Background / History
Yan first meets Jiang Lan in Spirit City after the child accidentally bumps into Hu Liena. Yan scolds him, then grows jealous when Hu Liena takes an immediate liking to Jiang Lan. Jiang Lan exploits the tension by making faces at Yan and pretending to be frightened of him, prompting Hu Liena to reprimand Yan 117 118. Xie Yue also teases Yan about his behavior 117 119.
Yan attempts to warn Hu Liena that Jiang Lan might be a spy from another academy, but she dismisses the suggestion. Despite his frustration, he accompanies the group to a flatbread stall. He initially refuses Jiang Lan’s orange candy, then reluctantly bites into it when Jiang Lan offers to feed him, admitting that it tastes acceptable 117 118 119.
Yan competes alongside Hu Liena and Xie Yue for Spirit Hall Academy. During a tournament advancement match, the three reassess Jiang Lan after he defeats a teammate with one unenhanced punch; Spirit Hall concedes rather than face him in individual combat 125 128 129.
Earlier in the tournament, Yan takes the field with Hu Liena and Xie Yue against Godwind Academy. Spirit Hall Academy wins after Hu Liena and Xie Yue use their Martial Soul Fusion Skill 125.
In the championship match, Yan challenges Jiang Lan one-on-one. Jiang Lan throws him across the arena, blocks his next flaming attack, and sends him into the protective barrier. Yan accepts an orange candy and combat advice from Jiang Lan before withdrawing, but promises to defeat him someday 132 133.
Yan’s defeat leaves Hu Liena and Xie Yue convinced that they must use their trump card. They subsequently activate their Martial Soul Fusion Skill, Demon Charm, against Jiang Lan 133.
Appearance
Yan has crimson hair, which falls loose over his face after his defeat by Jiang Lan 133.
At his first appearance, he is described as having ordinary facial features, an extremely sturdy build, long fiery-red hair, flame-like markings across his body, and dark-red irises 117.
- Flame Lord possession — Yellow-brown rock patterns spread across his skin, stone armor forms over his shoulders and back, and flames and rock wrap around his arms. His body also grows noticeably taller 132.
Personality
Yan is proud and quick to anger, particularly when Jiang Lan calls him an old man. His affection for Hu Liena makes him openly jealous of the attention she gives Jiang Lan 117 118 132. Even after losing their fight, he retains enough resolve to promise a rematch 133.
Xie Yue describes Yan as habitually loud and boisterous, but especially ineffective when dealing with Hu Liena. Yan recognizes that Jiang Lan is deliberately provoking him, yet struggles to restrain his reactions when Hu Liena takes the child’s side 118.
Despite his temper, Yan can recognize a serious threat: after Jiang Lan knocks out the Swift Shadow Mantis Soul Master, he puts aside his fiery demeanor and studies Jiang Lan intently 128. His impatience remains a weakness in combat, and Jiang Lan advises him not to exhaust his strength at the beginning of a fight 133.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Lord
Yan’s ancient Martial Soul combines fire and earth attributes, giving him both offensive power and a rocky defense 132.
- He attacks with flaming, rock-armored fists and can send a pillar of fire erupting from beneath an opponent 132 133.
- He can launch himself into the air and strike downward with both fists wreathed in concentrated flame 133.
- His attacks fail to overcome Jiang Lan’s physical strength; Jiang Lan blocks his descending strike and pushes him into the arena barrier 133.
- During possession, his crimson Soul Power releases heat intense enough to make the arena’s stone slabs crackle and visibly distort the surrounding air 132.
- His clash with Jiang Lan produces an explosion of flames and scorching waves that sweep across half the arena and leave a blackened mark on the protective barrier 133.
Hu Liena and Xie Yue regard Yan as an exceptionally strong head-on fighter. They assess that only a handful of Soul Masters from the younger generation could reliably withstand his Flame Lord in direct combat, making the ease of Jiang Lan’s victory particularly alarming 133.

Despite his offensive and defensive strength, Jiang Lan defeats him in direct combat 132 133. |
