Background

Fierce Beast Tribulation

Hongjun first appears during the Fierce Beast Tribulation after silently killing a group of Fierce Beasts, including a Taiyi Golden Immortal-level creature, without harming the surrounding landscape. He introduces himself to Qing Xuan while carrying the damaged Creation Jade Disc, whose resonance bears the Three Thousand Great Daos 7.

He identifies Qing Xuan as an Innate Divine Being nurtured by Buzhou Mountain and takes an interest in Qing Xuan’s unusual World Dao. Hongjun explains that he is traveling east to find a way to confront Beast Emperor Shen Ni, since the Creation Jade Disc excels at Dao comprehension rather than direct slaughter 8.

Hongjun and Qing Xuan travel together for three thousand years, clearing Fierce Beasts and verifying one another’s Dao. When the decisive northern battle begins, Hongjun invites Qing Xuan to join him; Qing Xuan declines because his cultivation is insufficient for a Great Luo battlefield, and Hongjun accepts the decision without pressure 8.

Dao Discussions and the Great Luo Path

After the northern campaign, Hongjun visits Qing Xuan at Buzhou Mountain after sensing the divided origin of the Twenty-Four-Grade Creation Green Lotus. He recognizes Qing Yi as the portion that transformed into an Innate Divine Being and affirms that her transformation gave her an independent future rather than harming her Dao 14 15.

Hongjun later resumes Dao discussions with Qing Xuan and Qing Yi for twelve Epoch Cycles. He demonstrates the essential distinction between Taiyi and Great Luo through an unchanging strand of Great Luo Dao intent that persists through a world’s creation and return to Chaos. The three paths—Hongjun’s Three Thousand Great Daos, Qing Xuan’s World Dao, and Qing Yi’s Creation Dao—mutually validate one another without becoming one 16.

When Shen Ni falls and the Fierce Beast Tribulation ends, Hongjun departs to verify and consolidate the gains from their discussion 16 17.

Hongjun recognizes that the Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin clans’ victory has given them not only Heaven-and-Earth Merit but also the living beings’ desire for order. He anticipates that these advantages will allow the three clans to gather the myriad races under their banners 17.

Dao-Devil War

During the Dragon-Han Tribulation, Hongjun warns Qing Xuan and Qing Yi that Ancestor Dragon, Yuanfeng, and Primordial Qilin seek to surpass Great Luo by merging their Dao Fruits with their races’ Fate Aura. He also reveals his plan to confront Luohou at Mount Sumeru with Yang Mei, Qiankun Ancestor, and Yin-Yang Ancestor 49.

Before departing, Hongjun acknowledges that he has not yet settled on his own path beyond the Thirty-Six Heavens of Great Luo. He asks Qing Xuan and Qing Yi to continue protecting the western Earth Veins, a task consistent with the preparations they have already made with Zhen Yuanzi 49.

After Luohou’s Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation is broken, Qiankun Ancestor, Yin-Yang Ancestor, and Yang Mei turn on both Luohou and the badly wounded Hongjun. A second manifestation of Hongjun intervenes with purple lightning, after which his Three Corpses overwhelm the ambushers 53 54.

Hongjun kills Qiankun Ancestor and Yin-Yang Ancestor, severely damages Yang Mei as he escapes into Chaos, and destroys Luohou’s Dao body. Luohou’s remaining True Spirit escapes within the World-Destroying Black Lotus. Hongjun claims the Qiankun Cauldron, Taiji Diagram, and Godslayer Spear after the battle 54.

Heavenly Dao and Zixiao Palace

Following the Heavenly Dao’s birth, Hongjun discovers Blue Star’s observation of the Primordial World. Rather than severing the connection, he compresses the endlessly regenerating world barrier into a finite boundary and leaves a Heavenly Dao Mark within it, giving the outsiders a possible route to enter without directly opening a passage for them 56.

He makes this discovery while meditating on Jade Capital Mountain. The observers had previously been concealed by the Great Dao, not merely hidden by insufficient cultivation. Hongjun keeps their existence secret and uses the Heavenly Dao to conceal the connection from other Primordial World beings 56.

Hongjun later tells Qing Xuan and Qing Yi that he has chosen a path linked to the Heavenly Dao. During another multi-Epoch Dao discussion, he presents an Immortal Dao harmonized with the Primordial World, contrasting it with Qing Xuan’s return of myriad laws to Chaos and Qing Yi’s creation of all things from primordial origin 57.

He gives Qing Xuan and Qing Yi the Qiankun Cauldron and Godslayer Spear in repayment for their protection of the western Earth Veins, asking only that they grant one future request after attaining Primordial Unity if it lies within their power 58. He subsequently establishes Zixiao Palace beyond the heavens and announces lectures on the Immortal Dao for all beings with affinity 58.

First and Second Sermons

Before the first lecture, a strand of purple Dao light from Zixiao Palace suppresses the powers of Taiyi and the Three Pure Ones, ending their battle outside the palace. Haotian and Yaochi announce the beginning of the lecture and prohibit fighting inside 61.

Hongjun declares the seating arrangement permanent after the attendees enter. Qing Xuan and Qing Yi occupy the first two of the six front cushions, followed by the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa. His first sermon teaches cultivation through Great Luo; its teachings affect the Ancestral Witches through their Pangu bloodline rather than conventional primordial-spirit cultivation 62.

During the first sermon, Hongjun reorganizes the original Thirty-Six Heavens of Great Luo into the four stages of early, middle, late, and perfection. Qing Xuan later recognizes that this simplified Immortal Dao framework was designed from the outset to accommodate Corpse Severing 84.

The second sermon explains the Three Corpses Severing Method and its Quasi-Sage limit. Hongjun answers Taiqing’s question about further advancement by stating that Sagehood requires a separate Sage Dao foundation, reserved for the third sermon. He also confirms to Houtu that the method does not apply to the Witch Clan, while identifying bodily laws and Pangu bloodline transformation as a possible independent route for them 84.

At the sermon’s conclusion, Eastern King proposes honoring Hongjun as Dao Ancestor. The assembled divine beings, including Qing Xuan and Qing Yi, rise and salute him, formally recognizing his establishment and transmission of the Immortal Dao 84.

Appointment of the Immortal Chiefs

Eastern King argues that the newly revealed need for Innate Spirit Treasures will intensify conflict among immortals and asks Hongjun to establish authority and rules. Hongjun appoints him Chief of the Male Immortals and bestows the Dragon-Headed Staff as his symbol of office 85.

Hongjun also appoints Queen Mother of the West Chief of the Female Immortals and gives her the Pure Water Alms Bowl. When she expresses reluctance to govern others, he clarifies that her duty is to maintain order, not to control or enslave the female immortals. She accepts on that basis 85.

These appointments do not grant unrestricted command over every immortal. Queen Mother of the West subsequently rejects Eastern King’s proposed joint faction, while Qing Xuan refuses his invitation and implied authority. Eastern King nevertheless uses his appointment to gather followers and develop the Immortal Court 86 94 130.

Third Sermon and Union with the Dao

At the third sermon, Hongjun explains how each cultivator’s Dao Fruit may be brought into accord with the Heavenly Dao. He emphasizes that the final step toward Sagehood still depends on individual understanding. Qing Xuan and Qing Yi study the teachings for insights into their own paths without intending to anchor their Dao Fruits in the Primordial World’s Heavenly Dao 138.

After the sermon, Hongjun reveals seven strands of Primordial Violet Qi condensed by the Heavenly Dao, each capable of serving as a foundation for Sagehood. He accepts the Three Pure Ones and Nuwa as direct disciples, and Jieyin and Zhunti as nominal disciples, giving each a strand. Qing Xuan and Qing Yi receive neither discipleship nor violet qi and remain unconcerned 138.

Eastern King petitions for the final strand by citing his appointment and work for the Immortal Court. Hongjun replies that the qi has its own destined affinity, and it passes the other contenders before entering Hong Yun’s brow 138.

Hongjun then announces his intention to merge with the Heavenly Dao and distributes Dao-protecting treasures among his disciples. Taiqing receives the Taiji Diagram, Yuanshi the Pangu Banner, and Tongtian the Four Swords of Execution with their formation diagram. Nuwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti also receive treasures, and the remaining divine beings proceed to the Treasure Distribution Cliff to seek further opportunities 139.

After the palace closes, Hong Yun’s violet qi becomes the target of a coalition led by Kunpeng and Eastern King. Qing Xuan protects him and defeats the coalition. Following the conflict, Qing Xuan states that the Dao Ancestor has united with the Dao and that six Sages will arise according to destiny; he warns Hong Yun that the seventh opportunity carries responsibilities and consequences beyond personal advancement 142 143.

Regulation of Demonic Intrusion

Following his union with the Dao, Hongjun’s authority continues to constrain Luohou’s Outer-Domain Demon Realm. A Heavenly Demon enters through a flaw in a secluded cultivator’s Dao heart, but a stronger demon attempting to follow is destroyed by Hongjun’s Purple Firmament Divine Thunder. Luohou warns his subordinates against exceeding these limits and attracting Hongjun’s intervention 147.

Appearance

Hongjun initially appears as a plain-robed Daoist seemingly in his twenties, with upright features and an aura so natural that he seems merged with heaven and earth. In a later visit to Purple Star, he is described as an elderly plain-robed Daoist carrying a whisk 7 48.

  • Carries the damaged Creation Jade Disc, which radiates the resonance of the Three Thousand Great Daos 7.
  • His Dao aura can shift surrounding starlight and cause Dao patterns to react even without an overt release of pressure 14 48.
  • His later battle manifestations wield purple lightning and include the appearance of his Three Corpses 53 54.
  • During the third sermon, a vast manifestation of Heavenly Dao laws unfolds behind him, encompassing the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, and all creation 138.

Personality

Hongjun is composed, candid, and respectful toward fellow cultivators. Despite his superior cultivation, he treats Qing Xuan as a fellow Daoist, praises the originality of the World Dao, and openly admits the Creation Jade Disc’s limitations against Shen Ni’s Godslayer Spear 8.

He values distinct paths rather than demanding conformity. During discussions with Qing Xuan and Qing Yi, he recognizes that their Daos cannot simply be absorbed into his own method; later, he does not force the Three Corpses path onto them because their roots and goals differ from those of most Primordial World beings 16 84.

As the Heavenly Dao’s representative, Hongjun is pragmatic but not needlessly restrictive. He makes Blue Star’s approach possible without guaranteeing success, and he teaches the Immortal Dao broadly while openly acknowledging its limits, including its incompatibility with the Witch Clan 56 84.

His understanding of governance distinguishes responsibility from domination. He reassures Queen Mother of the West that maintaining order does not require controlling or enslaving other immortals 85.

Hongjun remains unmoved by political appeals when distributing the final foundation for Sagehood. Rather than reward Eastern King solely for office or service, he states that the Primordial Violet Qi has its own destined affinity 138.

Abilities & Skills

Three Thousand Great Daos

Hongjun cultivates through the Three Thousand Great Daos carried by the Creation Jade Disc, seeking a path that can connect their beginning and end 8.

  • Kills three Taiyi Golden Immortal-level Fierce Beasts with a single finger strike without stopping his journey 8.
  • Uses Dao resonance to perceive Qing Xuan’s Buzhou Mountain origin and World Dao 8.
  • His Dao discussion helped Qing Xuan understand the threshold separating Taiyi from Great Luo 16.
  • Carries the Great Dao’s Fate Aura and has an exceptional ability to sense opportunities and fortunes, exceeding that of other Innate Divine Beings 15.

  • Establishes that Great Luo requires an individual Dao capable of enduring heaven and earth’s transformations 16.
  • Recognizes Qing Xuan and Qing Yi’s simultaneous Great Luo breakthroughs from afar 20.
  • Explains that a perfected Dao Fruit at the Thirty-Six Heavens cannot advance further without breaking that perfection and pursuing transcendence beyond the Primordial World 49.

Three Corpses and Purple Lightning

Hongjun can manifest Three Corpses in battle, greatly multiplying his combat power 54.

  • Uses purple lightning to deflect the Qiankun Cauldron before it can strike the wounded Hongjun 53.
  • Kills Qiankun Ancestor and Yin-Yang Ancestor during the Mount Sumeru conflict 54.

Heavenly Dao Authority

After the Heavenly Dao manifests, Hongjun becomes capable of perceiving and manipulating matters hidden beyond the Primordial World’s former Great Dao concealment 56.

  • Detects the Firmament and Blue Star’s external observation of the Primordial World 56.
  • Compresses the infinite, self-regenerating world barrier into a finite boundary 56.
  • Places a Heavenly Dao Mark in the barrier so it no longer endlessly regenerates against outside entry 56.
  • Conceals the interworld connection from other Primordial World beings by extending Heavenly Dao concealment over it 56.
  • Manifests Heavenly Dao laws during the third sermon, with his Immortal Dao woven into their collective operation and the laws responding to his voice 138.
  • Distributes Heavenly Dao-condensed Primordial Violet Qi as foundations for attaining Sagehood 138.
  • Unites with the Heavenly Dao after announcing his intention to do so 139 143.

Immortal Dao Transmission

Hongjun establishes the Immortal Dao as a cultivation system suited to beings bound to the Heavenly Dao Order 57 84.

  • Opens Zixiao Palace and lectures to Innate Divine Beings with affinity 58.
  • Teaches cultivation through Great Luo in his first sermon and arranges Great Luo cultivation into early, middle, late, and perfection stages 62 84.
  • Explains the Three Corpses Severing Method, which uses Innate Spirit Treasures to house severed good, evil, and attachment obsessions 83 84.
  • Establishes the Quasi-Sage realm as the stage beyond Great Luo reached through Corpse Severing 83.
  • Withholds the foundation of Sagehood until his third sermon 84.
  • Identifies the Witch Clan’s alternative prospects in Pangu bloodline transformation and the strengthening of bodily laws, while leaving the development of that path to the Witches themselves 84.
  • Explains the Saintly Dao through alignment of individual Dao Fruits with the Heavenly Dao, without claiming that instruction alone can replace personal realization of the final step 138.

Zixiao Palace Authority

  • A strand of purple Dao light from the palace suppresses and disperses Taiyi and the Three Pure Ones’ attacks, ending their battle outside its gates 61.
  • Establishes a permanent seating order for the lecture attendees 62.
  • Confers the offices of Chief of the Male Immortals and Chief of the Female Immortals, together with treasures symbolizing their responsibilities 85.

  • Queen Mother of the West — Appointed Chief of the Female Immortals and given the Pure Water Alms Bowl. Hongjun clarifies that her office concerns preserving order rather than coercive rule 85.
