Background / History

Odel once entered the New World, where he lost his entire crew and was traumatized by the power of its inhabitants. After fleeing back to Paradise, he became obsessed with a legend of a figure who would bring laughter to the world and become Pirate King. He concluded that forcing people to smile would let him gather “laughing fortune” and become a new Joy Boy. 35

A few months before Rain’s arrival, Odel seized Siswal by first controlling its king. He spread a nationwide “Mental Plague” that stripped citizens of pain, sorrow, and independent will, leaving them tireless and permanently smiling. 34 35

Odel maintained his rule from the royal palace, reducing Siswal’s former king to a submissive servant and exploiting citizens as laborers and obedient guards. He also accumulated wealth, rare minerals, and shipbuilding materials through forced labor. 35 39

His ambition was rooted in fear. Having escaped the New World after losing his crew, he sought security through absolute control over a weaker population while claiming he would become Pirate King. Rain’s accusations that Odel’s ideology was cowardice disguised as a grand dream repeatedly destabilized him. 35 38

Odel was calculating and cruel in battle. When direct mind control failed against Rain, he awakened his Fruit and turned roughly 300,000 civilians into an emotionless human shield, intending to force Rain into either slaughtering innocents or being overwhelmed. 36 37

At the banquet, Odel reveals his philosophy of manufactured happiness and attempts to subdue Rain through the Suggestion-Suggestion Fruit and the palace’s sensory traps. Rain breaks the illusion through self-inflicted magma burns, forcing Odel to abandon subtle control. 35 36

Odel escalates with Elysium Death Realm, mobilizing Siswal’s controlled population as a human wave. Rain counters by creating the Obsidian Colosseum, isolating Odel from the civilians. 36 37

Inside the sealed arena, Odel’s Haki and sound-based attacks fail to overcome Rain’s obsidian armor and heat. Exhausted by the extreme temperature, he is killed by Obsidian Meltdown: Meteor Pulse. 38
