Background / History

Griselda works from an office in the First Heaven, where she reviews reports and investigates humans with Sacred Gears. Heaven seeks to identify and protect suitable Sacred Gear holders before rival factions—particularly the Grigori and the Underworld—can claim them. She also suspects that Ren possesses an undocumented Sacred Gear due to his unusual abilities, though his power is actually his System. 1

As a Heaven official, Griselda is aware that God has disappeared and that the Tree of Life system has become increasingly unstable without Him. This knowledge informs her concern for the Church's strained resources and the political consequences of public incidents involving Sacred Gears. 4

She has worked with Ren for roughly a year and a half, assigning missions to him as a freelance exorcist. Despite his refusal to become an official Church member, she considers him exceptionally reliable due to his perfect completion record. 4

Griselda oversees Heaven's investigation into Sacred Gear users and dispatches Ren to eliminate Stray Devils. She later assigns him to investigate the demon connected to a series of nun abductions near Vatican City. 1 2

After Ren kills Diodora and recovers the missing nuns, Griselda verifies the mission through the Vatican. She learns that Asia Argento was implicated in the incident and brings the matter to her superior, Gabriel. 4

Asia Argento's Expulsion

Although Griselda argues that Asia was deceived by Diodora, Gabriel and the other Seraphim order Asia's expulsion because her ability to heal devils could undermine the Church's faith. Griselda regrets the decision and privately hires Ren to protect Asia from fallen angels, using her own available funds because she cannot provide official support. 4 8

She continues monitoring threats to Asia, warning Ren that fallen angels and devils may be acting in Japan because of Asia's Sacred Gear. 14

Kyoto Disturbance

Griselda assigns Ren to investigate the Grigori, witches, and related forces operating around Kyoto. After he reports that Satanael, Witch's Night, and Void Cicada are cooperating, she orders him to prevent the Fallen of the Abyss from achieving their objective—while specifically telling him not to force himself if the danger becomes too great. 15 16

After Ren kills Satanael, Griselda recognizes that he stopped a potentially catastrophic Sacred Gear research plot. She advises him to leave Kyoto before the Five Great Houses intensify their hostility toward outsiders. 25

Holy Sword Investigation

Griselda gathers Ren, Xenovia, and Irina Shidou after three Holy Swords are stolen from the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Churches. She identifies them as the trustworthy personnel available to investigate, offers Ren substantial payment per recovered sword, and asks him to deliver a personal letter to Asia. 44

When the culprit is confirmed as the fallen angel executive Kokabiel, Griselda is unable to secure additional support for Xenovia and Irina. She objects to sending them into such danger and later appeals directly to Gabriel for an explanation. 48 49

After Kokabiel is defeated, Griselda is stunned to learn that Ren was responsible, as his ability to overcome an opponent of Kokabiel's level exceeds her expectations. She also directs Xenovia and Irina to follow Ren's instructions while they remain in Kuoh Town, reflecting her trust in his judgment and concern for their safety. 62 63

Romania Vampire Investigation and Later Crisis

Following the Kyoto events, Griselda summons Ren to First Heaven for another confidential assignment. Believing that he is the only suitable candidate, she tasks him with investigating active vampires in Romania. 159
