Background / History

The Demon Clan established the first Heavenly Court above the Nine Heavens after Dijun offered sacrifices to Heaven and proclaimed its mandate. It was created to formulate Heavenly Regulations, harmonize yin and yang, govern the stars, and rule the heavens of the Primordial Wilderness. The Heavenly Dao acknowledged its founding and bestowed immense Merit upon the Demon Clan’s leadership. 4

Under the Demon Clan, the Heavenly Court’s nine realms were each comparable to a complete world. Their combined spiritual resources and fortune rivaled those of the entire Primordial Wilderness, allowing the Demon Clan to stand alongside the Witch Clan and Immortal Court. 4

The court soon moved against the Immortal Court, deploying an army of heavenly soldiers and generals led by Quasi-Sage marshals. 19 During the Witch–Demon conflict, however, its palaces were devastated and its first incarnation ultimately passed away with Dijun and the Demon Race. 5 120

Following the great calamity, Hongjun Dao Ancestor ordered the creation of a new Heavenly Court to govern the cosmos, regulate the seasons, administer mountains and rivers, and bring blessings to all living beings. Haotian and Yaochi were selected as the new Heavenly Emperor and Heavenly Empress, while Zhu Yin received the supreme position of Nine Heavens Great Emperor. 120

Under Haotian and Yaochi, the rebuilt court gradually recovered its former grandeur, recruited and trained new immortals, and resumed its role as the central celestial authority. 123 During Haotian’s absence, Zhu Yin temporarily wielded the Heavenly Emperor’s authority, initiating a period later called the Nine Heavens Era. 133 145

Appearance

The original Heavenly Court occupied nine boundless heavenly realms layered like a ladder toward the firmament. Its palaces were built of azure jade, glazed crystal, and white jade, amid immortal mountains, spirit springs, lakes, waterfalls, medicinal herbs, and immortal flowers. 4

• Vast rosy clouds, golden light, auspicious clouds, and falling spiritual energy surrounded the Nine Heavens. 4
• Lingxiao Hall served as the site of the Demon Clan’s founding ceremony. 4
• Qiankun Hall hosted major celebrations, including Dijun’s Heavenly Wedding. 25

Celestial Order

The Heavenly Court governs celestial phenomena and the operation of heaven and earth. Its founding mandate included harmonizing yin and yang, governing the stars, and protecting living beings. 4

Divine Offices

The Heavenly Court evaluates and appoints Orthodox Gods rather than relying on cultivation alone. Candidates are judged on cultivation, Dao Heart, merit, and conduct; excessive karmic sin or unruly behavior disqualifies an applicant. 135

Five Directional Heavenly Courts

Zhu Yin and Yaochi established the Five Directional Supreme Emperors to organize the starry sky, stabilize the Five Elements, guard the Heavenly Court, and advance the workings of heaven and earth. The Heavenly Dao recognized the offices and granted Merit to their contributors. 145

Military Forces

The Heavenly Court fields heavenly soldiers, generals, divine officers, and powerful immortals drawn from many races.

• During the campaign against the Immortal Court, True Immortals served as vanguards, Mysterious Immortals as officers, Golden Immortals as deputy generals, Taiyi Golden Immortals as the main assault force, Great Principle Golden Immortals as commanders, and Quasi-Sages as marshals. 19
• Under Haotian, Yunhua Fairy commanded part of the Heavenly Court’s military authority and often led troops against demons and devils. 123

Major Arcs

Establishment and Demon Clan Rule

Dijun founded the Heavenly Court in the Nine Heavens, receiving Heaven’s mandate and establishing a celestial hierarchy led by the Demon Clan’s principal powers. 4

The court’s expansion brought it into conflict with the Immortal Court and later into the great war against the Witch Clan. 19 5

Rebuilding of the Heavenly Court

After the fall of the Demon Race Heavenly Court, Haotian and Yaochi were appointed to establish a new celestial administration. Hongjun Dao Ancestor also bestowed spiritual treasures and the Peach Tree to protect and suppress the court’s fortune. 120

The restored court hosted Peach Banquets, rebuilt its palaces, recruited new immortals, and expanded its authority over clouds, rain, stars, and divine offices. 123 127 135

Nine Heavens Era

While acting as Heavenly Emperor, Zhu Yin strengthened the court’s prestige by suppressing lawbreakers, organizing the starry sky, recruiting the Twelve Yuanchen, and accepting divine descendants displaced from the Human Clan. 133 135 136

The court’s protection of the divine descendants won recognition and support from many races, which viewed it as a refuge for declining peoples and divine lineages. 136

Return of Haotian

Haotian returned to the Heavenly Court after completing his tribulations and learned of Zhu Yin’s achievements during the latter’s sixty-thousand-year tenure. Zhu Yin had already handed over most of his authority and intended to retire from the court’s karmic entanglements. 149 150

Haotian subsequently sought to expand the court’s authority through the Heaven-level Underworld and the Earth Immortal Lineage. 160

Immortal-God Tribulation

The Heavenly Court’s shortage of suitable divine officials contributed to the manifestation of the Investiture List and the coming Immortal-God Tribulation. The list was created to fill the celestial cycle’s 365 Orthodox God positions and countless lesser offices. 162
