Ch. 121The Modification Succeeded (Bonus Update)
Key events
- Tuski completes the pocket-watch storage item using the Giant Frog Fruit. The frog is no longer conscious, but its ability remains: it can shrink objects placed in its mouth and store them in a stomach-like space of just under five square meters. Tuski reinforces the lining against stomach acid.
- Werther tests the item, finds it useful despite requiring him to retrieve things by hand, and stocks it with belongings and wine.
- Tuski stays aboard to study the Devil Fruit’s Lineage Factor, while Anita refuses to return to the insect-infested island. Werther sets out alone to explore farther inland.
- Werther crosses the broken cliff path using Geppo and returns to the Black Dragon’s undisturbed burial site.
- A group of hostile islanders ambushes him with poisoned blowpipe darts. Werther kills one, and the rest transform into human-beast hybrids. He recognizes them as Zoan users, though they seem unlike Kaido’s artificial-fruit soldiers. With their eyes glowing red and their behavior irrationally violent, Werther fights back.
Character developments and interactions
- Tuski’s surgical skill and bold experimentation produce a successful, if disturbing, invention. His note explains the procedure and its risks to Werther.
- Werther is pleased with the pocket watch and confident enough in his abilities to explore alone.
- Anita’s revulsion at the insects—and her increasingly unsettling inner response to the earlier cruelty—leaves her unwilling to go ashore.
- Werther responds to the islanders’ attack with immediate lethal force; they show no fear or restraint and charge him even after he kills one of their number.
Significant themes
- Experimentation and its moral cost: Tuski’s creation depends on mutilating a conscious Devil Fruit creature, which troubles Anita even as she feels an unexpected thrill.
- Power and practicality: The storage item is a useful but limited tool, reflecting the chapter’s emphasis on ingenuity rather than effortless convenience.
- Violence and dehumanization: The islanders’ strange transformations and apparent loss of reason set up a conflict in which both sides quickly resort to killing.
