Background / History

Golden Lion Shiki was a sea overlord and captain of the Flying Pirates whose strength was portrayed as comparable to Roger’s. During the Battle of Edd War, Shiki suppressed Roger until a storm turned the battle; a ship’s wheel struck Shiki’s head, leaving him with severe brain trauma and reducing his strength. After hearing of Roger’s capture, he attacked Marine Headquarters alone and was subdued only after a prolonged joint battle against Garp and Sengoku. 31 33

Imprisoned in Impel Down’s Infinite Level under Seastone shackles, Shiki remained confident that the prison could not contain him. He proposed an escape bargain to Ye Chen: retrieve his swords, Oto and Kogarashi, and Shiki would take him out of Impel Down. He was prepared to sever both legs to escape if the swords could not be recovered. 26 27 29

After Ye Chen delivered the swords, Shiki cut through his shackles and cell door, refused to free the other Infinite Level prisoners, and fought his way upward. He defeated Shiryu of the Rain, overpowered Magellan, and escaped with Ye Chen and Olvia on a floating gate panel. 29 31 33

After the escape, Shiki attempted to recruit Ye Chen into the Flying Pirates. Ye Chen refused, and Shiki responded with killing intent before honoring their agreement and giving Oto and Kogarashi to him. Shiki then visited Whitebeard aboard the Moby Dick, accepted Ye Chen’s departure, and flew away. 34 35

Golden Lion is an elderly, lion-like man whose presence is consistently described as imposing and predatory. Even while shackled in Infinite Level, he projected enough killing intent to terrify guards and prisoners. 25 26

Shiki is supremely arrogant and views Impel Down, its guards, and most other people as beneath him. He acknowledges only those who can demonstrate exceptional power, holding Roger, Whitebeard, Garp, and Sengoku in high regard while treating weaker people as insignificant. 29 33

He is calculating, ruthless, and willing to mutilate himself rather than accept imprisonment. He manipulated Ye Chen’s desperation, demanding that the child kneel to secure Olvia’s rescue despite having the power to free her effortlessly. 27 31 32

Despite this cruelty, Shiki places importance on his word and dislikes owing others. He honored his agreement to take Ye Chen out of Impel Down and later gave him Oto and Kogarashi in repayment for preserving his legs. 29 34
