Background

Kuma was a Revolutionary Army officer and the father of Jewelry Bonney. To secure treatment for Bonney’s illness, he agreed to surrender his body and autonomy to Vegapunk and the World Government, which intended to erase his personality and convert him into a controllable Pacifista. 55 60

Rain confronted Kuma at Sabaody and exposed the flaw in this sacrifice: the Government could still target Bonney and potentially use Kuma’s altered body against her. Shaken by the prospect, Kuma gave Rain a piece of his Vivre Card and began considering escape. 60

Kuma ultimately chose to live for Bonney. Rain and Vegapunk used Kuma’s final operation on Egghead as a cover: Vegapunk secretly removed Kuma’s self-destruct device and Government control protocols while falsely reporting that the consciousness-erasure procedure had succeeded. 67
