Arc 2The Demon Hunter Awakens

Evan endured dangerous drug trials and attacks while the Demon Hunter Characteristic transformed him. After defeating Pulis’s assistant and completing his transformation, he joined Richard and learned more about the factions and his new profession.

  • Evan joined Yuri’s trial of the B Virus, reversed its harmful effects, and developed the Copper Plague after combining it with the Copper Pill.
  • Tom MacRae confronted Evan over Jimmy Lebon’s death, then offered him part-time work at the MacRae Detective Agency.
  • Evan’s classmate Gilbert transformed into an Incomplete Bloodthirsty Beast, and Evan subdued him and took his potions.
  • Pulis targeted Evan with a Diluted Transformation Potion, but Richard Tyson arrived and revealed himself as Evan’s Eldest Senior Brother.
  • Pulis’s assistant abducted Evan, who used a Blood-Burning Potion and his toxic blood to weaken her before killing her.
  • Evan’s hunt completed the Demon Hunter Characteristic’s digestion, removing his illnesses and awakening new abilities, including a controllable Secondary Brain.
  • Hong Si and Richard helped deal with the assistant’s remains, while Richard gave Evan the Bloodthirsty Species’ Beyonder Characteristic and warned him about Beyonder Contracts.
  • Pulis was seized by an unseen Judge after trying to give his heart to Eldin, and Richard explained the Community Watch Team and the Demon Hunter profession to Evan.
Chapters 26–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 26The Healing Church

Evan’s health improved as he digested the Demon Hunter Characteristic, but his abdominal pain intensified and he relied on Aspirin to study and go out seeking medicine. At Yuri Clinic, he joined a line for free liver medicine from the Healing Church and ran into Jack Lane.

  • Evan checked his Attribute Panel, noticed his syphilis had worsened, and saw that his back’s swelling had begun to fade.
  • Evan took Phenobarbital, slept, and woke at three in the morning with severe abdominal pain from digesting the Demon Hunter Characteristic.
  • Evan studied for four hours, then took more Aspirin when his pain returned and planned to seek work and medicine.
  • Evan ate breakfast at the Lucky Bee restaurant and went to Yuri Clinic, where the Healing Church offered free medicine to people with liver diseases.
  • Evan joined the line for the medicine and recognized Jack Lane, a fellow Sage University freshman he had met during a drug trial.

Ch. 27The Church Came Out Swinging

Evan discovered that the Healing Church’s Copper Pill concealed copper poisoning behind pain relief, and he reversed its side effects to improve his health. He realized the pill had also begun permanently transforming him through a new Beyonder Characteristic called Copperization.

  • Evan met Lane, who described his worsening illness and explained that he had come to the Healing Church for medicine.
  • Lane praised Evan for standing up to Thompson’s group as they waited in line for treatment.
  • A nun gave Evan a Copper Pill and required him to take one before receiving the rest of the week’s supply.
  • Evan’s Panel revealed that the pill reduced pain perception and increased Blood Quality, while its side effect was copper poisoning.
  • Evan reversed the side effects, easing his liver damage and improving his kidney function, bone strength, and physique.
  • Evan noticed Copperization at 0.01% on his status display and recognized it as a Beyonder Characteristic.

Ch. 28A Trial Drug That Could Cure Syphilis

Evan and Lane took Copper Pills from a Church stall, which eased their pain but left Evan suspecting the medicine was part of a sinister experiment. Seeking drug-trial work, Evan found Carey and four others at Doctor Yuri’s clinic, where they agreed to test a new Syphilis treatment.

  • Evan concluded that the Church’s Copper Pills contained Beyonder Characteristics and could slowly turn patients’ bodies to copper, though he considered taking more because they eased his pain.
  • Lane felt dramatically better after taking a pill and told Evan he planned to find light work so he could buy a birthday present for Lisa and new glasses for his mother.
  • Evan parted from Lane and went to Doctor Yuri’s clinic to ask about drug trials.
  • Evan found Carey and three other candidates waiting in Room Two, then learned that Yuri was recruiting people to test a new drug intended to treat Syphilis.
  • Yuri explained that the trial required two days of oral doses, daily examinations, and staying in the clinic in exchange for food, lodging, and one U.S. Dollar per day; all five candidates agreed.

Ch. 29Was That Blood or Medicine?!

Evan took Red King Laboratory’s Three-Stage B Virus and discovered it had fused with the Copper Pill in his body, extending the time needed to reverse its effects. After tasting Evan’s blood, Pierson realized it contained traces of several supernatural factions and poison, and ordered Yuri to observe him for two days before deciding whether to continue the experiment.

  • Evan signed the Red King Laboratory contract, underwent an examination, and swallowed the Three-Stage B Virus.
  • Evan’s panel revealed that the B Virus had fused with the Copper Pill, and he chose to wait and see what the combination would do.
  • Pierson tasted the blood samples and classified Carey for the Second Stage experiment while ordering the prostitute sent to Saint Mary's Sanatorium as a breeding host.
  • Pierson tasted Arkham’s blood, detected traces of the Sanguines, Demon Hunters, and Healing Church, and became poisoned by its supernatural compounds.
  • Pierson found that Arkham had attended Sage University and taken Magic Potions, then ordered Yuri to watch him for two days and dismiss him if the expected changes did not appear.

Ch. 30Beyonder Characteristic: Copper Plague

Pierson’s team confiscated Evan’s medicines while investigating his unusual infections, and Evan discovered that the Red King Laboratory’s B Virus weakened immunity and Self-Awareness. A notification then revealed that his copper-related Beyonder Characteristic had evolved into Copper Plague, leaving him with new abilities and staged transformations to unlock.

  • Pierson ordered Yuri to collect Evan’s medicines and prevent him from taking any on his own for two days.
  • Evan handed over his Copper Pills, Aspirin, and Mercury Pills, while Yuri returned a different medicine bottle with instructions to take three pills three times a day.
  • Evan hid his Night Demon Potion, then learned that reversing the B Virus’s side effects increased his immunity and Self-Awareness.
  • Evan reasoned that the Red King Laboratory used the B Virus to weaken people and make them more susceptible to infection, and he resolved to ask Hill about it.
  • Evan read medical books while waiting, and his Panel announced that Copperization had evolved into Copper Plague, which let him use copper to devour and control viruses and bacteria.

Ch. 31A Lucrative Drug Trial

Evan discovered that the Copper Plague could control viruses and bacteria, then completed two days in the drug trial before Yuri dismissed him. As he left with the medicines, he realized the Copper Plague grew by devouring pathogens and began considering how he might increase its progress.

  • Evan deduced that the Copper Plague was an accidental result of the Healing Church and Red King Laboratory's drugs, and that he could switch its effects on and off.
  • Evan took four doses of B Virus over two days, improving his Physique and mental strength while the Copper Plague reached 0.09%.
  • Yuri told Evan he had failed the second stage of the trial, returned his clothes and medicine, and gave him two dollars; Evan noticed Yuri had been searching for a mutation.
  • Evan heard distressed voices from other trial patients and suspected the B Virus caused something to grow on their bodies.
  • Evan left the clinic and saw his syphilis and other illnesses improving as the Copper Plague progressed.
  • Evan realized the Copper Plague grew by consuming pathogens and considered deliberately catching diseases, then rejected the idea of selling his body to get infected.

Ch. 32The Detective's Investigation

Evan drank a Night Demon Potion and defeated a group of detectives who had ambushed him at his apartment. Their leader, Tom MacRae, revealed that Mr. Lebon had sent them to question Evan about Jimmy Lebon's death, then offered Evan part-time work.

  • Evan sensed several men waiting in the stairwell and drank a Night Demon Potion to improve his nighttime perception.
  • Tom MacRae and three men cornered Evan, but Evan quickly sent the three attackers tumbling down the stairs.
  • Evan brought Tom into his apartment and questioned him, learning that Mr. Lebon had hired the detectives to investigate him.
  • Tom said Mr. Lebon suspected Evan had cursed Jimmy Lebon, and Evan realized the curse had rebounded on its caster.
  • Tom accepted that Jimmy's death appeared unrelated to Evan, introduced himself, and offered Evan part-time work at his detective agency.

Ch. 33The Inheritance of Beyonder Characteristics

Evan considered a detective assistant job, worked another shift at the harbor, and learned about the hidden structure of the Beyonder world in a dream. The dream ended as his predecessor began explaining the three Professions under Gold.

  • Evan accepted McRae's business card and considered becoming a detective assistant for the MacRae Detective Agency.
  • After working at the harbor, Evan told Parker that Carey was testing drugs at the clinic and noted Parker's strange reaction to Carey's beautiful wife.
  • Evan swallowed his last two Mercury Pills, reversed their side effects, and gained a small increase in physique, but his nerve damage did not improve.
  • In a dream, Hill's Master explained that Beyonder knowledge passed through Characteristics and inheritance rather than books, and warned Evan that accepting Monster Characteristics could make humans lose control and become beasts.
  • Hill's Master described the five Beyonder Signifiers and their Professions, and Evan named Gold's three as Financier, Judge, and Factory Owner.

Ch. 34Why Is My Head Getting Pointy?

Evan learned that Demon Hunters belong to a disreputable, loosely guided Beyonder tradition with a low ceiling, then discovered that writing certain Profession combinations made the paper burn to ash. After studying, he noticed his skull had become pointier, and Hill appeared in disguise to tell him he was digesting his Magic Potion quickly.

  • In a dream, the Demon Hunter explained that Demon Hunters, Witches, and Mages were disreputable Professions with more freedom but higher risks and no clear path beyond Master.
  • The Demon Hunter described the Apprentice, Expert, and Master stages before warning Evan he would have to find his own way afterward.
  • Evan woke at six, tested writing "Knight of the Sun Path," and watched the paper transform its wording before burning to ash.
  • Evan reviewed his chemistry lessons, then noticed in the mirror that his skull had become higher and more oval.
  • Hill appeared in the Washroom disguised with golden hair and blue eyes, remarked that Evan was digesting his Magic Potion quickly, and Evan asked whether he could control the change.

Ch. 35Even Beyonders Needed Respectable Jobs

Evan learned from Hill that his Demon Hunter transformation would finish within days and that he could hide its physical traits. He returned to school and demonstrated his chemistry knowledge, determined to build a respectable life alongside his Beyonder abilities.

  • Hill examined Evan, explained that his transformation would finish in five or six days, and warned him to see people regularly so the changes would not draw suspicion.
  • Hill gave Evan her public identity card and left through his bedroom window, while Evan decided to seal his drafty windows.
  • Evan took a Test Copper Pill, which eased his liver damage and slightly improved his kidney function and bone strength.
  • Evan returned to school, where Lebon's parents were absent and Monday's chemistry class focused on Dalton's atomic theory and a water-production calculation.
  • Evan explained Berzelius's work and calculated that 32 grams of oxygen would produce 36 grams of water, earning Professor Mons's approval.

Ch. 36Cooperation and Enemies

Evan learned that Botis Alcott had cursed him and received more medicine from Professor Pulis, while Pulis ordered his assistant to send Eldin to make Evan infatuated with her. The chapter left Evan unaware of Pulis's plan as he continued absorbing the Demon Hunter Characteristic.

  • Professor Mons praised Evan's progress, and classmates noticed that his former skin condition had disappeared.
  • Morales suspected Evan had received treatment for Syphilis through a connection to Lebon and decided to keep his distance.
  • Evan told Pulis about his curse and asked who was responsible, and Pulis named Botis Alcott, founder of the Phoenix Brotherhood.
  • Pulis gave Evan five vials of medicine and instructed him to take one each day after sunset.
  • Pulis told his Female Assistant to send Eldin to make Evan completely infatuated with her.

Ch. 37Mutation and the Bloodthirsty Beast

During PE, Evan noticed Gilbert mutating into a Bloodthirsty Beast after taking the medicine, then used his enhanced strength to stop him from attacking a group of female students. As Gilbert continued to transform, Evan recalled that destroying the creature’s Bloodthirst Sac could temporarily halt its bloodlust.

  • Morales watched Evan during class, troubled by how drastically he had changed.
  • Evan ran the coal-slag track without fatigue and noticed Lane had improved after taking the Copper Pill.
  • Gilbert developed red eyes, a blood scent, and claws before lunging at the female students.
  • Evan intercepted Gilbert and threw him to the ground, but Gilbert kept transforming and struggling.
  • Evan recognized Gilbert as an Incomplete Bloodthirsty Beast and recalled that its Bloodthirst Sac was its weak point.

Ch. 38Evan Was Practical

Evan subdued Gilbert after sensing his blood and realized his Demon Hunter instincts were awakening through encounters with Monsters. As Professor Byron’s involvement raised questions about the university’s drug experiments, Evan kept the bottles he had taken from Gilbert and left after meeting Eldin Yousefka Hurst.

  • Evan pinned Gilbert down and struck the pulsing lump in his neck, leaving him alive but without Combat Strength.
  • Evan concluded that the Demon Hunter Characteristic had sharpened his senses and was awakening combat knowledge when he encountered Monsters.
  • A school security guard recognized Evan, but a student defended him and explained that Gilbert had attacked them.
  • Evan overheard the guards summon Professor Byron and suspected that more than one faction was testing Magic Potions on poor students.
  • Evan kept the three bottles he had taken from Gilbert and met Eldin Yousefka Hurst, who thanked him for protecting Helen.
  • Evan politely excused himself from Eldin and Helen so he could take the drugs and haul sacks at the Harbor.

Ch. 39The One Time I Took Medicine Without Thinking—Never Again!

After leaving Eldin behind, Evan returned home with eight Magic Potion bottles and tried one of Gilbert’s Blood-Burning Potions. Its effects nearly incapacitated him, but he realized it might be designed to counter the Bloodthirsty Species and reversed its harmful effects.

  • Evan ignored Eldin’s offer to talk and left the Sports Ground with Lane and John before anyone discovered Gilbert was missing three bottles of medicine.
  • Evan returned to his apartment and compared the eight bottles he had acquired, finding that Gilbert’s three bottles contained the same potion.
  • Evan drank an Incomplete Blood-Burning Potion, which increased his Physique but severely reduced his healing and Blood Quality and left him weak and dizzy.
  • Evan suspected the potion was developed to counter the Bloodthirsty Species and used the reversal option, which showed a duration of five hours.
  • Evan decided not to haul sacks that night, warmed his leftover meal, and counted the six dollars and forty-one cents he had left.

Ch. 40Let Me Taste Your Blood

Evan discovered that reversing the Blood-Burning Potion’s side effects increased his Basic Sanguine, then realized Pulis was trying to transform him with a Diluted Transformation Potion. After Hill tasted Evan’s blood, it triggered her Black Blood System.

  • After five hours, Evan recovered from the Blood-Burning Potion’s anemia and gained four percent Basic Sanguine by reversing its side effects.
  • Evan drank a Diluted Transformation Potion from Pulis and reversed its effects overnight, gaining Spirit while noticing changes linked to fear of sunlight and lowered self-awareness.
  • Evan told Hill that Pulis seemed to be targeting him, and she identified the potion as a Diluted Transformation Potion.
  • Hill pricked Evan’s finger and tasted his blood, triggering her Black Blood System as black veins spread across her face and her hair turned silver.

Ch. 41Eight-Testicle Warriors of the Demon Hunter Circle

Hill explained how the Demon Hunter Black Blood System worked and arranged for her senior fellow apprentice to protect Evan. At school, Evan's incomplete Demon Hunter Transformation Potion fully reversed its side effects and greatly enhanced his memory, taste, and reproductive ability, leaving him able to absorb lessons with extraordinary speed.

  • Hill told Evan that his blood was toxic enough to act like a Magic Potion and could temporarily paralyze a Low-Level Bloodthirsty Species.
  • Hill said she was too busy to guard Evan herself, but promised her stronger senior fellow apprentice would watch over him from the shadows.
  • Evan reached school on time and noticed his classmates treated him with less hostility after Miss Hurst's intervention.
  • During chemistry class, Evan's Panel reported that the potion's side effects had reversed and his memory, taste, and reproductive ability had increased.
  • Evan realized his targeted improvements were substantial and spent the rest of the day memorizing lessons with unusual efficiency.

Ch. 42An Invitation with Ulterior Motives

Evan accepted Eldin Hurst’s offer to accompany her group to a football game in exchange for three dollars a day, while jealousy stirred among his poor classmates. On his way home, the final thirty minutes of his Demon Hunter Characteristic’s digestion brought on unbearable pain in the strangely silent alley.

  • Evan continued taking diluted Transformation Potions and left his Blood-Burning Potions untouched while he grew stronger and struggled to afford his increased appetite.
  • Eldin invited Evan to accompany her group to the football game and offered him three dollars a day; Evan eagerly accepted after learning he would be paid.
  • Lane, John, and the other poor students resented Evan’s good fortune and planned to volunteer at the Church.
  • Evan noticed that the stray cat was missing and the alley had fallen unnaturally silent before collapsing in agony.
  • Evan’s Copper Pill failed to ease the pain as his Demon Hunter Characteristic neared full digestion.

Ch. 43Pulis Strikes, Senior Brother Richard Steps In

Pulis attacked Evan as the Demon Hunter Characteristic’s digestion put him through a dangerous transformation. Richard Tyson intervened, but Evan’s strange symptoms worsened, leaving Richard alarmed by his blood.

  • Pulis explained the bodily changes Evan would endure as the Demon Hunter Characteristic finished digesting, then unleashed a crimson attack that overwhelmed Evan’s senses.
  • Richard Tyson arrived and accused Pulis of breaking their agreement, identifying himself as Evan’s Eldest Senior Brother.
  • Pulis transformed his arm into a fleshy tentacle and attacked Evan, but Richard froze him with a command and blasted him into a wall.
  • Richard pulled Evan behind him and checked his condition as Evan struggled with his thoughts and developed a Golden Slit Pupil, silver-white hair, a pointed head, and a shifting expression.
  • Richard smelled Evan’s blood, recoiled, and wondered how much Beyonder matter Evan had consumed.

Ch. 44I'll Give You Something Stronger!

Richard fought Pulis while Evan drank a Blood-Burning Potion, but Pulis's assistant captured Evan and carried him away. Evan bit into one of her tendrils and poisoned the wound with potion-tainted saliva, though she claimed the injury was insignificant.

  • Pulis returned in a monstrous bat-winged form and pierced Richard's chest with his tongue.
  • Richard seized Pulis's tongue and battered him, while Evan drank a Blood-Burning Potion and tried to give Richard another bottle.
  • Pulis's assistant seized Evan with flesh tendrils and fled, while Richard pretended to chase her after winking at Evan.
  • Evan recalled that Bloodthirsty Species tendrils depended on blood and bit one open despite the assistant's grip.
  • Evan spat his potion-tainted saliva into the tendril's wound, but the assistant kept running and said the injury meant nothing.

Ch. 45A Forced Kiss to Administer Medicine; The Vampire Is Killed in a Counterattack!

Evan learned that the Mason Family’s Homecoming invitation was tied to feeding an immortal, then poisoned the Female Assistant with Blood-Burning Potion and killed her. He survived the fight and realized Pulis had not known about Professor Byron’s research into the potion.

  • The Female Assistant told Evan that his family descended from a seventeenth-century witch and that the Homecoming invitation meant the Mason Family had to keep an immortal fed.
  • After the Female Assistant collapsed from an unknown poison near the Abandoned Factory, Evan pinned her down and forced Blood-Burning Potion into her mouth with a kiss.
  • The Female Assistant bit Evan and injected Sanguine Tainted Blood, but the potion and Evan’s blood caused her Vampire traits to disappear and weakened her mind.
  • Evan picked up a heavy stone and repeatedly struck the Female Assistant’s head until he killed her.
  • Afterward, Evan mocked Pulis for not knowing that Professor Byron was researching a potion to counter the Bloodthirsty Species.

Ch. 46Surging Attributes! Profession: Demon Hunter!

After defeating the Female Assistant, Evan fully digested his Beyonder Characteristic and transformed into a Demon Hunter, gaining immense strength and a strange brain-creature companion. He inspected his new abilities and celebrated his place in the Demon Hunter Circle.

  • Evan's body convulsed as his successful hunt rapidly digested the Beyonder Characteristic and transformed his appearance and physique.
  • A bone creature containing his damaged brain tissue emerged, and Evan discovered he could control it and hide it inside his body.
  • Evan checked his Attribute Panel and found his Physique and Spirit had risen while his illnesses and nerve damage had disappeared.
  • Evan inspected his new Blood Toxicity and Solar Affinity specialties and learned that Blood Toxicity was his fourth Demon Hunter Mark.
  • Evan shouted that the Demon Hunter Circle had gained a new young blood.

Ch. 47The Witcher’s Legacy and Abilities

Evan learned about his Demon Hunter lineage and its abilities after completing his transformation, then met Hong Si, a postman sent by his Eldest Senior Brother. Hong Si destroyed the recovering Female Assistant with a sound-based weapon, leaving Evan to suspect he followed the Poet of the Holy Grail Pathway.

  • Evan learned that his lineage had three abilities: Demon Hunter Sight, Secondary Brain, and Sage Control, each shaped by its predecessors and the Magic Potion’s Side Effects.
  • Evan heard a bicycle bell and spotted a postman whose bell gave off strange blue waves; the man found him hiding behind an oak tree.
  • Hong Si said Evan’s Eldest Senior Brother had sent him to help, and Evan came out from hiding after Hong Si teased him about the Vampire that had frightened him.
  • Hong Si examined the recovering Female Assistant and asked how Evan had injured her so severely and slowed her healing.
  • Hong Si drove a silver-white Tuning Fork into the Female Assistant’s chest and shattered her body with sound waves, prompting Evan to suspect Hong Si was a Poet of the Holy Grail Pathway.

Ch. 48Undying Nature and Solar Holy Water

Evan and Richard learned that ordinary attacks could not kill the Female Assistant because the Bloodthirsty Species possessed Undying Nature, but Richard used solar holy water to burn away her remains. Richard also warned Evan that Pulis would soon be destroyed for breaking his contracts with the Capitalists.

  • Hong Si explained that the Female Assistant could regenerate from physical destruction and that sunlight would eventually kill her.
  • Richard arrived, recovered from a lingering potion side effect, and learned Evan had defeated the Female Assistant with medicine.
  • Hong Si left after Richard thanked him for helping, and Richard told Evan that Pulis had escaped but would soon be sentenced by the Judges for violating his contracts.
  • Richard warned Evan never to sign a Beyonder Contract with the Capitalists, especially a Characteristic Loan.
  • Richard gave Evan a vial of solar holy water, and Evan used three drops to ignite the Female Assistant's remains and blood with golden flames.

Ch. 49The Terrifying Capitalist

Evan learned that Solar Holy Water could destroy the Bloodthirsty Species and received the creature’s Beyonder Characteristic as spoils. Meanwhile, Pulis’s plan failed and he was seized by an unseen Judge, leaving Eldin to carry on his mission and pursue Arkham as an ally against the capitalists.

  • Richard used Solar Holy Water to destroy the Female Assistant, then explained Beyonder combat and gave Evan the Bloodthirsty Species’ Beyonder Characteristic.
  • Richard invited Evan to stay at his home, and Evan agreed to deal with the pulsing Characteristic later.
  • Pulis emerged from Eldin’s shadow, confessed that the Demon Hunters had ruined his plan, and warned that Sapp would come for him after he broke their contract.
  • Pulis tore out his heart and tried to give it to Eldin, but an unseen Judge seized him and swallowed him into the shadow.
  • Eldin resolved to fulfill Pulis’s wish, save the Queen, and win Arkham over as an ally against the capitalists.

Ch. 50Our Identities Are Miskatonik Investigators?

Evan learned that he and Richard were unaffiliated Beyonders working with a community watch group, though their branch called them Miskatonik Investigators through its alliance with Miskatonic University. After Richard explained the limitations of Demon Hunters and the costs of other professions, they reached Evan’s apartment, where they found his Canvas Satchel.

  • Evan asked Richard whether they worked for the government, and Richard explained that he belonged to the Community Watch Team, which paid members for catching criminals.
  • Richard warned Evan that government Beyonders served the ruling class and capital, then said their branch’s alliance with Miskatonic University gave them standing as Miskatonik Investigators.
  • Evan asked about the female assistant’s abilities, and Richard explained that her healing came from her Bloodthirsty Species profession while Demon Hunters’ innate ability was poison resistance.
  • Evan regretted choosing the Demon Hunter profession, but Richard told him professions could not be changed and described the Bloodthirsty Species’ weaknesses.
  • Evan and Richard went to Evan’s apartment, where Richard noticed Evan’s Canvas Satchel on the table and Evan wondered whether Pulis had left it there.
