Background

Sasuke graduates from the Ninja Academy as its recognized Uchiha prodigy, producing five stable clones in the graduation examination. Chenshu Senju's ten clones, however, surpass Sasuke's result and deepen Sasuke's interest in Chenshu's abrupt growth. 2

The Third Hokage assigns Sasuke to the unusual four-person Team 7 alongside Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and Chenshu, under Kakashi Hatake. 2

Sasuke's growing awareness of Chenshu's overwhelming strength damages his pride and intensifies his fixation on gaining enough power to kill Itachi Uchiha. His frustration eventually leads him to accept the Sound Four's offer to take him to Orochimaru. 23

Sasuke chooses to continue the mission after learning Zabuza Momochi may be targeting Tazuna. During Zabuza's Water Prison attack, he tries to support Naruto and attacks Zabuza's true body, but Zabuza's Water Clone injures his shoulder. 4 5

Sasuke and Naruto are trapped by Haku's Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals. He protects Naruto from a barrage of senbon, triggering the initial formation of his second Sharingan tomoe before Chenshu's Wood Clone destroys the mirrors. 6 7
