Background / History

Approximately a decade before the main events, Nayue entered a contract with a demon to gain immense power. The price was her life and soul: her true body was made the key to the Prison Barrier, where it remained in eternal sleep while she acted in the world through a magical doll. Her contract also made her responsible for imprisoning dangerous criminals within the barrier. 182 210 211

Nayue's closest witch companion was Aya Tokoyogi. When Aya attempted to use Itogami Island for a large-scale experiment intended to nullify magic worldwide, Nayue defeated and imprisoned her in the Prison Barrier despite the personal cost. 184 218 219

As compensation for her service and confinement, the Japanese government and Artificial Island Management Corporation allowed Nayue to move freely and employ her as an Attack Mage. She became a notably obedient but heavily supervised security-force instructor, while teaching at Saikai Academy allowed her to experience the vitality and freedom she felt adults lacked. 216 220

Nayue first encountered Ren on Gozo Island while investigating remnants of the Black Death Emperor Faction on behalf of Dimitrie Vattler. She witnessed Ren seal the Fourth Primogenitor and sought custody of the Primogenitor to preserve the balance between supernatural powers. 177

Nayue has a petite, doll-like appearance that causes strangers to mistake her for an elementary-school-aged child, despite her mature demeanor and position of authority. Her active body was originally a magical doll linked to her sleeping true body. 177 182
