Background and History

Great Qing Dynasty

Ye Chen was born into the wealthy Ye family of the Great Qing Dynasty and was a direct descendant of the Yehe Nara family. He trained in martial arts from age three, hired renowned masters through his family’s wealth, and became a martial champion personally appointed by the emperor at eighteen 1 2 40.

He died shortly after marrying seven wives, then awakened in the body of a five- or six-year-old child in an unfamiliar world. His adult memories, pride, and martial knowledge remained intact, but his physical ability had regressed with his body 1 2.

Ohara

Nico Robin rescues Ye Chen after he washes ashore on Ohara. Although his behavior initially frightens and embarrasses her, he sincerely thanks her and soon becomes her closest companion 1 2 9.

Ye Chen discovers that the Martial Arts Codex has fused with him and begins rebuilding his strength. He defends Robin from her abusive guardians, Luo Ji and her uncle, brings her food, and trains obsessively in the woods 5 6 7.

During the destruction of Ohara, he attacks Spandine while attempting to save Nico Olvia. A CP9 agent severely wounds him with Rankyaku, forcing him to feign death; he later steals Spandine’s pistol, takes him hostage, and creates an opening for Olvia and Robin to flee 12 13.

Freezing Hell

Following Ohara’s destruction, Ye Chen is imprisoned with Olvia in Impel Down’s Freezing Hell. He hunts War Wolves for food and clothing, gives most of his supplies to Olvia, and exchanges wolf meat for lessons from dangerous prisoners 18 19 20.

Basan becomes his Haki instructor, while other prisoners teach him aspects of the Six Powers. Ye Chen grows increasingly ruthless, killing guards for their fur robes and concealing the evidence by feeding the bodies to War Wolves 20 21 22.

He enters the wolf-infested forest to retrieve Cold Fragrance Grass and Blood Lotus for Olvia’s illness, surviving multiple attacks and returning badly wounded. The experience further hardens his resolve and combat ability 23 24.

Escape from Impel Down

Ye Chen steals Golden Lion Shiki’s swords, Oto and Kogarashi, to secure Shiki’s help escaping Impel Down. When Shiki refuses to free Olvia without further payment, Ye Chen kneels despite his pride, awakening Conqueror’s Haki in the process 28 31 32.

Shiki honors the agreement, frees Olvia, and later gives Ye Chen both swords. Ye Chen refuses Shiki’s invitation to join the Flying Pirates and vows to repay the humiliation he endured 34.

Sabaody and Mary Geoise

Whitebeard arranges for Marco to escort Ye Chen and Olvia to Sabaody Archipelago. There, Ye Chen kills pirates who threaten Olvia and becomes increasingly disturbed by the slave trade and the World Nobles’ cruelty 35 36 37.

After witnessing Saint Rosward execute an escaping slave, Ye Chen refuses to kneel and attacks the Celestial Dragon, blinding Rosward in one eye. The assault makes him the target of Admiral Zephyr’s island-wide search 40 41 43.

With Rayleigh’s help, Ye Chen infiltrates a slave auction by posing as a captive. He is transported to Mary Geoise alongside Hancock and her sisters, where he prepares an escape attempt from within the Dragon People’s torture chamber 46 47 49.

Appearance

Ye Chen has the body of a six-year-old boy despite retaining the memories and mentality of his former adult life. He is described as handsome and sharp-looking, with an appearance that often causes others to underestimate him 1 44.

  • Long black braid retained from his Great Qing appearance 1
  • Bright black eyes and a youthful face 21 44
  • Carries Oto and Kogarashi across his back because they are too large to wear at his waist 35
  • Fingers hardened by prolonged Eagle Claw and sand-striking practice, with thick calluses and strength comparable to iron hooks 41

Personality

Ye Chen is proud, shameless, and confrontational. His former status as a wealthy young master left him unused to submission; even when facing Golden Lion or a Celestial Dragon, he refuses to surrender mentally 32 34 40.

His experiences in Ohara and Freezing Hell make him pragmatic and violent. He believes that strength determines survival and is willing to kill enemies who threaten him or those under his protection 22 36.

Despite this brutality, he is fiercely loyal. He protects Robin from abuse, risks his life for Olvia, promises Basan he will return for him, and repeatedly endangers himself in response to enslaved people’s suffering 5 19 32 37 46.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts Codex

The Martial Arts Codex is Ye Chen’s former collection of techniques from numerous Chinese martial arts schools. After transmigration, it fuses with his body and gains unfamiliar techniques beyond those he originally compiled 2 5.

  • Preserves martial forms and theoretical knowledge despite his regressed physique 2
  • Includes body-tempering arts, internal arts, long-fist styles, close-quarters combat, movement techniques, and hard-training methods 2
  • Contains unfamiliar entries such as Dragon-Subduing Palm, Distant Acupoint Strike, Rippling Wave Footwork, and the Muscle-Tendon Transformation Scripture 5

Chinese Kung Fu

Ye Chen treats kung fu as his primary path, even after acquiring Haki and the Six Powers. His training emphasizes physical foundations, breath control, endurance, and lethal application rather than performance 7 20 22.

  • Horse Stance — Builds endurance, balance, and a stable physical foundation 6 7
  • Shaolin Long Fist — One of the first forms retained in his mind after the Codex fuses with him 2
  • Xingyiquan — Practiced during Freezing Hell training 21
  • Iron Sand Palm — Strengthens his hands through repeated striking and sand-based conditioning 21 41
  • Eagle Claw Technique — Produces powerful gripping and finger strikes; used to crack bricks, climb surfaces, and reinforce acupoint attacks 7 25 50

Gecko Technique

A wall-climbing technique combining body control, back and elbow strength, and Eagle Claw-trained fingers 25.

  • Scales smooth walls and trees with exceptional speed 7 25
  • Allows him to cling to ceilings and evade pursuers 41
  • Lets him move through areas conventional fighters cannot access 25

Shrinking Bone Technique

A painful Huaxia technique that compresses and rearranges Ye Chen’s bones, reducing his body size and increasing flexibility 42.

  • Requires dislocating and resetting his bones repeatedly 42
  • Allows him to squeeze through narrow gaps and barred windows 44
  • Intended for infiltration and potential prison escapes 42

Haki

Basan introduces Ye Chen to the principles of Haki in Freezing Hell. His early development is slow, but his extreme conditioning and willpower allow him to progress 20 21 24.

  • Observation Haki — Studies the “breath of all things,” or the ability to perceive surrounding aura 20 21
  • Armament Haki — Manifests as a black gleam over his fist and is used in combat against Ain and Sabaody pirates 36 44
  • Conqueror’s Haki — Awakens unconsciously during his confrontation with Golden Lion and later manifests again under pressure 32 34

Six Powers

Ye Chen learns the Six Powers through instruction from imprisoned former Marines and combatants 20 22.

  • Soru — Uses high-speed movement to ambush opponents, evade attacks, and overwhelm pirates and Ain 36 40 44
  • Studies the broader Six Powers system, including Rankyaku and Geppo, though his most consistently demonstrated technique is Soru 20 24

Acupoint Striking

Ye Chen uses anatomical knowledge and powerful fingers to target vulnerable points on the body 50.

  • Can strike with fingers, fists, elbows, knees, or weapons 50
  • Targets the Yintang, temples, mute acupoints, and other critical points 50
  • Uses the technique to silence, incapacitate, cripple, or kill stronger opponents before they can raise an alarm 50

Weapon Proficiency

Ye Chen is proficient with short weapons, firearms, and dual swords.

  • Uses reverse-grip dagger fighting for concealed, close-range stabbing and slashing 23 24
  • Uses muskets to hunt War Wolves and kill Impel Down guards 22 24
  • Dual-wields Oto and Kogarashi, using them to kill two pirates with simultaneous heart strikes 36

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Oto — One of Golden Lion Shiki’s famous swords; gifted to Ye Chen after the Impel Down escape 34
  • Kogarashi — Oto’s paired sword, also given by Shiki; used to blind Saint Rosward 34 41
  • Martial Arts Codex — Fused into Ye Chen’s body after transmigration 2
  • Dagger and wolf bone — Used in Freezing Hell for close-quarters combat and hunting 21 23
  • Musket — Taken from Impel Down guards and used to hunt War Wolves 22 24
  • Modified explosive collar — Rayleigh secretly tampers with the collar placed on Ye Chen before the slave shipment to Mary Geoise 47

Relationships

  • Nico Robin — Rescuer, closest friend, and the person Ye Chen most consistently seeks to protect. He later vows to find her with Olvia 1 9 38 44
  • Nico Olvia — Protected ally and Robin’s mother. Ye Chen shares food and clothing with her in Freezing Hell, risks his life to cure her illness, and kneels before Shiki to secure her release 19 24 32
  • Basan — Freezing Hell mentor who teaches Ye Chen the foundations of Haki. Ye Chen promises to return and rescue him 20 32
  • Jaguar D. Saul — Injured Marine giant whom Ye Chen treats after finding him on Ohara. Saul later attempts to protect Ye Chen and Robin from Aokiji 8 15
  • Golden Lion Shiki — Transactional benefactor and future enemy. Shiki helps Ye Chen escape Impel Down and gives him Oto and Kogarashi, but Ye Chen resents the humiliation demanded for Olvia’s freedom 32 34
  • Whitebeard — Helps the Ohara survivors leave the New World after questioning Ye Chen about Shiki’s escape 35
  • Silvers Rayleigh — Protector and accomplice who saves Ye Chen from Ain, helps him evade the Marines, and infiltrates the slave auction with him 45 46 47
  • Shakky — Strict guardian on Sabaody who repeatedly restrains Ye Chen from provoking the Marines and World Nobles 39 41 43
  • Ain — Marine pursuer and Zephyr’s student. Ye Chen defeats and repeatedly provokes her, but her ability nearly kills him before Rayleigh intervenes 44 45
  • Boa Hancock — Fellow slave captive in Mary Geoise. Ye Chen encourages her to endure, and the two begin coordinating their resistance in the torture chamber 47 49 50
