Background / History
Enel ruled Sky Island as a self-proclaimed god, enforcing his authority through overwhelming lightning powers and Mantra. His dream was to reach Endless Vearth, a land he believed to be his rightful home; to do so, he intended to destroy Sky Island and cast its inhabitants into the Blue Sea. Li Ziming challenged the logic of this plan, arguing that people born in the sky belonged there and that Enel’s dream was fundamentally misguided 33.
During his survival game, Enel offered to teach Li Ziming Mantra if he survived. His appearance and destructive power forced Li to confront his own fear, ultimately contributing to Li’s awakening of Observation Haki 30.
Enel fought Gan Fall, Robin, Zoro, Wyper, and Li Ziming during the conflict over Sky Island. Wyper temporarily neutralized him with Seastone and a Reject Dial, but Enel restarted his stopped heart with electricity and returned to battle 33. He later defeated Wyper and Li Ziming with increasingly powerful lightning attacks, though Luffy’s eventual victory left him too weakened to properly control Ark Maxim 34 35.
Li Ziming used Air Detonation to bring Ark Maxim down, then secretly saved Enel after his fall. Rather than seeking revenge, Li offered him future work and argued that strength alone could not solve every problem. Enel abandoned his godhood and dream of Endless Vearth, accepting a new life as a Waver mechanic 35 36.
Enel remained in contact with Li Ziming and agreed to assist the Straw Hat Pirates when Li warned him about the coming conflict surrounding Ace and Whitebeard. Although Enel was preparing to marry Conis, he retained his confidence and enthusiasm for battle, returning to help the crew and investigate the moon 63.
Enel later traveled to the moon in a small Waver. He confirmed that the Endless Vearth of his former obsession was real, but his experience caused him to regard his old pursuit of godhood as foolish. He returned more self-aware and continued pursuing his new goal of becoming an excellent Waver mechanic 80.
During the Marineford War, Enel confronted Kizaru and eagerly accepted the chance to fight a powerful opponent. Kizaru proved considerably stronger and faster than expected, forcing Enel to rely on the speed of his lightning merely to hold on. The battle also exposed the limits of Enel’s elemental defenses against high-level Armament Haki users 83 85.
Years later, Enel returned during the gathering crisis in Wano. He arrived in a display of lightning and ozone, jokingly resumed his “god” persona, and joined Li Ziming on the journey to Zou. His speed was described as comparable to Kizaru’s, even while carrying Li, and his lightning became part of the energy infrastructure used to create a large force of combat robots 260 261.
Appearance
Following his defeat, Enel’s former appearance was deliberately altered by Li Ziming.
- Formerly had long earlobes and long golden hair 35.
- His earlobes were cut off, and his hair was restyled into short spikes 35.
- Received a lightning-shaped scar over his right eye 35.
- Was left a note suggesting the name “Laxus,” though he is subsequently still called Enel 35 36.
- Continues to wear the four drums associated with his lightning techniques, even after abandoning his identity as a god 63.
Personality
Enel was arrogant, detached, and convinced that fear—not respect—made someone a god. He treated the survival game as entertainment and viewed Sky Island’s residents as obstacles to his personal dream 30 33 34.
His defeat dismantled this self-image. Though initially confused by Conis and Pagaya’s compassion, he eventually accepted that Sky Island no longer needed him as a god. As a mechanic, he becomes more grounded and cooperative, supplying Li Ziming with electric-power prototypes and leading him to a rare spice-brewed liquor 35 36.
Enel’s humility does not eliminate his pride or love of combat. He remains confident enough to challenge dangerous opponents, including Kizaru, and continues to jokingly call himself a god when reunited with Li Ziming. The title has become more of a playful remnant of his former identity than a serious claim to divine authority 63 80 260.
He is also embarrassed by personal matters such as his upcoming marriage to Conis. His reactions suggest that, beneath his former imposing persona, he has become more emotionally self-conscious and socially ordinary 63 80.
Abilities & Skills
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Enel possesses the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, a lightning Logia that grants him extremely fast movement, long-range electrical attacks, and elemental transformation.
- Can reduce enemies and animals to charcoal with lightning strikes 30.
- Uses attacks including Two Million Volts Discharge, Twenty Million Volts Discharge, Thirty Million Volts: Thunder Bird, and El Thor 33 34.
- Can attack multiple targets across the battlefield and exploit conductive weapons, such as Zoro’s swords 33.
- His lightning can be countered through Seastone, Haki, and elemental or tactical countermeasures 33.
- Can restart his own heart by running electricity through his body after cardiac failure 33.
- Possesses extraordinary movement speed; during the later Wano crisis, his speed is described as comparable to Kizaru’s, even while transporting Li Ziming 261.
- Can provide large-scale electrical power for machinery and weapon systems, including Franky’s combat robots 261.
Mantra
Enel’s Mantra is an advanced form of Observation Haki that gives him exceptional awareness.
- Detected Li Ziming’s attention from a distance and became interested in him 29.
- Uses Mantra to observe the survival game and monitor events across Sky Island 30.
- His level of Mantra is described as extraordinarily difficult to match 31.
- His Mantra was powerful enough to cover the entirety of Sky Island, making his awareness vastly greater than Li Ziming’s newly awakened Observation Haki at the time 261.
Waver Engineering
After abandoning his former ambitions, Enel becomes a Waver mechanic.
- Built and experimented with lightning-powered systems while constructing Ark Maxim 36.
- Provides Li Ziming with smaller electric-power prototypes that may be used for the crew’s ship 36.
- Shares Li Ziming’s interest in unusual drinks and introduces him to the spice-brewed liquor later named Golden Dream 36.
- Travels to the moon in a Waver and confirms that the Endless Vearth of his former dream exists 80.
- Continues improving his understanding of electrical power and applies it to large-scale technological projects in cooperation with Li Ziming and Franky 260 261.
Equipment
- Golden staff — used in combat and to channel attacks 34.
- Drums — carried on his back and used to form lightning-based techniques 34.
- Ark Maxim — a gold ship powered by lightning, built to pursue Endless Vearth. It was later shot down by Li Ziming and dismantled for materials 29 35 80.
- Electric-power prototypes — experimental systems later offered to Li Ziming 36.
- Waver — used for his journey to the moon and later for rapid travel 80 261.
- Electrical power systems — used as an energy source for technological projects, including Franky’s combat robots 261.
Relationships
- Li Ziming — Former enemy who openly challenged Enel’s ideology and fought him alongside others. Li later saved Enel, altered his appearance, recruited him as a future ally, and continued relying on his combat and engineering abilities 33 35 36. Their relationship develops into a competitive friendship marked by insults, practical cooperation, and mutual confidence 63 80 260.
- Gan Fall — Enel displaced him as Sky Island’s god. Gan Fall survived the conflict and returned to leadership after Enel’s defeat 33 35.
- Wyper — A major enemy who used Seastone and a Reject Dial to nearly kill him 33 34.
- Conis and Pagaya — Treated Enel’s injuries despite fearing him and despite his past cruelty; their compassion unsettled him 35.
- Conis — Enel’s fiancée. His relationship with her reflects his transition from isolated ruler to a person with ordinary emotional and domestic ties 63 80.
- Robin — Opposed Enel during the battle and helped restrain him after Wyper’s Seastone attack 33.
- The Straw Hat Pirates — Their victory ended Enel’s rule over Sky Island; he later assists their departure with technology and Balloon Octopuses 35 36. He continues to aid the crew during later crises 63 83 261.
- Kizaru — Enel’s opponent during the Marineford War. Kizaru’s superior speed and power forced Enel into a difficult defensive battle and demonstrated the limitations of Enel’s confidence against an experienced Admiral 83 85.
- Ace — Encounters Enel as a fellow powerful Logia user during the preparations for the later war. Ace expresses interest in testing Enel’s strength, while Li Ziming anticipates a possible battle between their fire and lightning abilities 261.
- Franky — Collaborates indirectly with Enel by using his lightning as an energy source for combat robots designed to oppose Pacifistas 261.
- Golden Lion — Acts as a senior ally and warns Enel not to underestimate the Admirals or other hidden powerhouses 80.
