Background / History

Hagrid was falsely blamed for a student's death after Tom Riddle framed Aragog for the Chamber of Secrets incident. He was expelled from Hogwarts, while Aragog fled into the Forbidden Forest under Hagrid's protection. Dumbledore later secured Hagrid a position as Hogwarts' Keeper of Keys and Grounds; Hagrid remained grateful for the chance Dumbledore gave him. 228

Although he was forbidden from openly using magic after his expulsion, Hagrid continued carrying out tasks for Dumbledore and retained Dumbledore's complete trust. Katelyle later challenges Hagrid's belief that he must remain weak, urging him to use his strength to protect Dumbledore and those he cares for. Hagrid accepts the offer to study Elemental Magic. 17

Katelyle determines that Hagrid has an Earth affinity and begins teaching him Earth Elemental Magic. Hagrid perseveres through the difficulty of learning as a giant and eventually learns to sense and condense Earth Element energy. 20

Years later, the truth of the Chamber of Secrets is exposed: the real killer was a giant snake controlled by Tom Riddle. Hagrid confronts the creature and Riddle, driven by anger over the injustice he endured. 229 231 232
