzhi's assault on Azure Cloud Mountain, He Dazhi exhausted the crystal beads in his brush without injuring the enemy. His cooperation with Zheng Dali's Flame Dragon Rod, however, produced one of the first attacks to leave a visible mark on Li Jingzhi. 1058
