Background

Da Niu was born a commoner and lost both parents to starvation when he was nine. Left without food or family, he survived on charity from villagers who could barely support themselves. He sometimes considered dying to reunite with his parents, but remembered that his mother had starved herself so that he could live. 10

Bai Fan's aid to Da Niu's village changed his life. Bai Fan taught the villagers how to survive, provided food, and later formed the Red Army. Da Niu concluded that Bai Fan had risked his life for people like him, and swore to follow him and help bear his burdens. 10

Bai Fan later identifies Da Niu as the person he values most within the group: someone who understands hardship, loves the team, and can one day “carry the banner.” He gives Da Niu a path to strength despite his commoner background and lack of a conventional martial soul. 23

Da Niu is a tall, powerfully built man whose imposing physique contrasts with his sensitive and earnest disposition. 23

Personality

Da Niu is deeply loyal to Bai Fan and regards serving the Red Army and Republic Empire as the meaning of his life. He is willing to confront overwhelming armies, accept personal blame for dangerous decisions, and sacrifice himself to protect his comrades. 10 19 32

Though outwardly blunt and often harsh in speech, he consistently acts to protect others. During the Heaven Dou assault, he orders the low-level Soul Masters to evacuate civilians rather than remain at the gates, masking concern with insults so they will leave quickly. 19 He also shields a weakened warrior at the cost of being speared through the back. 19

Da Niu carries intense guilt for casualties under his command. Zhu Youcai's death and the losses in Star Luo leave him distraught, but Bai Fan repeatedly reassures him that he did everything he could and must grow stronger for the battles ahead. 21 33

Da Niu pulls Bai Fan out of despair after Bibi Dong's engagement. By sharing his own history and urging Bai Fan to fight for the person he loves, he helps renew Bai Fan's resolve to oppose fate. 10

Builder and Defender of the Republic Empire

After Bai Fan is injured, Da Niu drives the group's weapons-development efforts and insists that technology and strength are necessary for them to support Bai Fan. 13 He also enforces the Republic Empire's principle that commoners and Soul Masters are equal, condemning Huang Gang for abusing civilians. 17

When the Heaven Dou army attacks during Bai Fan's seclusion, Da Niu commands the defense. He evacuates civilians, leads exhausted warriors in a final charge, and is nearly killed before Bai Fan returns. 19 20

Heir to Bai Fan's Ideals

Bai Fan gives Da Niu the Golden and Faith Red Lotuses, explicitly creating a path for ordinary people to gain power. Da Niu later learns that equality does not mean indiscriminate charity, accepting Bai Fan's instruction that the Republic Empire must teach people to sustain themselves. 23 25

Star Luo Campaign Commander

Battle Against Spirit Hall

Da Niu urges action after learning that Bibi Dong is to be executed, but Bai Fan orders him to remain and manage the Republic Empire. 34 He later brings Republic Empire warriors to Spirit Hall to save Bai Fan and begs him to flee rather than sacrifice himself. 36
