Background / History

Hydra’s research division forcibly recruited Dr. Abraham Erskine after Hitler took an interest in his work on super-soldiers. Johann Schmidt, Hydra’s leader, compelled Erskine to administer an incomplete Super Soldier Serum; the treatment enhanced Schmidt but disfigured him into the Red Skull and intensified his ambition. 15

During World War II, Hydra operated research bases, weapons factories, covert spy networks, prison facilities, and advanced armored units. Its scientists developed energy weapons from research into the Cosmic Cube, while its agents infiltrated Allied institutions and civilian power structures. 17 24 34

Hydra’s campaign against the Allies was heavily disrupted by Han Lin, Steve Rogers, and the Strategic Scientific Reserve. In response, Hydra fortified its research bases, fielded Super Energy Soldiers, revived its energy-arms factories, and accelerated construction of the Valkyrie. 41 44 47
