Background / History

Steve Rogers was born in the United States during the Great Depression. Before his enhancement, he was a short, sickly young man with a long medical record that repeatedly disqualified him from military service. His determination to fight remained unshaken despite being stamped 4F and rejected again and again. 2 11

After confronting a man disrespecting a wartime propaganda film, Steve was attacked in an alley. Han Lin intervened, incapacitated the attacker, and fled with Steve. Steve warned Han Lin about the danger an undocumented Asian man could face from the authorities, then took him home and introduced him to James “Bucky” Barnes. 2 3

Steve continued forging enlistment papers and trying recruitment offices until Dr. Abraham Erskine observed his resolve at the World’s Fair of Tomorrow. When asked whether he wanted to kill Nazis, Steve answered that he did not want to kill anyone or be a bully; Erskine subsequently admitted him into the Strategic Scientific Reserve. 11

During training, Steve’s physical condition left him far behind the other recruits, but he completed every exercise through determination. His intelligence, courage, and refusal to abandon others convinced Erskine that he was the right candidate for the Super Soldier Serum. 12 14

Steve underwent enhancement with an improved serum developed through Erskine and Han Lin’s research. Though the procedure caused extreme pain, he insisted that the Life Ray not be shut down and emerged successfully transformed into a Super Soldier. 15 16

He subsequently fought Hydra in Europe with Han Lin, becoming the public symbol Captain America while serving as a frontline leader.
