Background / History

Golden Lion Shiki was a sea overlord and captain of the Flying Pirates whose strength was portrayed as comparable to Roger’s. During the Battle of Edd War, Shiki suppressed Roger until a storm turned the battle; a ship’s wheel struck Shiki’s head, leaving him with severe brain trauma and reducing his strength. After hearing of Roger’s capture, he attacked Marine Headquarters alone and was subdued only after a prolonged joint battle against Garp and Sengoku. 31 33

Imprisoned in Impel Down’s Infinite Level under Seastone shackles, Shiki remained confident that the prison could not contain him. He proposed an escape bargain to Ye Chen: retrieve his swords, Oto and Kogarashi, and Shiki would take him out of Impel Down. He was prepared to sever both legs to escape if the swords could not be recovered. 26 27 29

After Ye Chen delivered the swords, Shiki cut through his shackles and cell door, refused to free the other Infinite Level prisoners, and fought his way upward. He defeated Shiryu of the Rain, overpowered Magellan, and escaped with Ye Chen and Olvia on a floating gate panel. 29 31 33

After the escape, Shiki attempted to recruit Ye Chen into the Flying Pirates. Ye Chen refused, and Shiki responded with killing intent before honoring their agreement and giving Oto and Kogarashi to him. Shiki then visited Whitebeard aboard the Moby Dick, accepted Ye Chen’s departure, and flew away. 34 35

Years later, Shiki learned that Ye Chen had survived a Marine Buster Call and went to Sabaody to find him. His appearance prompted the government to summon the Shichibukai and the Marines to reinforce the island. Shiki waited for Ye Chen while openly disregarding the forces sent against him. 572 582 590

When fighting erupted at Sabaody, Shiki battled the Marines alongside Ye Chen and other pirates, though Ye Chen still refused to commit to joining the Flying Pirates. Shiki ultimately lifted Sabaody into the air and announced that he would send it to Marine Headquarters. Gravely wounded, he rejected Ye Chen’s plea to escape and chose to continue fighting. His injuries finally overwhelmed him, and Ye Chen recovered his body after Sabaody fell into the sea and buried him on a small island. 605 614 615 617

Appearance

Golden Lion is an elderly, lion-like man whose presence is consistently described as imposing and predatory. Even while shackled in Infinite Level, he projected enough killing intent to terrify guards and prisoners. 25 26

Personality

Shiki is supremely arrogant and views Impel Down, its guards, and most other people as beneath him. He acknowledges only those who can demonstrate exceptional power, holding Roger, Whitebeard, Garp, and Sengoku in high regard while treating weaker people as insignificant. 29 33

He is calculating, ruthless, and willing to mutilate himself rather than accept imprisonment. He manipulated Ye Chen’s desperation, demanding that the child kneel to secure Olvia’s rescue despite having the power to free her effortlessly. 27 31 32

Despite this cruelty, Shiki places importance on his word and dislikes owing others. He honored his agreement to take Ye Chen out of Impel Down and later gave him Oto and Kogarashi in repayment for preserving his legs. 29 34

His pride also made him susceptible to Ye Chen’s provocation at Sabaody. Once mortally wounded, however, he consciously refused to flee: he believed he could no longer fulfill his plans and preferred to die fighting. He urged Ye Chen to leave and live without fear or regret. 609 615

Swordsmanship

Shiki’s swordsmanship allows him to cut materials and opponents that other fighters cannot meaningfully challenge.

Impel Down Escape

Shiki serves as Ye Chen’s dangerous route out of Impel Down. His offer forces Ye Chen to gamble on a pirate he knows may kill him once freed, while Shiki uses the child’s desperation to recover his weapons. 26 28

Once armed, Shiki demonstrates the overwhelming power gap between himself and Impel Down’s defenders. His victories over Shiryu and Magellan make the prison’s supposedly inescapable defenses irrelevant. 30 33

Ye Chen’s Humiliation and Departure

Shiki tests Ye Chen by demanding submission in exchange for Olvia’s freedom. Ye Chen kneels but promises eventual revenge, earning Shiki’s interest because he submits physically without surrendering his will. 32

After escaping, Shiki tries to recruit Ye Chen, then releases him after his refusal. Their parting leaves an unresolved mixture of debt, resentment, respect, and a promised future confrontation; the two meet again years later at Sabaody. 34 35 572 605

Return to Sabaody and Final Battle

Shiki’s search for Ye Chen draws a major Marine response to Sabaody. When battle begins, he overwhelms Marine officers and turns terrain, seawater, ships, and weapons against their forces. Ye Chen fights alongside him while deflecting his renewed attempts to recruit him. 582 590 603 605 606

Even after Sengoku and Garp arrive with reinforcements, Shiki continues fighting. He raises Sabaody into the sky and declares that he will send it to Marine Headquarters. Badly injured and unwilling to retreat, he tells Ye Chen to leave. In his final moments, Shiki shields Ye Chen from the Marines. After Shiki falls and the island crashes into the sea, Ye Chen retrieves his body and buries him. 609 614 615 616 617
