Team 7 Formation and Bell Test

Naruto becomes part of Team 7 after the Third Hokage adds Chenshu to the standard Naruto–Sasuke–Sakura lineup. During Kakashi's survival exercise, Naruto charges directly at Kakashi and is defeated almost immediately, ending up face-first in the grass. He nevertheless passes with the rest of the team when Kakashi reveals that valuing comrades—not taking a bell—is the true test. 2 3

Land of Waves Mission

Naruto joins the escort of bridge builder Tazuna. During the Demon Brothers' ambush, he is caught off guard and injured, then insists that he will not run when the mission is revealed to involve Zabuza Momochi. 4

Against Zabuza, Naruto tries to intervene after Kakashi is imprisoned by the Water Prison Technique but is knocked away by a Water Clone. 5 He later fights Haku alongside Sasuke inside the Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals, where Sasuke shields him from a volley of senbon before Chenshu's Wood Release breaks the mirrors. 6 7

Chunin Exams

Team 7 Special Training

Before the Chunin Exam preliminaries continue, Naruto trains with Sasuke against Chenshu under Kakashi's supervision. Naruto initially insists that he does not need Sasuke's help, but his Multi-Shadow Clones are immediately restrained by Chenshu's vines and dispersed. 12

After being defeated separately, Naruto and Sasuke cooperate: Naruto uses Shadow Clones to pressure Chenshu while Sasuke attempts to cover his retreat with the Great Fireball Technique. Chenshu counters them with a massive wooden hand that destroys the fireball and sweeps away Naruto's clones. 12

Konoha Crush

During the Sound and Sand invasion of Konohagakure, Naruto joins Sakura in pursuing Sasuke after Gaara loses control and flees the arena. Guided by Pakkun, the pair leave to support their teammate while Chenshu and the remaining Leaf ninja defend civilians. 19

Sasuke Retrieval Mission

Naruto is shocked when Kakashi announces that Sasuke has defected from Konohagakure. Despite the strain in their relationship, Naruto immediately resolves to bring him back. 23 26

He joins Shikamaru's pursuit squad alongside Sakura and other Leaf genin. When the group enters the canyon barrier created by the Sound Ninja, Naruto and the others are overwhelmed by the barrier-created Sound Ninja clones until Chenshu arrives and destroys the formation. 26 28
