Background and History

Great Qing Dynasty

Ye Chen was born into the wealthy Ye family of the Great Qing Dynasty and was a direct descendant of the Yehe Nara family. He trained in martial arts from age three, hired renowned masters through his family’s wealth, and became a martial champion personally appointed by the emperor at eighteen 1 2 40.

He died shortly after marrying seven wives, then awakened in the body of a five- or six-year-old child in an unfamiliar world. His adult memories, pride, and martial knowledge remained intact, but his physical ability had regressed with his body 1 2.

Ohara

Nico Robin rescues Ye Chen after he washes ashore on Ohara. Although his behavior initially frightens and embarrasses her, he sincerely thanks her and soon becomes her closest companion 1 2 9.

Ye Chen discovers that the Martial Arts Codex has fused with him and begins rebuilding his strength. He defends Robin from her abusive guardians, Luo Ji and her uncle, brings her food, and trains obsessively in the woods 5 6 7.

During the destruction of Ohara, he attacks Spandine while attempting to save Nico Olvia. A CP9 agent severely wounds him with Rankyaku, forcing him to feign death; he later steals Spandine’s pistol, takes him hostage, and creates an opening for Olvia and Robin to flee 12 13.

Freezing Hell

Following Ohara’s destruction, Ye Chen is imprisoned with Olvia in Impel Down’s Freezing Hell. He hunts War Wolves for food and clothing, gives most of his supplies to Olvia, and exchanges wolf meat for lessons from dangerous prisoners 18 19 20.

Basan becomes his Haki instructor, while other prisoners teach him aspects of the Six Powers. Ye Chen grows increasingly ruthless, killing guards for their fur robes and concealing the evidence by feeding the bodies to War Wolves 20 21 22.

He enters the wolf-infested forest to retrieve Cold Fragrance Grass and Blood Lotus for Olvia’s illness, surviving multiple attacks and returning badly wounded. The experience further hardens his resolve and combat ability 23 24.

Escape from Impel Down

Ye Chen steals Golden Lion Shiki’s swords, Oto and Kogarashi, to secure Shiki’s help escaping Impel Down. When Shiki refuses to free Olvia without further payment, Ye Chen kneels despite his pride, awakening Conqueror’s Haki in the process 28 31 32.

Shiki honors the agreement, frees Olvia, and later gives Ye Chen both swords. Ye Chen refuses Shiki’s invitation to join the Flying Pirates and vows to repay the humiliation he endured 34.

Sabaody and Mary Geoise

Whitebeard arranges for Marco to escort Ye Chen and Olvia to Sabaody Archipelago. There, Ye Chen kills pirates who threaten Olvia and becomes increasingly disturbed by the slave trade and the World Nobles’ cruelty 35 36 37.

After witnessing Saint Rosward execute an escaping slave, Ye Chen refuses to kneel and attacks the Celestial Dragon, blinding Rosward in one eye. The assault makes him the target of Admiral Zephyr’s island-wide search 40 41 43.

With Rayleigh’s help, Ye Chen infiltrates a slave auction by posing as a captive. He is transported to Mary Geoise alongside Hancock and her sisters, where he prepares an escape attempt from within the Dragon People’s torture chamber 46 47 49.

Ye Chen has the body of a six-year-old boy despite retaining the memories and mentality of his former adult life. He is described as handsome and sharp-looking, with an appearance that often causes others to underestimate him 1 44.

Ye Chen is proud, shameless, and confrontational. His former status as a wealthy young master left him unused to submission; even when facing Golden Lion or a Celestial Dragon, he refuses to surrender mentally 32 34 40.

His experiences in Ohara and Freezing Hell make him pragmatic and violent. He believes that strength determines survival and is willing to kill enemies who threaten him or those under his protection 22 36.

Despite this brutality, he is fiercely loyal. He protects Robin from abuse, risks his life for Olvia, promises Basan he will return for him, and repeatedly endangers himself in response to enslaved people’s suffering 5 19 32 37 46.
