Background

Jaba was present with Gol D. Roger and Silvers Rayleigh when Vikengam revealed that Imu, rather than the Five Elders, secretly ruled the World Government. He immediately recognized the danger of becoming a target like Rocks and stressed the need to find a way to counter Imu’s power 19.

As the Roger Pirates’ navigator, Jaba helped amass Log Pose records for every island across all seven Grand Line routes through black-market purchases, old records, and other sources. His accumulated knowledge made the crew capable of choosing routes freely in the first half of the Grand Line 36. He also compiled a comprehensive world sea chart used to confirm important locations during the crew’s search for the Final Island 143.

Appearance

Jaba is a muscular, middle-aged man who usually carries twin battle axes. Before visiting Mary Geoise, he dressed casually in a gaudy beach shirt, ordinary shorts, flip-flops, and cheap sunglasses 64 149.

Jaba is confident, boisterous, and intensely competitive. He takes pride in both his strength and his navigation, readily declaring that he can succeed wherever another capable navigator has done so 36. Despite his carefree behavior, he is considered more level-headed and reliable than Roger when the crew must make a delicate decision; this is why he accompanies Vikengam to Mary Geoise 62.

He is also a practical mentor. After defeating Vikengam in a Haki-restricted spar, Jaba identifies Vikengam’s lack of combat experience and overly rigid fighting style rather than dismissing him for losing 21.

Jaba calls himself a “preacher of love” and dreams of forming romantic relationships with women of every race. His particular desire to marry a Giant Tribe woman drives much of his fascination with Elbaf and ultimately leads him to Lipri 35 48 149.

Search for the Final Island

Jaba learns of Imu’s existence and the threat posed to people carrying forbidden legacies or bloodlines. He supports the Roger Pirates’ resolve to uncover the Void Century and find a means of opposing Imu 19.

He serves as both navigator and combat mentor during the crew’s voyage, defeating Vikengam in a sparring match and advising him to gain practical experience rather than relying solely on raw ability 21.

Mary Geoise Visit

Jaba accompanies Vikengam to Mary Geoise because Roger is considered too reckless for the visit. He experiences Celestial Dragon privilege firsthand when Vikengam clears Sabaody’s commercial district, outfits him in luxury goods worth nearly seven billion Beli, and secures a Marine warship escort despite Jaba’s pirate bounty 62 63 64.

Elbaf Expedition

Jaba guides the crew into Elbaf by identifying the Rainbow Bridge route to the Sun World. While the Roger Pirates search discreetly for Poneglyphs, he identifies the Giant butcher Lipri as his “destined wife” and proposes to her in the street 149 150.

His relationship with Lipri gives the crew a local connection and an opportunity to inquire into Elbaf’s history and Poneglyphs. He also offers the key deduction that Elbaf may hold the remaining Road Poneglyphs 132 152.

Battle for Elbaf

When Harald is controlled by Imu’s power, Jaba joins Roger, Rayleigh, and Shiki in attempting to save both Harald and Elbaf 155. After Harald regains enough awareness to reveal the World Government’s plot, Jaba helps sever and freeze his body so that the Undying Curse cannot continue to endanger Elbaf 160.

After leaving Elbaf, Jaba worries that Lipri will misunderstand his abrupt departure, especially after Sengoku destroys his Den Den Mushi and cuts off their means of contact 163.
