Background / History
Shrek Academy is credited with defeating Spirit Hall; afterward, the Heaven Dou Empire was renamed the Federation. It later became one of the continent’s most influential academies and institutions. 3
The academy participated in the original founding balance of the Spirit Pagoda alongside the Star Luo, Heaven Dou, and Dou Ling Empires, soul beasts, and other powers. According to Mu Hongchen, Shrek Academy was the first major faction driven out as the Spirit Pagoda’s shared-power system collapsed. 42
The Shrek Academy Inspection Corps dates back roughly 16,000 years. Its inner-court disciples were dispatched against dangerous soul masters and incidents that states could not or would not address; inspectors could even supervise officials. 79
After seeing the Heavenly Screen’s account of the academy’s future assessments, Mu En condemns their dangers and resolves to reform Shrek’s assessments, rules, teachers, and students while he is alive. He regards the destruction of the academy in his era as an opportunity to rebuild it around its educational purpose. 175 176
Mu En subsequently insists that Shrek must adapt to advancing Soul Tools rather than rely on Martial Soul superiority, its Limit Douluo, or the Golden Ancient Tree. Watching the later bombardment of Shrek City, he concludes that unchecked development has turned the academy into a threatening power in the eyes of other factions, ensuring continued attacks unless its institutional character changes. 197 235
In Yun Ming’s era, an assault involving two Level-Twelve Godslayer Soul Missiles devastates Shrek City and destroys the academy’s foundations. Afterward, while the city center remains in ruins, the Spirit Pagoda establishes Spirit Academy on land at the edge of Shrek Academy’s former site. 234 235 237 258
Campus and Resources
- Scale — Shrek Academy occupies an immense area within Shrek City and is regarded as both the continent’s greatest academy and part of its greatest city. Huo Yuhao proposed the expansion that made Shrek City the continent’s largest city. 20
- Sea God Lake and Sea God Island — The academy built the vast, underground-water-fed artificial Sea God Lake to commemorate Tang San. Its inner court occupies the island at the lake’s center, also called Sea God Island, distinct from the historical Sea Soul Masters’ holy land. 28
- Sparring arena — A sunken circular arena at the academy’s center has tiered stands accommodating several thousand spectators. 21
- Sea God Pavilion — A major academy facility built within or around the Golden Ancient Tree; it is said to possess security comparable to a Federation laboratory. 50
- Golden Ancient Tree — A conscious being rather than a soul beast. Its trunk was carved through to provide access to Sea God Pavilion, leaving it resentful toward humans and potentially exploitable by infiltrators. Yin Hongye later plants a Red Lotus Seed beneath it that takes root, absorbs its nutrients, and traps Ah Yin inside. 50 184
- Deep Meditation rooms — Beneath the academy are 108 cultivation rooms, each suited to different Martial Soul environments. Inner-court disciples receive one opportunity for Deep Meditation. Yin Hongye later plans to take all 108 rooms; the subsequent removal of the underground holdings deprives Shrek of this foundation. 50 182 184
- Dragon remains — The underground holdings reportedly include 1,001 Dread Demon Dragon skulls collected over 800 years. 50
- Silver Dragon’s Dragon Pill — The Dragon Pill was hidden in Sea God Pavilion. It can purify the body, strengthen bloodline and bones, and allow a cultivator’s body to withstand advancement toward Limit Douluo level. 50 51
- Treasure vault — Shrek keeps major assets in a vault within the Golden Ancient Tree. Yin Hongye and his companions later find a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone there; the dust leads Qian Renxue to conclude that the holdings have not been properly inventoried for decades. The group subsequently packs up the underground holdings, leaving Qian Renxue to regard the academy as possessing little beyond a compromised Golden Ancient Tree. 182 183 184
- Soul Spirit research — Shrek Academy possesses at least a preliminary Soul Spirit design draft. 19
- Sea God’s Light — The academy possesses a Sea God inheritance and can employ Sea God’s Light. Yun Ming and Mu En use the Golden Ancient Tree in attempts to shield the campus, although these defenses do not prevent its later devastation. 27 168 235
Admissions and Education
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Application requirements | Applicants must be recommended by a major city, be no older than fifteen, and possess at least level 25 Soul Power. 20 |
| Entrance-exam economy | Yin Hongye states that the academy’s admissions process has produced a large surrounding industry chain. He later offers paid guarantees of admission while seeking to direct stronger applicants to Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy. His quoted guarantee costs one million Federation coins and excludes guaranteed Inner Court admission. 20 114 |
| Inner Court graduation | Inspection Corps members must complete 30 inspection missions before graduating; teachers leading the missions do not intervene. 79 |
| Inspection compensation | The inspection missions are unpaid, with service framed as an honor and duty. 79 |
| Soul tool education | Shrek historically prioritized Martial Souls over soul tools. After Mu En assessed Sun Moon technology as superior, it launched an exchange program intended to copy Sun Moon’s soul-tool systems, materials, forging methods, and fixed soul tools. 93 |
| First-year final examination | Cai Yue’er orders freshmen to travel alone from Shrek Academy to Mingdu and back within fifteen days, pass through at least ten cities, and independently defeat opponents whose Soul Power is at least five levels higher. The five worst performers face expulsion. Students surrender their money and storage and communication Soul Tools before departing; teachers observe but ordinarily do not rescue them, and participants bear the risk of death. 174 175 |
| Exchange students | Huo Yuhao and He Caitou are sent to Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy, while Xiao Hongchen and Meng Hongchen study at Shrek. Yin Hongye characterizes the arrangement as an exchange of hostages intended to ensure mutual restraint. 93 |
| Foreign students | Long Yue of Monster Academy and Star Luo princess Dai Yun’er are reported to have gone to Shrek to study. 203 |
| Pill-related expulsions | Yin Hongye states that everyone he persuaded to take his Soul Sage advancement pill was permanently expelled from Shrek. The pill grants Soul Sage strength at the cost of lifespan and damages talent and cultivation foundations. 232 |
Policies and Controversies
Political influence
Shrek Academy publicly claims political neutrality, but Yin Hongye and Mu Hongchen describe it as a core force of the Federation Parliament’s dovish faction, with graduates in the military, parliamentary seats, and influence throughout the Federation. They also allege that the academy interfered in the Sun Moon Empire’s internal affairs and participated in an assassination attempt against its monarch. 51
Yin Hongye describes Shrek City as belonging to the academy rather than the Federation and functioning as a state within a state, even without formal independence. On that basis, he argues that his position as the Federation’s Supreme Commander of the Three Services does not oblige him to defend the city against a Godslayer Soul Missile. Mu Hongchen also points to the concentration of Limit Douluo at Shrek, Tang Sect headquarters, and Spirit Pagoda headquarters as grounds for expecting the city to protect itself. 197
A Shrek representative openly opposes military action against Dou Ling in the Federation Parliament, immediately receiving support from the Tang Sect’s representative. 209
After witnessing the Godslayer Soul Missile attack, Mu En argues that other factions no longer see Shrek as an academy but as an overbearing power they cannot safely challenge or avoid. He regards this perception, rather than Shrek’s own claims about its intentions, as the source of its repeated disasters. 235
Secret Art Soul Bones
Shrek Academy is said to reward students with Secret Art Soul Bones. Mu Hongchen describes their creation as requiring the slaughter of one hundred Soul Beasts of the same species within half an hour; direct fusion reportedly grants a permanent five-percent Soul Power increase. 51
The technique has only a ten-percent success rate. Although the resulting bones are considered low-quality, they possess a fusion property allowing combination with two additional Soul Bones of similar attributes. Mu Hongchen states that the practice is no longer permitted. 51
The revelation provokes outrage among the soul beasts, particularly because of the academy’s accumulated Dread Demon Dragon remains. 50 51
Mingdu destruction
Yin Hongye states that Shrek Academy blew up Mingdu during a conflict with the Sun Moon Empire, causing one-third of the city to collapse and leaving countless casualties. Mu Hongchen calls the event the Sun-Moon Lightless Destruction Day. 51
Ties to evil soul masters
Several Shrek-associated figures are linked to members of the Holy Spirit Cult:
- Mu En — Former Sea God Pavilion master who loved Ye Xishui, later known as the Holy Spirit Cult’s Supreme Leader and Death God Douluo. 107
- Wu Changkong — Former inner-court disciple and Sea God Pavilion candidate who left Shrek after refusing to abandon Long Bing, a Holy Spirit Cult spy. 107
- Yan Shaozhe — Reportedly involved with Feng Ling, the Holy Spirit Cult’s vice leader. Yin Hongye also identifies him as the grandson of Long Xiaoyao and Ye Xishui. 109
- Ma Xiaotao and Bei Bei — Yin Hongye and Mu Hongchen also cite Ma Xiaotao’s transformation into an evil soul master and Bei Bei’s involvement with a Holy Spirit Cult saintess. Ma Xiaotao is later identified as the Holy Spirit Cult’s Phoenix Saintess and a Sea God Pavilion master. 109 253
- Tang Ya — A former Shrek student who later joined the Holy Spirit Cult and advanced from four rings to Soul Sage. Yin Hongye later identifies her as the Blue Silver Saintess, Bei Bei’s wife, and one of the Shrek Seven Monsters. 127 253
- Yun Ming and Leng Yulai — Yin Hongye links Leng Yulai’s fall to her love for Yun Ming. She interpreted an embrace between him and Leng Yaozhu as proof that her sister had successfully confessed and betrayed her, although she had not heard their conversation. Yin Hongye explicitly distinguishes this indirect connection from Yun Ming directly causing her transformation. 253
Long Bing’s infiltration involved an attempt to steal intelligence from the academy’s archives under pressure from her father, Dark Hummingbird. Shrek discovered her identity, but Wu Changkong chose to leave with her rather than preserve his academy career. 107
Long Yeyue objects to treating Tang Ya’s case as an academy responsibility because Tang Ya left Shrek before becoming an evil soul master. Mu Hongchen counters that Shrek applies a double standard, relentlessly pursuing outsiders while offering its own associates another chance. 78
The later revelations prompt Mu En to blame Yan Shaozhe’s conduct and teaching for the academy’s repeated romantic entanglements with evil soul masters. Yan Shaozhe disputes the attribution and privately notes that Mu En himself taught him. 253
Evil soul master classification
Shrek’s recorded criteria state that Martial Souls are not inherently good or evil, but classify a Martial Soul as evil if its cultivation requires special methods. Yin Hongye challenges the breadth of this standard by observing that Qian Renxue’s Angel Martial Soul grows through killing evil soul masters and Ya Li’s Prayer Angel can grow through absorbing faith. 80
Tournament allegations
Yin Hongye publicly accuses Shrek Academy of repeated tournament cheating. His allegations include Huo Yuhao using Mental Detection from outside the arena to support Shrek competitors, remotely assisting Wang Qiu’er despite not being on the roster, and concealing an ineligible Wang Qiu’er on the field through Simulation. 110 111
The disclosures trigger widespread backlash, online campaigns against the academy, and Shrek’s withdrawal from the Heavensea Alliance Tournament’s team competition. 111 112
In the tournament unfolding in Mu En’s era outside the Heavenly Screen, Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy concentrates Xiao Hongchen and Meng Hongchen’s attacks on Huo Yuhao while Ma Rulong contains the other Shrek competitors. By the end of the round-robin stage, Shrek has not won a single match, undermining its undefeated reputation. 154 167
Final-examination practices
The first-year final examination sends students without money, communication devices, or other resources through multiple cities to challenge stronger soul masters. Ling Zichen says teachers secretly observe but do not ordinarily intervene even when students face death. Yin Hongye recounts killing eight Shrek examinees who attacked him when he was younger. Mu En denounces the system as a betrayal of the academy’s purpose and vows to reform it. 174 175 176
During one examination, five students are killed by classmates seeking to ensure they will not rank among the five worst and be expelled. Yun Ming learns what happened after the surviving examinees are released from Yin Hongye’s tunnel. 177
The rules also prohibit cooperation except in special circumstances; students caught teaming up or assisting one another fail immediately. Mu En interprets the external challenges as an attempt to force other powers to accommodate Shrek, rather than a legitimate educational assessment. 175 176
The Spirit Pagoda later exploits this controversy in Spirit Academy’s recruitment campaign, advertising that its own final examinations do not require students to cause trouble elsewhere. 258
Relationships
- Spirit Hall — Historical adversary defeated by Shrek Academy; its defeat preceded the Heaven Dou Empire’s transformation into the Federation. 3
- Spirit Pagoda — Former participant in the Spirit Pagoda’s founding balance of power; later expelled from that arrangement. Shrek and the Spirit Pagoda maintain open hostility. Yin Hongye deliberately aggravates their rivalry, and Qian Gu Dongfeng secretly orders a search for another God-Slaying Soul Tool shell while keeping Shrek uninformed. After Shrek’s destruction, the Spirit Pagoda establishes Spirit Academy beside its former site. 42 74 230 258
- Tang Sect — Closely connected through historical figures such as Huo Yuhao and Tang San; the two institutions are jointly criticized during the academy’s public scandals. Their parliamentary representatives also jointly oppose sending troops to Dou Ling. 51 88 209
- Golden Ancient Tree — The sentient tree housing Sea God Pavilion resents the academy after humans carved through its trunk. It is also the only part of the academy left intact after the Sun Moon Empire’s bombardment in Mu En’s era. Yin Hongye later undermines it with a nutrient-draining Red Lotus Seed, seeking to prevent it from supporting Shrek’s revival. 50 168 171 180 184
- Sea God Pavilion — Shrek Academy’s elite internal institution and repository for major assets, including the Silver Dragon’s Dragon Pill. 50
- Body Sect — Rival faction that assaults Shrek Academy under Du Bushi to demand Huo Yuhao’s return. 104 105
- Di Tian and the soul beasts — Di Tian targets Shrek due to its alleged Soul Beast killings and later commands beast-tide attacks against it. 51 105 106
- Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy — Longstanding academic and tournament rival; Shrek’s exchange program is accused of stealing Sun Moon’s soul-engineering technology. The rival academy also recruits talented applicants and students away from Shrek. 93 110 111 114 174 177
- Sun Moon Empire — Historical enemy in the conflict surrounding Mingdu’s destruction. In Mu En’s era, its forces bombard Shrek Academy with newly developed fixed-mounted Soul Cannons. 51 168
- Yin Hongye — Repeated challenger and adversary who attacks Shrek’s reputation, interferes with its admissions and examinations, and later imprisons its students and teachers for ransom. He subsequently strips its underground resources, sabotages the Golden Ancient Tree, and declines to stop a Godslayer Soul Missile intended for the academy. 20 111 114 176 177 184 197
- Holy Spirit Cult — Infiltrates the academy through Long Bing and is connected to numerous Shrek-associated figures. Ghost Emperor later directs an assault on Shrek City involving Level-Twelve fixed Soul Cannon shells. 107 109 234 253
- Federation — Shrek exercises influence through parliament and military graduates, but its practical autonomy and antagonistic relationships complicate expectations of Federation protection. Yin Hongye refuses responsibility for defending Shrek City, while Mu En recognizes that the relationship between Shrek and the Federation is largely superficial. 51 197 230
- Spirit Academy — A new Spirit Pagoda-backed academy established at the edge of Shrek’s former site after its destruction. Its admissions publicity directly contrasts its examinations with Shrek’s controversial practices. 258
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Yin Hongye’s challenge — Yin Hongye publicly challenges every Shrek student under thirty, ultimately confronting a seven-member team of Soul Sages in the academy arena. His killing intent severely damages the students’ minds, prompting Long Yeyue and later Yun Ming to intervene. 20 21 23 24
- Golden Ancient Tree damage — During the confrontation, Yin Hongye threatens the Golden Ancient Tree and causes severe damage to it; a branch breaks away and is buried. 24 28
- Institutional exposés — Yin Hongye and Mu Hongchen expose the academy’s alleged Soul Beast practices, political influence, historical violence, ties to evil soul masters, and tournament violations. The disclosures lead students and affiliated original academies to consider leaving. 51 52 109 111 112
- Heaven Dou City destruction — In an account set in Heaven Dou City, Di Tian descends the Dragon God’s Claw, erasing Shrek Academy and leveling half of the city. 59
- Body Sect conflict and beast tide — Du Bushi besieges the academy to reclaim Huo Yuhao. After Mu En uses the Sea God Light, Di Tian launches a beast tide and later strikes the Golden Ancient Tree while attempting to kill Huo Yuhao. 104 105 106
- Heavensea Alliance Tournament — Shrek’s exhibition team is severely injured by Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy. Public broadcasts of alleged historical cheating further damage Shrek’s reputation and force it to abandon the tournament’s team event. 110 111 112
- Freshman-exam infiltration — Yin Hongye and Mu Hongchen infiltrate Shrek City during the academy’s entrance examinations, posing as Federation law enforcement and kidnapping applicants whom they accuse of links to evil soul masters. 127
- Tournament collapse in Mu En’s era — At the Star Luo City tournament, the Body Sect replaces Heaven Soul Royal Academy and Long Aotian charges Huo Yuhao. Sun Moon’s team subsequently isolates and targets Huo Yuhao, and Shrek finishes the round-robin stage without a victory. 140 154 167
- Sun Moon bombardment — In Mu En’s era, Sun Moon forces test fixed-mounted Soul Cannons against the academy. Xian Lin’er and Qian Duoduo are injured trying to intercept the attack, while Mu En’s Sea God’s Light and Golden Ancient Tree barrier fail to protect most of the campus. Huo Yuhao and his companions later return to scorched ruins; Yan Shaozhe maintains that Shrek survives through its people. 168 171
- Declining student body — Tang Wulin joins Shrek under Wu Changkong but finds it desolate and its students weaker than expected. Wu Changkong is similarly startled on returning after more than ten years; no student in that year’s first-year group has reached Soul Ancestor. Cai Yue’er believes Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy has drawn away many stronger candidates. 173 174
- Final-examination tunnel — During the first-year final examination, students and teachers enter Yin Hongye’s abandoned-tunnel prison, which loops through space and suppresses their Martial Souls and Soul Power. Cai Yue’er leaves Shrek to investigate and is captured. Yun Ming negotiates for fifty-two captives, paying valuable treasures to secure their release; five other students are found to have been killed by classmates. Yin Hongye then forcibly takes Tang Wulin, Xu Xiaoyan, Xie Xie, and other students while Shrek’s elders decline to escalate the confrontation. 174 175 176 177 178
- Threats to remaining assets — Ghost Emperor declares an intention to destroy Shrek Academy. Separately, Yin Hongye plans to approach the Golden Ancient Tree and take the academy’s underground resources; he later explores its treasure vault and proposes removing all 108 Deep Meditation rooms. 171 178 182 183
- Removal of foundations and sabotage — Yin Hongye and his companions pack up the underground holdings. He then plants a Red Lotus Seed that absorbs the Golden Ancient Tree’s nutrients and immobilizes Ah Yin within it. He had previously discussed using Fire Lotus Seeds, each with destructive power comparable to a Limit Douluo’s self-destruction, to prevent Shrek from rebuilding around the tree. 180 184
- Ignored Godslayer warning — Yin Hongye and Mu Hongchen recognize a Godslayer Soul Missile being transported toward the former Evil Demon Forest but decline to intervene, expecting Shrek to defend itself. Watching through the Heavenly Screen, Mu En rebukes Yan Shaozhe’s dismissal of Soul Tools and warns that Shrek will fall behind if it refuses to adapt. 197
- Further exploitation plans — Yin Hongye designs another looping prison disguised as a Soul-Guided Train route from Mingdu to Qiankun Asking Love Valley. He plans to use a Shrek graduate to divert attention from the scheme, while Mu Hongchen argues that the academy’s attachment to its reputation makes its members susceptible to provocation. 212
- Spirit Pagoda tensions — Yin Hongye provokes Qian Gu Dongfeng and predicts that he will direct his anger toward Shrek. Mu En recognizes the deliberate manipulation of the two institutions’ longstanding rivalry. Qian Gu Dongfeng then orders a covert search for another God-Slaying Soul Tool shell. 230
- Destruction of Shrek City — Ghost Emperor’s forces launch an opening barrage of fixed Soul Tool missiles, drawing defenders from Shrek and the Tang Sect into the air. Two Level-Twelve Godslayer Soul Missiles then engulf the city in green and purple destructive energy. Yun Ming draws on the Golden Ancient Tree, forms a divine-position rune, and disintegrates the divine position to release the greatest power he can attain. The subsequent fiery pillar destroys the academy’s foundations, and observers in Mu En’s era acknowledge that the future Shrek Academy is completely gone. Yin Hongye watches after having removed people he considers potential seeds for its revival, particularly Tang Wulin. 233 234 235 237
- Spirit Academy’s establishment — After Yin Hongye’s group returns to the Federation, Shrek City’s center is still ruined. The Spirit Pagoda has already erected a Spirit Academy sign beside Shrek’s former site and distributes recruitment material criticizing Shrek’s final examinations. 258
