Personality

Magellan is cold, authoritative, and completely confident in Impel Down’s ability to contain criminals. He initially treats Roya’s presence as a procedural inconvenience, but honors Sengoku’s order to let him personally verify Ace’s imprisonment. 14

He respects strength and revises his opinion of Roya after witnessing his Conqueror’s Haki and Dark-Dark Fruit suppress Infinite Hell. By Roya’s later visits, Magellan receives him personally and cautiously maintains a favorable relationship. 15 23

Despite that respect, Magellan places his duty as warden above personal familiarity. When ordered to imprison Roya for killing Saint Charlos, he personally applies Seastone restraints, confines Roya in a sealed Level Six chamber, and commits himself to preventing any escape. 49 50 51

Magellan is exceptionally resolute and willing to risk his life to fulfill his duty. Although he admits that he may be unable to defeat Roya, he refuses to abandon his post or permit Roya’s release. His fixation on stopping Roya leads him to remain outside Roya’s cell even while Big Mom’s forces assault Impel Down. 54 57 58

His anger becomes explosive after Roya defeats him, Kaido is extracted from the prison, and Hannibal is badly injured. Nevertheless, he remains fair toward his subordinates, refusing to blame Hannibal for failing against Big Mom and recognizing that the vice warden did his best. 61

Magellan wields the Venom-Venom Fruit, producing lethal purple venom.

Ace’s Transfer to Impel Down

Magellan personally receives Roya’s group when Ace is delivered to Impel Down. Though he initially tells Roya to leave after the handover, he permits him to enter after Roya cites Sengoku’s instruction to confirm Ace’s confinement. 14

During the descent to Infinite Hell, Magellan introduces the prison’s levels and its notorious inmates. When several prisoners continue provoking Roya after his Conqueror’s Haki display, Magellan punishes one with venom dragons; Roya then subdues the level with Dark Hole. 14 15

Custody of Doflamingo and Jack

Magellan is caught off guard when Roya returns without advance notice carrying Donquixote Doflamingo and Jack the Drought. After learning that Roya captured them over their illegal dealings, he escorts both prisoners to Infinite Hell. 23

The arrival of the two captives leaves the other Level Six prisoners too intimidated to speak, reinforcing both Magellan’s awareness of Roya’s strength and the prison’s growing collection of major pirates. 23 24

Kaido’s Imprisonment

Magellan is stunned when Roya arrives with the captured Four Emperor Kaido. He recognizes Kaido’s massive sword wound and learns that Roya inflicted it. 34

He takes Kaido into custody despite Kaido’s threats of escape, later watching as the Level Six prisoners react in disbelief to the Emperor’s imprisonment. Magellan withholds the truth of Roya’s role in Kaido’s defeat from them. 34 35

Roya’s Imprisonment

Magellan initially assumes that the arriving Admiral Roya has delivered another prisoner. He is shocked to learn that Roya himself has been ordered imprisoned for killing a Celestial Dragon. 49

After receiving confirmation from higher authority, Magellan personally shackles Roya with Seastone. Roya cooperates, but questions whether Impel Down could truly hold him if he chose to leave, making Magellan especially vigilant. 49 50

The Little Black Room

Rather than imprisoning Roya alongside the other Level Six criminals, Magellan seals him alone inside the Little Black Room, a forgotten Seastone chamber that once held figures including Roger and Shiki. He places all ordinary prison business in Hannibal’s hands and personally guards Roya around the clock. 51

Magellan openly acknowledges that he does not know whether he could stop Roya from escaping, but insists that he will try regardless. His extraordinary precautions cause the Level Six prisoners to speculate that the new inmate may rival Roger, until Hannibal accidentally reveals that the prisoner is Roya. 51 52 53

Fall of Impel Down and Battle with Roya

When Big Mom and the Beasts Pirates invade Impel Down to rescue Kaido, Magellan remains at Roya’s cell rather than joining the prison’s defense. He considers Roya’s potential escape the greater immediate danger and leaves Hannibal to protect the remaining levels. 55 56 57 58

After Big Mom’s forces extract Kaido and Roya breaks out of the Little Black Room, Magellan intercepts him with Venom Dragon. He endures Roya’s newly acquired lightning ability and repeatedly refuses Roya’s demand to stand aside, even though Roya holds the upper hand. 59 60

Following their initial clash, Magellan incapacitates Blackbeard and his crew with a massive venom flood after Teach mocks his defeat. Upon finding the gravely injured Hannibal and learning that Big Mom took Kaido, Magellan reassures Hannibal before resuming his pursuit of Roya. 61

Magellan then unleashes his awakened Venom Demon: Hell’s Judgment on Level Five, transforming the floor into an expanding crimson poison field. Roya ultimately reveals his own duplicate Venom-Venom Fruit power and defeats Magellan through superior Haki, but deliberately spares his life before leaving Impel Down. 61 62 63

• Roya — Initially a visiting rear admiral delivering Ace; Magellan comes to respect and fear his power after witnessing him suppress Infinite Hell, capture multiple major pirates, and defeat Kaido. He later becomes responsible for Roya’s imprisonment, personally guards him in the Little Black Room, and fights unsuccessfully to prevent his escape.
