Organization and Lineages

Nine Sects of Taoism

The Dao Sect is an umbrella organization rather than a single school with one inheritance. Chen Feng compares its major sects to the Five Great Shinobi Villages; Xiao Meng explains that differences in Taoist thought have caused friction between them 10 19.

Sect / Lineage Documented Features
Wudang Sect Source of Tai Chi Fist and Eight Trigrams Palm. Chen Feng identifies Zhang Sanfeng as its founder and says he is believed to have ascended to immortality centuries earlier 19.
Heaven Sect Xiao Meng’s sect. Her master, Grandmaster Bei Ming, is described as unfathomably powerful; reports of his cultivation surpassing Harmony of Man and Nature are presented as rumors 19.
Dragon Tiger Mountain Headed by Celestial Master Zhang Zhiwei. Its inheritance is connected to the Great Purity Moral Celestial Venerable, while its summoned founder-image is Zhang Daoling 33 61 110.
Supreme Purity Mount Mao Wang Xiaoer’s lineage, associated with the Divine Ghost Seven Kill Order. Chen Feng describes its teaching as accepting students without discrimination 60.
One Qi Dao Alliance Said to have the most disciples among the Nine Sects and to be the strongest active faction when secluded Kunlun is excluded 20.
Jade Purity Kunlun Described as the head of the Nine Sects, reportedly located in a separate small world and absent from public affairs for hundreds of years 61.
  • Supreme Purity Palace on Mount Tiantai is also identified as the source of Huang Xiaoyan’s Qiankun Mysterious Great Gourd 101.
  • The One Qi Dao Alliance is a cultivation faction within the Nine Sects, distinct from the later Dao Alliance joining the sect with outside political powers 20 67 102.

Dao Child

  • The Dao Child is the successor recognized by senior figures across the sects, expected to unite their competing forces and lead the whole Dao Sect 10.
  • Chen Feng holds this position; his standing is treated as comparable to a village Kage’s despite his youth 58.
  • Xiao Meng serves as his protector under her master’s orders 10 13.

Origins and Patrons

  • Chen Feng traces the sect’s heritage to the Three Pure Ones: the Moral Celestial Venerable of Great Purity, the Genshi Celestial Venerable of Jade Purity, and the Lingbao Celestial Venerable of Supreme Purity 60.
  • He describes the Three Pure Ones as Grand Luo Heavenly Immortals 61.
  • Xiao Meng presents the broader tradition as thousands of years old. Its supposedly long seclusion explains why established ninja initially know nothing about it 2 10.

Beliefs and Cultivation

Purpose

  • Harmony of Man and Nature: Cultivators absorb the essence of heaven and earth to transform their own level of existence. Spells and supernatural abilities are treated as products of cultivation rather than its ultimate purpose 23 67.
  • Human Path: Chen Feng argues that ninja and samurai are people first and should fulfill their responsibilities as human beings 57.
  • Following the Tao: Living things should follow the natural laws of the heaven and earth that sustain them 57.
  • Reducing war: The sect seeks to reshape distorted beliefs that encourage struggles over land, resources, and population 57.
  • Transcendence and survival: In the pirate world, Chen Feng describes its aims as personal transcendence and helping as many people as possible survive 139.

Training and Admission

  • Dao Sect cultivators use True Qi, distinguished from ninja chakra 10.
  • Chen Feng initially requires prospective disciples to abandon their ninja identity. His stated objective is to make Taoist cultivation—not merely a powerful new faction—the world’s mainstream system 44.
  • Hinata’s initiation includes converting her chakra into True Qi and studying organs, meridians, and acupoints 51 54.
  • Sect inheritance cannot be taught to outsiders without permission, the rule Chen Feng invokes when refusing Danzo’s demands 31.
  • The Old Celestial Master rejects Sasuke’s request for admission because it is driven by revenge 39.
  • By Chen Feng’s later return, Tai Chi Fist is the standard introductory technique taught to every student; it remains easy to learn but difficult to master 196.

Cultivation Paths

Path Emphasis Strengths and Risks
Great Purity Elevating the true self through internal and external cultivation before relying on techniques 71. Builds a solid foundation with few weaknesses and strong performance within the same realm 71.
Supreme Purity Developing powerful techniques first, then understanding the Tao through their application 71. Produces strong early combat ability, but insufficient mental discipline can lead practitioners to become obsessed with power 71.

Chen Feng also teaches an immortality classification comprising Human, Ghost, Earth, Divine, and Heavenly Immortals, with the Three Pure Ones occupying the Grand Luo Heavenly Immortal realm 61.

Abilities and Skills

Martial Arts and Acupoint Techniques

  • Tai Chi Fist redirects force and supports Hidden Strength counterattacks, demonstrated against Gaara and Rock Lee 16 22.
  • Eight Trigrams Palm is identified as a Wudang inheritance and later used against Sound Four members 19 47.
  • Acupoint techniques immobilize Neji without requiring Chen Feng to visually locate his acupoints, challenging the Hyuga clan’s confidence in its own methods 19.

Feng Hou Qi Men

  • Uses the Nine Palaces, Eight Trigrams, Five Elements, and Yin–Yang principles to manipulate natural forces 40 203.
  • The Old Celestial Master calls it the pinnacle of technique and states that sufficient mastery can produce infinitely many techniques 40.
  • Applications include slowing an opponent’s movements, elemental manipulation, and battlefield restraint 22 40 115.
  • Its preserved inheritance becomes a major contributor to the sect’s growth during Chen Feng’s absence 202.

Suppression, Healing, and Sealing

  • World Losing Color suppresses battlefield activity and opposing abilities; Xiao Meng uses it against Zabuza’s group 7 8.
  • Xiao Meng uses Taoist True Qi to heal Zabuza after his defeat 9.
  • Huang Xiaoyan’s Ten Thousand Talisman Demon Sealing Array contributes to restraining the Ten Tails and Six Paths Obito 114 115.

Divine Invocations and Soul Attacks

  • Wang Xiaoer’s Divine Ghost Seven Kill Order summons Celestial Master power and inflicts soul injuries that Hidan cannot simply heal 80 84.
  • The Old Celestial Master’s Big Dipper Great Divine Curse borrows a trace of Zhang Daoling’s divine might, manifesting a giant divine statue 110.
  • The Purifying Heaven and Earth Divine Curse returns reincarnated Madara’s soul to the Pure Land 110.
  • Chen Feng and Wang Xiaoer briefly disable Obito’s energy and soul together, creating an opening for the Dragon Tiger Divine Seal 115.

History

Emergence in the Land of Waves

Chen Feng begins spreading the sect’s presence through a fortune-telling stall and charitable assistance in the Land of Waves. His system’s main task is to make the Dao Sect flourish, with reputation points unlocking and upgrading its techniques 1 2.

His martial arts attract Kakashi’s attention, while Xiao Meng’s intervention against Zabuza reveals a second powerful representative. Recognizing the strategic value of their divination and suppression techniques, Kakashi invites them to Konoha 2 7 8 10.

Konoha and the First Disciples

Chen Feng’s Chūnin Exam performances bring the sect to Hiruzen’s attention. Hiruzen refuses Danzo’s proposed investigation because provoking the Nine Sects could endanger Konoha; Danzo nevertheless later attempts to seize their inheritance by force 19 20 31.

The Old Celestial Master’s defeat of Itachi and Kisame reinforces the sect’s reputation. Sasuke unsuccessfully seeks admission, while Hinata formally joins Chen Feng’s tutelage. Her decision costs her the right to inherit the Hyuga main family, but Hiashi ultimately permits her departure 39 51 53.

Establishment in Hidden Mist

After the Old Celestial Master frees Yagura from genjutsu, Chen Feng openly requests permission to spread the Tao in the Land of Water. Yagura agrees to cooperation and promises support for temples and preaching. Subsequent negotiations accompany the abolition of the Bloody Mist Policy and Chen Feng’s appointment as Chief Advisor 57 58 59.

Mei Terumi initially resists the proposed Dao Alliance name because it would imply sect leadership over Hidden Mist. After becoming Fifth Mizukage, she nevertheless supports preaching throughout the country and builds the sect’s central temple. Chen Feng establishes an orphanage for homeless people and children bereaved by war 66.

The relationship develops beyond military protection. Sect businesses become common in Hidden Mist, and a laboratory is built for Orochimaru’s research after he accepts Chen Feng’s offer of cooperation in exchange for a soul-tempering method 81 86.

Expansion of the Dao Alliance

Member Circumstances of Entry
Hidden Mist Establishes cooperation with the sect under Yagura and becomes the alliance’s initial village partner 58 59 67.
Hidden Sand Accepts membership as Chen Feng’s condition for intervention against Hidden Stone 86.
Hidden Stone Offers alliance membership in exchange for protection from Hidden Cloud’s invasion 92.
Hidden Cloud Signs an alliance treaty and receives public protection guarantees from the sect and existing members 94.
Konoha Accepts Chen Feng’s invitation rather than risk isolation from the other major villages 95.

The intervention in Hidden Sand makes the sect’s strength known throughout the Shinobi World. Hidden Stone pays 300 million in reparations to secure the release of Ōnoki and Han, while Hidden Sand publicly announces its membership 91.

Chen Feng later proposes mutual assistance, restrictions on attacks between members, and mediation of disputes. At the alliance leadership election, he wins support from three parties and becomes its leader 102 103.

War Against Akatsuki

Akatsuki first investigates the sect through Konan, who continues seeking its secrets after becoming a captive. By the eve of the wider war, Obito regards defeating the Dao Sect as essential: it has caused more than half of Akatsuki’s losses, and Kabuto estimates that its Kage-level fighters outnumber those of the Five Great Villages combined 41 51 106.

Kabuto defects from the sect’s research base to help Akatsuki. Chen Feng knowingly allows his departure, privately viewing the coming trouble as an opportunity to gain reputation 104.

When the invasion begins, Chen Feng leads the sect’s field fighters into the Land of Water while the Old Celestial Master guards the temple. The defenders defeat the White Zetsu and reincarnated fighters; the Celestial Master separately destroys Madara’s Susanoo and returns his soul to the Pure Land 107 110.

The alliance then forms an Allied Forces under Chen Feng. Its cultivators fight alongside village ninja against the Ten Tails and Six Paths Obito, combining talisman arrays, soul techniques, swordsmanship, and divine invocations 111 114 115.

Expansion into the Pirate World

Before departing the Shinobi World, Chen Feng leaves Feng Hou Qi Men behind. In the pirate world, he identifies himself and Haku as Dao Sect members rather than pirates and supplies his companions with cultivation methods suited to their abilities 121 127 133.

Alabasta becomes the first member state of the new Dao Alliance after Chen Feng stops its civil war. This challenges the World Government and prompts a mission to capture his group. Sky Island subsequently becomes the alliance’s second member 140 145 148.

Iceberg agrees to distribute sect brochures through Water 7 and place its logo on Galley-La ships. Later, Chen Feng supports the Revolutionary Army against a World Government expedition on condition that the alliance receives all spoils of war; approximately 20,000 troops arrive under the sect’s flag 152 186 187.

Later Development in the Shinobi World

During Chen Feng’s absence, increasingly difficult chakra extraction and the demanding requirements of Taoist techniques encourage technological development. Orochimaru becomes a central scientific figure, and Hidden Mist develops a visible combination of technology and Taoist arts 196 201 202.

The Old Celestial Master credits the preserved Feng Hou Qi Men inheritance with accelerating the sect’s growth. On Chen Feng’s return, it is restored to him, while visitors seeking the alliance leader are turned away during his seclusion 202 203.
