Background / History

Rain initially understood Haki as the decisive weakness in his otherwise formidable Logia-based fighting style. He knew that advanced Armament Haki could strike Logia users directly and damage them internally, rendering elemental transformation unreliable against high-level opponents. Despite this knowledge, three years of extreme self-training produced no results. 3

A Marine named Moore explains that Haki cannot be reliably acquired through a manual or routine. Although every human possesses the latent potential for it, awakening depends on spirit, killing intent, and the will to fight rather than formal instruction alone. 5

Rayleigh later identifies Rain’s specific obstacle: Rain’s Life Return-based self-control forces his mental strength inward to regulate his body, sealing his spirit instead of releasing it. Rayleigh advises him to project that will outward, establishing the principle that later enables all three of Rain’s awakenings. 53

Observation Haki

Observation Haki is a sensory ability that perceives external phenomena, including presence, intent, bodily movement, and incoming attacks. It first manifests for Rain during his battle with Akainu. 77 85

• Detects presences and maps terrain, allowing Rain to locate guards, prisoners, and hidden targets through stone and across large areas. 3 227
• Perceives killing intent, muscle contractions, energy flow, and attack trajectories before an attack lands. 77

Armament Haki

Armament Haki is the compression and outward release of spiritual will and life energy. It functions as both armor and an offensive force capable of affecting targets beyond ordinary physical contact. 85

Conqueror’s Haki is the rare “qualification of a king,” an overwhelming spiritual force possessed by only a tiny minority of individuals. It can dominate weaker wills and clash directly with another Conqueror’s Haki user. 112

• Rayleigh’s Conqueror’s Haki renders surrounding slaves unconscious while Rain withstands its pressure without moving. 53
