| First Appearance | Chapter 8 (mentioned); Chapter 36 (on-page appearance) |
Background / History
Rias governs Kuoh Town, a human town protected under her authority as a High-Class Devil. Her territory relies on familiars for surveillance rather than a town-wide barrier, a limitation that allows multiple outside factions to operate there unnoticed. 33 36
She is the younger sister of Sirzechs Lucifer, a Maou of the Underworld, and the heir to the Gremory family. Her noble status gives her considerable political importance, but also subjects her to an arranged marriage intended to preserve pure-blooded devil lineage and secure an alliance with the Phenex family. 33 37 42
Her proposed fiancé is Riser Phenex, a High-Class Devil whose family is renowned for its regenerative immortality. Rias is initially reluctant to settle the matter through a Rating Game because Riser has a complete peerage while her own team is smaller and, by Akeno's assessment, insufficiently prepared. 42
Rias's inability to effectively develop the Power of Destruction becomes a central cause of her crisis. Although she had devoted extensive effort to household skills, athletics, organization, and managing her peerage, she later acknowledges that this effort had been directed away from combat development. Ren's criticism, Kokabiel's attack, and the visible progress of Akeno and Koneko compel her to seek serious training. 49 54 78 98
Following a period of training under Ren and magical instruction from Lavinia Reni, Rias leads her peerage to victory over Riser in their decisive Rating Game. The result overturns the power imbalance that had enabled the arranged engagement and establishes her as a more credible successor to the Gremory family. 105 112 113 114
Appearance
Rias is a red-haired devil with fair skin, refined features, and an exceptionally imposing presence. She commonly appears in Kuoh Academy's school uniform. 36 37
- Brilliant red hair likened to blazing flames. 36
- Carries the majesty and nobility expected of the Gremory heir. 37
- Attends Kuoh Academy alongside Akeno Himejima. 36
- Wears more formal attire when representing the Gremory family at political functions, and has appeared with her hair tied in a ponytail for such occasions. 74
Personality
Rias is cautious and strategic when an unknown threat enters Kuoh Town. After discovering the remains of fallen angels and rogue exorcists at the abandoned church, she avoids acting rashly until she can determine whether the incident could affect relations between the Underworld and the fallen angels. 36 37
She is protective of her peerage and readily intervenes to prevent escalation, such as ordering Akeno to stand down during the confrontation with Raynare. She also apologizes decisively when Akeno's hostility toward the fallen angels threatens negotiations. 37
Despite her authority, Rias is initially sensitive about her own strength. Ren criticizes her for neglecting the development of her Power of Destruction, while Akeno attributes Rias's poor state of mind to pressure from her family and arranged marriage. 42 43 47 50
Rias particularly resents being regarded as someone who survives through her family's influence. This pride causes her to refuse retreat during Kokabiel's attack, even when she and Sona could have called upon their Maou siblings for immediate support. While this decision reveals her immaturity regarding the gap in their strength, it also reflects her sense of responsibility as Kuoh Town's lord. 54 117
After accepting that her previous efforts were misdirected, Rias becomes more receptive to criticism and instruction. She vows to improve, requests Ren's training personally, and continues practicing even after defeating Riser. 78 98 99 251
Her growing confidence also makes her more tactically assertive. During the Rating Game against Riser, she abandons a conventional formation in favor of a coordinated rush that exploits her team's unity and numerical disadvantage. 112
Abilities & Skills
Power of Destruction
Rias possesses the Gremory family's Power of Destruction, an inherited ability with demonstrated potential through her mother and elder brother, Sirzechs Lucifer. Her control and development of it are initially characterized as inadequate for her position and political crisis, but she begins substantially improving it through focused training. 42 47 98 99
- An inherited Gremory bloodline power. 42 47
- Considered central to her ability to confront Riser and protect herself from the arranged marriage. 42 47
- Ren states that she had made little progress in controlling it for over ten years. 47
- Her early attacks can overpower a Hellhound's fireball, but she initially requires repeated shots to kill the creature and cannot threaten Kokabiel with a full-power blast. 53 54
- Her destructive energy erases matter rather than relying solely on explosive force; during training, she melts away more than half of a mountain with a single large attack. 98
- In the Rating Game against Riser, her Power of Destruction annihilates his Phoenix flames and erases more than half of his body, though his Phenex bloodline initially restores the damage. 112 113
- By the Hero Faction incident, her refined Power of Destruction is assessed as having reached a combat level properly befitting a High-Class Devil. 257
Magic Aptitude and Melee Training
Rias possesses exceptional natural magical aptitude. Under Lavinia's instruction, she can understand the principles of spells quickly and manifest them without strictly reproducing every procedure from a spellbook. 105
Ren additionally trains her to supplement ranged destruction magic with close-quarters tactics, proposing that she combine weapons, physical combat, and potentially Power of Destruction-enhanced strikes to surprise enemies who assume she is solely a ranged caster. 105
- Her demonic-power density rises several levels during intensive training before the Rating Game. 105
- Her magical aura is visibly stronger by the time she encounters Riser in the Underworld. 107
- She continues developing techniques rather than relying exclusively on the innate erasure property of the Power of Destruction. 251
Devil Contracting
Rias can answer human devil-summoning requests delivered through familiars' flyers. She and her peerage respond when Ren uses a flyer to summon Akeno specifically. 36 37
- Uses familiars to distribute summoning flyers. 36
- Can travel to a client's location with members of her peerage through a teleportation circle. 37 38
Territory Surveillance
Rias uses familiars as Kuoh Town's eyes and ears. Their reports lead her peerage to investigate the abandoned church and later identify evidence of a large battle near town. 36 42
- Familiars detect suspicious activity and report to her peerage. 36 42
- The system is criticized as insufficient for monitoring the entire town. 36 42
Leadership and Rating Game Tactics
Rias leads her peerage in combat and demonstrates increasing strategic flexibility. During her Rating Game with Riser, she uses Gasper's scouting report to identify the enemy's formation, then orders her team to advance as a single group and eliminate Riser's servants before confronting him. 112
- Uses her peerage's differing abilities in coordinated attacks rather than relying only on her own Power of Destruction. 112 113
- Encourages her servants to prioritize survival even when facing an enemy she believes they must confront. 54
- Works alongside Sona Sitri's peerage and other allies in the defense of Kuoh Town and the Underworld. 54 268 276
Power Progression
| Chapter(s) | Advancement | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 42, 47, 54 | Exposed early deficiency | Rias's Power of Destruction has stagnated for years. Her attacks fail to kill a Hellhound immediately, and her all-out blast is casually dispersed by Kokabiel. |
| 78 | Commitment to improvement | After Ren compares her unfavorably with Akeno and Koneko, Rias openly vows to train her Power of Destruction and defeat Riser in a Rating Game. |
| 98, 99 | Initial focused development | Ren begins guiding her directly. Rias uses a large destructive sphere to erase over half of a mountain, and her second attempt shows a measurable increase in range and output. |
| 105, 107 | Intensive pre-Rating Game growth | Her demonic-power density rises several levels, her aura becomes noticeably stronger, and she begins learning magic and close-combat applications alongside her destruction training. |
| 112, 113, 114 | Rating Game victory | Rias leads her peerage in defeating Riser's servants and personally destroys much of Riser's body with the Power of Destruction. Akeno's light attack prevents his regeneration, securing the team's victory. |
| 251, 257 | High-Class Devil-level combat refinement | Rias continues training after the Rating Game, recognizes her lack of specialized destruction techniques, and displays power considered appropriate for a High-Class Devil when confronting Cao Cao. |
| 276 | Large-scale defensive contribution | Rias joins Lavinia, Grayfia, and other allies in blocking Gatanothor's destructive beam before it can strike Lilith. |
Relationships
- Akeno Himejima — Her peerage member and close confidante. Akeno seeks help for Rias's arranged-marriage problem and strongly defends Rias against Ren's criticism. Their relationship remains close as they train together, although Akeno later competes subtly with Rias for Ren's attention. 37 42 50 98 117 132
- Koneko Toujou — Her peerage member. Rias previously saved Koneko after Kuroka's actions implicated her in a serious Underworld incident. Rias later supports Koneko's senjutsu training and relies on her in the Rating Game. 36 38 98 112
- Kiba Yuuto — Her peerage member and Knight; he investigates the abandoned church alongside Rias's group. He fights beside her against Kokabiel's Hellhounds and in the Rating Game against Riser. 36 37 54 112
- Gasper Vladi — Her peerage member whose sealed Sacred Gear and vampire abilities are incorporated into Rias's Rating Game strategy. Rias allows Ren to train Gasper after recognizing his potential and uses him as a scout against Riser. 99 105 112
- Ren — An unaffiliated human operative who enters Kuoh Town, captures the fallen angels targeting Asia, and summons Rias's group to explain the situation. They exchange contact information for possible paid cooperation. He later becomes Rias's primary combat instructor, helps prepare her peerage for the Rating Game, and is acknowledged by Rias as her master. Rias protects him from Riser's peerage and increasingly trusts his judgment; her family later expresses approval of a possible marriage between them. 36 37 38 98 105 107 117 279
- Suzaku Himejima — Cousin of Akeno and Ren's claimed associate; Ren's letter from Suzaku helps ease Rias's group's suspicion toward him. 37
- Riser Phenex — Her nominal fiancé in a politically arranged marriage between the Gremory and Phenex families. Rias defeats him in their decisive Rating Game after undergoing intensive training with her peerage. 42 106 112 114
- Ravel Phenex — Riser's younger sister and a former member of his peerage. After Riser's defeat, she later transfers into Rias's peerage and begins attending Kuoh Academy. 114 265
- Sona Sitri — Fellow High-Class Devil, Kuoh Academy student, friend, and rival. They cooperate during attacks on Kuoh Town and stand together against Pluto's Grim Reapers, while Sona's competitive nature drives her to match Rias's growth. 54 120 268
- Sirzechs Lucifer — Her elder brother and a Maou of the Underworld. Though he teases her about her childhood, he remains deeply protective and respects her wish to improve independently. 33 42 77 78
- Gremory Family — Rias's parents initially pressure her into the Phenex engagement, but later recognize Ren's support of her growth and approve of their potential relationship. 42 117 279
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kuoh Town Investigation
Rias investigates the killing of rogue exorcists and fallen angels at Kuoh Town's abandoned church. Her group finds ritual equipment and corpses, but no surviving perpetrators, leading her to treat the unknown third party as a potential threat. 36
When Ren summons Akeno using a devil-contract flyer, Rias accompanies her peerage to his house. She learns that Raynare, Mittelt, and Kalawarner had entered Kuoh independently to steal Asia Argento's Sacred Gear, only to be defeated and bound by Ren. 36 37
Contact with Ren
Rias initially confronts Ren over his presence and activities in her territory, but accepts that he is an unaffiliated free agent rather than a direct enemy. After Ren establishes his connection to Suzaku Himejima, Rias leaves on civil terms and exchanges contact information with him. 37 38
Arranged Marriage Crisis
Akeno reveals that Rias is being pressured to marry Riser Phenex for family and Underworld political interests. Ren proposes either killing Riser or training Rias's peerage for a Rating Game, while Akeno rejects the assassination proposal because Rias could be blamed for Riser's death. 42
Ren later identifies Rias's lack of progress with the Power of Destruction as a major weakness. Akeno attempts to defend Rias by emphasizing her diligence in domestic work, athletics, and tactical study, but the criticism contributes to Rias confronting the seriousness of her situation. 43 47 49 50
Kokabiel's Attack on Kuoh Town
Kokabiel targets Kuoh Town in an attempt to provoke conflict among the Three Factions, releasing Hellhounds into Rias's territory and later confronting Rias's group directly. Rias uses the Power of Destruction against the invading beasts and refuses to abandon her town despite the danger. 45 53 54
The battle exposes the gap between Rias and a Fallen Angel executive. Her full-power attack is dispersed by Kokabiel, and she is saved when Ren intervenes against Kokabiel's next Spear of Light. Afterward, Rias thanks Ren for saving Akeno and Koneko and begins taking the need for strength more seriously. 54 55 58
Training Under Ren
After observing the rapid advances made by Akeno and Koneko under Ren's guidance, Rias admits that she had treated routine devil work as sufficient training and asks Ren to train her as well. He instructs her to pursue the Power of Destruction through direct practice and emotionally focused visualization. 98
Rias initially struggles to grasp the advice, but repeated attacks against a mountain confirm both the destructive nature of her inherited ability and her considerable untapped potential. Her training later expands to include magic under Lavinia and Ren's proposed melee-mage tactics. 98 99 105
Rating Game Against Riser
Rias travels to the Underworld with her peerage to resolve the engagement through a Rating Game against Riser. Before the match, she openly rejects Riser's attempts to treat the marriage as inevitable and intervenes when his peerage threatens Ren. 106 107
During the one-hour Rating Game, Rias rejects a conventional scattered formation and leads her team in a concentrated assault. Her side swiftly eliminates Riser's servants, then confronts Riser at his base. 111 112
Rias's Power of Destruction can destroy Riser's body but cannot permanently overcome his Phoenix regeneration. Akeno ultimately uses a Spear of Light to halt his revival, allowing Rias's peerage to win and ending Riser's dominance over the engagement dispute. 113 114
Three Factions Conference
Rias hosts Ren and several high-ranking Underworld figures at a formal gathering connected to the impending Three Factions conference. Sirzechs and Serafall arrive to thank Ren for saving Rias during Kokabiel's attack, though their unexpected appearance embarrasses her. 74 76 77
At the subsequent conference in Kuoh Town, Rias is unsettled by the political pressure surrounding the gathering. When Gasper is exploited in an attack on the meeting, she responds with anger at the use of her servant as a weapon. 85 87
Loki Threat
When Loki becomes a potential threat to Kuoh Town, Rias refuses her parents' request that she return to the Underworld for safety. She declares that she cannot abandon the town under her jurisdiction merely because a foreign enemy may attack it. 117
Rias invokes Ren's role as her master to persuade her family to let her remain. Her parents ultimately agree, while asking Ren to continue watching over their determined daughter. 117
Hero Faction and Underworld Incidents
Following continued training, Rias confronts Cao Cao when the Hero Faction threatens Kuoh Town. Her improved Power of Destruction earns his acknowledgement, even though he considers her unworthy of facing him directly and summons a force of magical beasts against her group. 257
When Pluto leads hundreds of Grim Reapers into Kuoh Town under accusations of collusion with Ophis, Rias treats the incursion as an act of war and stands beside Sona Sitri against the invaders. 268
During the later magical-beast invasion of the Underworld, Rias joins Grayfia, Lavinia, and other allies in defending Lilith from Gatanothor's attacks, contributing to the effort to prevent the capital's destruction. 276
