Background

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of Konoha. Sakumo was once regarded as a prospective Fourth Hokage, but died by suicide after abandoning a mission to save comrades and becoming the target of village condemnation. Kakashi later discovers that many of his father's mission records were erased or destroyed, deepening his suspicions about Konoha's official history. 45 59 63

Before becoming Sasuke's teacher, Kakashi serves in the ANBU. His time there leaves him detached and surrounded by “an air of darkness,” worrying Might Guy, who hopes to see him removed from the organization. 21 22

While investigating intelligence about an Uchiha survivor, Kakashi suspects that the publicly sold information is bait. He and Guy purchase the bounty office's records on Uchiha Feng, then are drawn into Feng's conflict with Konoha. 15 16
