Background

Rise of the Celestial Court

Following Hongjun's first sermon at Violet Cloud Palace, Dongwang Gong was appointed Leader of Male Immortals. Purple Palace Isle rapidly attracted Eastern Sea scattered immortals and developed into the Celestial Court, with Dongwang Gong positioned as its ruler. 6

When Celestial Court scouts discovered Penglai, Dongwang Gong recognized it as the foremost of the legendary Three Immortal Islands and sought to bring it under his authority. He ordered Luxuan to register Penglai's cultivators, erect a Celestial Court Dao Stele, and submit records of its inhabitants and advancements. 6

His registration demands included a roster every ten thousand years, reporting newly advanced Great Luo and Taiyi cultivators, and registering the three female immortals living on Penglai. Although he initially declared that the Celestial Court would not forcibly seize an occupied cultivation ground, these requirements sought to place Penglai under its administration. 6

Escalation against Penglai

Luxuan's refusal—and his defeat of Dongwang Gong's envoy—led Dongwang Gong to test Penglai repeatedly. He dispatched three Great Luo cultivators, thirty-six Taiyi cultivators, and formation specialists, then escalated to one hundred thousand soldiers led by eight Great Luos. Each force was defeated. 8 10

With the Celestial Court's prestige deteriorating across the Eastern Sea, Dongwang Gong personally went to Penglai. His first direct confrontation with Luxuan ended in defeat despite his Early Quasi-Saint cultivation, the Dragonhead Staff, Celestial Court fortune, and the Myriad Immortals Formation. He was compelled to compensate Penglai and accept restrictions on Celestial Court activity near the island. 11 14 15

Appearance

Dongwang Gong appears as a middle-aged Daoist whose presence alone distorts the surrounding void. He makes his personal entrance in a purple-gold immortal carriage drawn by nine flood dragons of true-dragon bloodline. 11

Personality

Dongwang Gong is deeply invested in the legitimacy and prestige of his title. He interprets his appointment as authority over independent male immortals, treating Penglai's refusal to register as a challenge to the Celestial Court itself. He suppresses news of early defeats because public humiliation threatens his standing as Leader of Male Immortals. 6 8 10

Though prideful, he is not wholly reckless. After suspecting Luxuan had relied on Penglai's terrain, he sent increasingly stronger forces to verify that theory; after losing personally, he accepted Luxuan's compensation demands rather than prolong a losing battle. 8 15 However, his resentment eventually outweighs this caution: he breaks the earlier settlement, mobilizes the Celestial Court's full strength, and demands the Penglai Origin. 25 26

He is particularly angered by Luxuan using his attacks and formations as lessons for junior disciples. Nevertheless, he remains capable of tactical adaptation, concentrating attacks, drawing additional fortune, and changing formation layouts when straightforward force fails. 12 13 14 32

His confidence deteriorates into fear during the final campaign. Luxuan's breakthrough confirms that Dongwang Gong's earlier defeat was genuinely at the hands of a lower-realm Great Luo, rather than an opponent concealing Quasi-Saint cultivation. Once his complete formation collapses, he prioritizes escape over his army and later invokes Hongjun's appointment in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent his execution. 31 32 33

Dongwang Gong controls Purple Palace Isle's island-protecting Innate formation, which had been maintained for countless years and further improved by Celestial Court Great Luo cultivators. During his final retreat, he activates its restrictions and orders the remaining followers to deploy defensive treasures and occupy formation positions. 33

Dongwang Gong first attempts to impose Celestial Court governance over Penglai through registration, a Dao Stele, and compulsory reporting requirements. Luxuan refuses, and the Celestial Court envoy is defeated and sent back with a warning. 6 7

Repeated Celestial Court Expeditions

Believing Luxuan's strength may depend on Penglai's formation, Dongwang Gong sends a larger investigative force, followed by one hundred thousand soldiers and eight Great Luos. Luxuan defeats the army with three palms, forcing Dongwang Gong to intervene personally. 8 10

Dongwang Gong observes the army's defeat through a water mirror at Purple Palace Isle. He crushes the jade cup in his hand and orders his carriage prepared, deciding to confront Luxuan himself. 10

First Personal Defeat

Dongwang Gong arrives as an Early Quasi-Saint and battles Luxuan with the Dragonhead Staff, Celestial Court fortune, and the rudimentary Myriad Immortals Formation. Luxuan turns the confrontation into a lesson for Yunxiao, dismantles the formation, and repeatedly overwhelms Dongwang Gong in direct combat. 11 14 15

To end the battle, Dongwang Gong agrees to keep Celestial Court forces away from Penglai's surrounding sea region and pay three Large Innate Spiritual Veins, ten Innate Spiritual Roots, three High-grade Innate Spirit Treasures, and additional innate materials. 15 16

Luxuan reciprocally agrees not to deliberately encroach on the Celestial Court's existing territory. Upon returning to Purple Palace Isle, Dongwang Gong orders the treasury opened and the compensation dispatched the following day. 15

The defeat becomes a widely repeated measure of Luxuan's strength. Zhao Gongming initially doubts more extravagant stories about Penglai, but the consistent accounts of Dongwang Gong's defeat and compensation force him to reconsider. Branches of the compensated Large Innate Spiritual Veins are subsequently assigned to the Three Cloud Sisters' cultivation grounds. 20

Final Campaign and Death

Unable to accept Penglai's rising influence, Dongwang Gong rebuilds the Myriad Immortals Formation and mobilizes roughly one million soldiers and dozens of Great Luo immortals. He demands the Penglai Origin and orders Luxuan to leave the Eastern Sea. 25 26

He initially intends to have the army defeat Luxuan's disciples before engaging their master with the complete formation. Sensing Luxuan's changing aura during Zhao Gongming's battle, he brings forward the decisive confrontation and activates the formation before Luxuan completes his breakthrough. 30

Luxuan reaches the Primordial Origin Golden Immortal realm during the war and crushes Dongwang Gong's complete formation. After Yunxiao and the other disciples collapse its remaining nodes, Dongwang Gong abandons his army and flees to Purple Palace Isle. 30 31 32

Luxuan pursues him, destroys Purple Palace Isle's protective formation, breaks the Dragonhead Staff, annihilates Dongwang Gong's body, and crushes his escaping Primordial Spirit and true soul. Dongwang Gong's death disperses the Celestial Court's fortune and ends the Celestial Court as an institution. 33 35

Before his death, Dongwang Gong attempts to use Hongjun's appointment as protection. Luxuan answers that the appointment did not authorize him to seize Penglai. The Celestial Court's violet-gold fortune dragon then splits apart, and Luxuan permits surviving cultivators to leave rather than continuing a general slaughter. 33

Posthumous Legacy

The destruction of Dongwang Gong's Celestial Court creates a temporary struggle over Eastern Sea islands, territories, and spiritual veins. Luxuan stabilizes the region through limited prohibitions against robbery and mass killing rather than recreating Dongwang Gong's compulsory registration system. Penglai becomes the region's de facto authority, while Purple Palace Isle is retained as a future outpost. 35

The Celestial Court's confiscated treasury, spiritual veins, spiritual roots, materials, and palaces are transferred to Penglai and integrated into its foundation. Over several decades, Penglai absorbs more than seventy percent of the ordinary captured resources, helping expand its internal space and initiate its evolution toward an independent world. Bixiao contrasts this enormous acquisition with Dongwang Gong's earlier compensation of only three Large Innate Spiritual Veins. 36

At Hongjun's second sermon, Dongwang Gong's former seat in Violet Cloud Palace remains empty while Luxuan sits nearby. Zhao Gongming reflects on the contrast between his former glory and his absence, and Dongwang Gong's former associates refrain from challenging Luxuan. The empty seat serves as a visible reminder of the fallen Leader of Male Immortals. 39

After Penglai develops into the Three Immortals World and becomes inaccessible through ordinary geographic means, Hongyun jokes that Dongwang Gong, had he survived, would no longer even be able to find its entrance. 69
