Ch. 61Love in the Middle of a Battle
Plot points
- Werther rejects the surviving pirates’ offers of money and a Devil Fruit, reasoning that he can take their valuables himself, and orders Blood Wheel to continue killing them.
- After the massacre, only a few marines, pirate Charlotte Launi, and Erin remain. Charlotte tries to send Erin away, but Erin refuses to abandon her.
- Werther lets the marines leave with a message for Sengoku about the Shichibukai matter. He then watches the lovers’ farewell with Tuski, who eats an apple while Werther drinks from liquor in Tuski’s pack.
- Werther offers to spare anyone who leaves, but Charlotte chooses to fight. When Werther attacks toward Erin to provoke her, Charlotte blocks him. His sword cuts through her Haki-coated dagger and wounds her badly.
- With few options left, Charlotte removes her shirt, tears it up, and wraps it around her chest before closing her eyes as if preparing to die. The chapter ends there.
Character developments and interactions
- Werther is ruthless and amused by others’ desperation. He spares the marines for a message to Sengoku, but treats Charlotte and Erin’s situation as entertainment and deliberately provokes Charlotte by targeting Erin.
- Charlotte Launi is fiercely protective of Erin. Though wounded and badly outmatched, she refuses to flee and commits herself to fighting Werther.
- Erin remains with Charlotte despite being urged to escape, showing loyalty and willingness to face danger beside her.
- Tuski watches the confrontation with Werther and is annoyed to discover Werther has been using his backpack to carry liquor.
- Charlotte and Erin’s devotion is shown through their attempted farewell, argument, and Erin’s refusal to leave; Werther and Tuski watch as irreverent spectators.
Significant themes
- Ruthlessness and survival: Begging and bribery do not sway Werther; courage and loyalty offer no guarantee of safety.
- Love and sacrifice: Charlotte risks herself to protect Erin, while Erin chooses solidarity over escape.
- Cruelty and power imbalance: Werther controls the encounter and uses the women’s attachment to provoke Charlotte, turning a desperate personal moment into a spectacle.
