Yapping at Full Volume
Half an hour later, the Night Goddess docked at the Orbital Defense Center.
Lin En strode in. "Gabriel, I brought back a few tough guys from Isman Planet who can kill Greenskins with wooden spears. I immediately thought they would be perfect for our Bolomite Mortals Guard Army..."
He had just finished handing over with the survivors on Isman Planet and smelled of roasted mushrooms.
Behind him followed three Mortals dressed in tattered clothes, two men and one woman, all with strong builds, dark skin, sharp eyes, and a brisk pace.
Gabriel went to meet him.
The Flesh Tearers Chapter's burly figure almost blocked the entire corridor. He glanced down at the three Mortals behind Lin En, thought they looked alright, and then gestured to the Flesh Tearers warriors behind him.
The Flesh Tearers warrior stepped forward, took the three Mortals soldiers, and led them down to fill out forms.
Gabriel stepped aside, giving up his view through the Porthole.
On the orbit, twelve Tyranids Mothership stood in formation, their purple-green armor strikingly beautiful. "My lord, we can talk about that later. The most important issue right now is these... these Purple Carapace Chapter, they've changed color, are they alright?"
Iron Hammer was even more blunt. He straightened up from behind the Control Console, poked his head out, and asked Lin En, "Kid, did you poison them? They're all purple and green, like they've been poisoned."
"Get lost, I fed you to them." Lin En rolled his eyes, casually shooed the Iron Hammer away, pulled up a chair, sat down, and took a swig from the water glass on the table. "It's nothing, I ate Greenskins."
Iron Hammer stumbled a couple of steps after being chased. He had originally intended to fight Lin En, but something else caught his attention. "Eating Greenskins?!"
"Otherwise what? Insects that eat Greenskins creatures will turn their shells green. It's been confirmed that it doesn't affect their nature, and they don't photosynthesize; it's just pigment deposition, the same principle as flamingos turning pink after eating shrimp."
Iron Hammer circled the Porthole, his expression shifting from shock to excitement, and then to an almost fanatical thirst for knowledge.
"You mean the bugs turn green after eating Greenskins? The pigment in the Greenskins can affect the Tyranids's carapace? What's the principle behind that? And if we feed them something else, will they turn into other colors? Can we feed them a rainbow-colored Chapter?"
"Stop, stop, stop." Lin En raised her hand to interrupt him. "If you don't know, go figure it out yourself."
Iron Hammer slammed his hand on the Control Console table. "I think this color is really trendy! I'm going to put these on the walls of the Industrial Zone!"
Lin En turned to look at him. "... Let the bugs crawl on the wall?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? Can't we just get some wall paint in this color?"
"What are you doing with wall paint? Always so unserious!" Lin En stood up and shooed him away. "So many orders left to finish in the Industrial Zone, and you're here studying colors on the walls? And in such a serious place as Industrial Zone, do you think it's appropriate to paint such a purple-green color? Get out, get out and get to work!"
"Think about it! Using color schemes on the walls is definitely something to consider!"
"Not considering it!!!"
Lin En chased away the Iron Hammer, did a quick calculation of the costs of driving the Tyranids into battle, and decided to continue feeding the Greenskins.
The main problem is that we can't afford to feed them anything else.
Each Mothership consumes approximately fifty tons of organic matter per day on a basic basis, and this consumption doubles during combat, with the exact amount depending on the situation.
Although Corpse Starch chemical byproduct of Warhammer, is cheap, twelve Mothership require 600 tons of fuel per day just for standby. In combat, that doubles to 1,200 tons, and in high-intensity, continuous combat, it would double again, four, five, six times...
You don't know the cost of firewood, rice, oil, and salt until you're in charge of the household.
Even the landlords didn't have any surplus grain!
The Tyranids's food source is mainly organic matter, with a small amount of inorganic matter also acceptable; any biomass can be converted into energy.
Greenskins are the second highest density biomass source in Warhammer, boasting high density per unit volume, rapid reproduction, wide distribution, and low acquisition cost. They combine high reproduction, high distribution, and zero cost. While their nutritional value is somewhat lacking, can't we just eat more of them?
Greenskins, the best fodder in Warhammer.
Actually, raising Tyranids in battlegrounds is also an option.
Even their own kind are easily digested; the Tyranids naturally devour each other's fleets to evolve, and other Tyranids are even more nutritious than the Greenskins.
However, the Tyranids's destructive power over planets is too great. If a planet is infested with Zerg, it will most likely end up as a wasteland. To prevent the Tyranids from developing, the priority should be to eliminate them. This option is crossed out.
The Greenskins had previously proliferated throughout the galaxy, and the Imperium couldn't keep up with their numbers; there were too many to deal with them all in a short time.
Send the Purple Carapace Chapter the Orcs. The Insects will help them kill the Greenskins. Once the Greenskins are gone, the Insects will be full, and the Imperium will take over the planet. It's killing three birds with one stone.
They will likely continue to primarily use Greenskins as feed.
Delicious! My loyal Purple Carapace Chapter! Greenskins galore!
Lin En turned to Phoros, who had followed him in.
"How is the Mothership? Are there any abnormalities?"
Having just returned from settling the fleet, Phoros shook his head, opened the Holo-screen, and pulled up a row of data. "Nothing, it's quite stable, no aggressive psionic fluctuations, all twelve Mothership are on standby, it just looks like they've changed color."
Lin En nodded. "No problem."
It doesn't matter; if others are willing, they can call it Greenskins worm from now on.
Colors are something you get used to; they're just an appearance and don't really matter.
"Let them stop on that small, Desolate Planet again, but not too close, lest the people at the port become afraid."
Phoros nodded. "That's already done."
"Okay, I trust you to handle things."
Lin En led Phoros and the others down the elevator to the planet's surface and walked along the streets of Bolomite.
The air in Bolomite isn't exactly fresh; it has the distinctive smell of coke and metal typical of industrial planets.
It is, after all, an industrial planet with very low vegetation coverage, requiring artificial oxygen production, and also suffers from some industrial pollution.
But it's already better than most other planets in the Imperium; at least Lin En doesn't need to wear a gas mask.
Lin En took a sip and thought it was alright.
He doesn't need to wear it; even the baby in Warhammer 40,000 doesn't need to.
That's great; this is a very good environment in Warhammer.
White smoke billowed from the chimneys of the Industrial Zone in the distance, robotic arms swung back and forth across the ruins, and workers pushed carts to transport building materials.
Several new factory buildings have sprung up in the Industrial Zone, with gray concrete walls and square windows, exactly like the standard colonial buildings of the Imperium.
Simple, practical, ugly.
Lin En looked at the dusty walls, and Iron Hammer's request suddenly flashed through his mind again.
Purple... Green...
He shook his head.
No, no, painting such a serious place like Industrial Zone green and purple would look terrible! It would resemble street graffiti.
The lack of decorum is secondary; the main issue is that the colors are from insects eating the Greenskins.
The Greenskins bug's color scheme is disloyal.
The colors purple and green in Warhammer 40,000 immediately evoke a sense of pollution and depravity.
Later, when the Inquisition or Imperium officials were in a good mood, they sent people to inspect the factory. Seeing a cluster of purple-green buildings, they thought that Bolomite had been Chaos Corruption.
Lin En shook his head as he walked, which made Phoros glance at him a couple of times.
"Sir?" Phoros asked.
"It's nothing," Lin En waved his hand. "Your Lord Iron Hammer just caused me some mental distress."
"... Lord Iron Hammer? What happened to him?"
"He wants to paint the walls of the Industrial Zone the color of insects."
Phoros was silent for two seconds.
"... ah?"
"That one, neither purple nor green." Lin En gestured towards the sky.
"Oh... well... indeed." Phoros carefully chose his words, "That color... isn't quite right."
Lin En waved his hand. "That's really inappropriate. Don't worry about it, I'll kick him out next time he comes."
