Background / History

Otto devoted decades, his fortune, and his personal life to a nuclear fusion experiment. The accident that derailed the project killed his wife, while Oscorp executives made him the scapegoat and dismissed him. Grieving and enraged, he turned to crime with four mechanical tentacles attached to his body. 20

As Doctor Octopus, Otto robbed a bank, took Aunt May hostage, and attempted to kill Spider-Man. He later allied with Harry Osborn against Spider-Man, attacked Peter and Mary Jane at a restaurant, and repeatedly endangered civilians during his battles with Li Nian and Peter. 20 22 24 25

Otto's obsession culminated in restarting his nuclear fusion device despite the danger it posed to New York. Li Nian used the Mind Stone to clear the tentacles' influence and Otto's disordered thoughts, initially leaving him catatonic. Once conscious, Otto remembered his crimes and chose to help stop the experiment rather than preserve his dream. Li Nian instead modified the device into a safe, functional design. 26 27

Afterward, Otto became Li Nian's close scientific collaborator. He worked in a laboratory purchased for him, refined his fusion technology with Li Nian's assistance, and investigated ways to send Li Nian across universes. Over the following six months, Otto, Li Nian, and Peter analyzed and fought parasitic monsters appearing throughout the city. Otto initially rejected the possibility of magic, but continued researching the creatures despite being unable to explain their magical properties. 30 31

Otto helped build a Regeneration Cradle based on Li Nian's knowledge, using it to treat Peter after his battles with Venom. When Eddie endangered Peter, Otto abandoned his research to join the fight, regarding Peter as his student. 34 38 40

During the final confrontation involving Eddie and Flint Marko, Otto fought Flint and used a green-light device mounted on one of his tentacles to force Sandman back into human form. He later activated the spatial connection point that allowed Li Nian to attempt returning home. 43 44
